  • On October 14, 1972, a Uruguayan rugby team is flying to Santiago Chile for a tournament. The plane encounters turbulence, strays off course, and crashes deep in the Andes. Thirty-two of the forty-five passengers survive the crash, but they have little food or water, and inadequate clothing. At night temperatures drop as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.

    Trapped - Season 1 Episode 1 "Alive in the Andes": It is one of the most remarkable survival stories of the 20th century. A plane crashes 4 000 meters up in the Andes. After 10 days rescuers give up the search. The abandoned survivors have no water or food. Facing starvation, they break the most sacred of human taboos. They are trapped for weeks in one of the most forbidding environments on earth. After 61 days, two of the passengers embark on an epic trek out of the mountains. They endure the worst kind physical and psychological pain, to save themselves and their fellow survivors. Their story is a testament to the strength of human will.
    Action, adventure, spectacular rescues, daring missions, heroes, the application of science and thrilling stories - Trapped has it all. The episodes bring to life some of the great rescues of our time. From an incredible tale of survival in the Andes, to a daring cave rescue in France, Trapped takes the genre to a new level, asking not just “how did it happen?” but also “how did they get out of that?”
    Trapped takes these extraordinary escapes and reveals the fascinating details of each victim’s rescue. We focus on examples of creative problem solving, the ingenious application of basic scientific principles, hi-tech engineering and, of course, bravery, sacrifice and heroism of the rescuers.
    Every episode tells the dramatic story of someone who is trapped, and the epic rescue that then unfolds. What sets the series apart, is how each story is told from two different viewpoints - that of the hapless victims struggling to survive and that of the heroes battling to save them.

    This is Nando's story in the Andes, not the whole story of that group of brave young people who had to suffer the unimaginable in one of the most hostile environments. All of the survivors and many of those who couldn't make it out of the mountains had a crucial role in their fight for survival and returning to their families. All of them are heroes.

    • @diannebdee
      @diannebdee Před 3 měsíci +2

      It may be Nando's story, but two made that trek from the crash site. Roberto deserves a lot of praise for his care of the survivors in being the medical student, and for taking the very same steps Nando did. They both are the heroes of this story. What they did is nothing short of astounding.

    • @Adifgreat
      @Adifgreat Před 3 měsíci +1

      @diannebdee Gustavo Zerbino was also a medical student who assisted the wounded. Diego Storm, the other medical student, saved Nando's life. If it wasn't for Roy Harley, almost all of them would've died in the avalanche. Álvaro Mangino 'made' water despite having a broken tibia and fibula. Antonio Vizintín climbed the highest mountain (almost 5,000 metres) carrying around 40 kilos of 'food' and water. With two broken legs, Arturo Nogueira became the cartographer... and so on.
      What the THREE final expeditionaries did was the final link in a chain of heroic actions. And they were not the only hikers, there were others who also risked their lives by making other expeditions.
      They all took care of each other, supported each other. The survivors say "we all saved each other's lives".

      They work brilliantly ass a team. Few like Roberto were student doctors and help heal injured even though some died some are alive because of him too. They knew that they had to drink water not the snow because that would send them into hypothermia fast. Making things to liquify the ice on sunny days. And nando was also rescued during avalanche from fellow team makes he would have died at that time if they were not able to pull him out. Also using humor as a coping mechanism to try to mentally keep positive. Because people can easily fall in despair and that also can shut your body down.

    Unfortunately, this event is mostly known in the world because of the film 'Alive', a completely distorted version of the real story. And even worse, most of the videos in English (not this one) on this incident are based on that movie. The survivors find it superficial and unable to convey what they really went through. They say they've never seen themselves reflected in the characters.
    In 'Alive', a lot of the facts were changed (not minor details) and others were made up just to give Ethan Hawke's character the role of the 'superhero', whereas the other characters are practically passive spectators who depend entirely on Nando's initiative.
    In reality, what took those young men out of the mountains was the extraordinary teamwork, the resourcefulness and the heroic actions of the whole group. The main leaders and strategists were the Strauch cousins, but as the survivors say, each one of them was a leader depending on the moment and the skills needed during the 72 days they were trapped in the Andes.

      They made a cross because it was written to do it like that in a rescue guide they found in the plane. Maybe the SOS words is something more modern than 1972 but I'm guessing because I don't really know why the air force plane guide said that.

    • @Adifgreat

      There are a lot of major omissions and unrealistically portrayed facts in that film. That's why the survivors say that's not the real story.

    • @chirola9923
      @chirola9923 Před 4 měsíci

      @@AdifgreatAlso they say that because they're promoting a new film.
      You should check what they said about "Alive" at the time.
      Alive is based on Piers Paul Read's 1974 book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, which is a faithful account of the incident

    • @Adifgreat
      @Adifgreat Před 4 měsíci

      @chirola9923 No, they've said so throughout the last 30 years for the Spanish speaking media. The interviews, from the oldest to the most recent, are on YT. And the film 'Alive' is not true to Read's book.
      The survivors have also said the book 'Alive' is a quite accurate but very cold account of facts, that's why they asked their friend Pablo Vierci to write a book the way they would've liked 'Alive' to be written, Society of the Snow, which focuses on their feelings. The new film is based on this book and extensive interviews with the survivors and the victims' families.
