- Extensive walking tour of the Lisbon Aqueduct, in Portugal, also known as Aguas Livres (Free Waters) Aqueduct, with detailed historical information and context! Located in the Campolide district, in Lisbon, the Aguas Livres Aqueduct is one of the most remarkable examples of 18th-century Portuguese engineering. This was also where Diogo Alves, Portugal's most prolific serial killer, committed most of his crimes, in the 19th century. After his hanging, Diogo Alves' head was severed and preserved in formaldehyde!

So proud you faced your fear (vertigo) and filmed this video! Visiting with friends in late September. This year!
It wasn't as bad as I was fearing! 😅 It was worse at the start of the video (2:18). At the top of the aqueduct I was very apprehensive initially, but always having a solid and tall wall on my left made everything much more bearable, it gave a great reference point to my peripheral vision. Not having peripheral reference points is what really triggers my vertigo, I tend to lose my balance to the left. 😅
At 17:34 I notice the Infinity Tower has topped off, soon they will be working on my 26th floor penthouse. I can't wait. Thanxs for the remarkable history lesson. Now that I have seen Diogo Alves's head, I think I am going to skip lunch.
Can I visit your penthouse when it's finished? 😁 I actually visited Diogo Alves right before lunch, I still ate like a champion! haha 😅

Olá Jen! 😃 We have a lot of aqueducts in Portugal, because fresh water supply was a frequent problem throughout the history of the country.
Don't worry, the head can't hurt you. 😅😅 Can't say the same about the doctor who takes care of its maintenance. He nonchalantly told me that he's convinced he will have lung cancer in the future, due to the formaldehyde he has inhaled (and the cigarettes he smokes 😐).
Formaldehyde is *extremely* toxic, it completely destroys all life, including microorganisms, etc. Did you know that the dairy industry up until the early 20th century used to add formaldehyde to milk? 😶

Romanos?! Foi mandado contruir durante o reinado de D. João V (Reinado 1706-1750) e inaugurado em 1748. Ainda Brasil era colónia. Inicio da construção no século XVIII e terminou no século XIX.

Como tem sempre uma parede alta do lado esquerdo, as minhas vertigens não ficam muito ativas. Foi pior no inicio do vídeo, por volta dos 2:18, a falta de referências para a minha visão periférica estava-me mesmo a deixar-me nervoso e com falta de equilibrio 😅

Olá Linda! 🥝 Yes, something unusual this time 😁 Also, something I've always wanted to do, but thought I couldn't do it due to my vertigo. Now, with the channel, I finally had the motivation I needed.
Temperatures are very enjoyable now and looks like next week will be the same, so all good! I'm still quite busy and may have to do some tough choices soon, such as lowering the number of videos I upload per month. The alternative would be to lower the quality of the videos (cut on the historical research, etc), but I'm not willing to do that, I'm too much of a perfectionist for that. 😅
There should be some very interesting (and requested) videos in August, if all goes well. 😊

Fantástica visita a un acueducto! y la verdad que entiendo lo del vértigo porque yo tengo ese problema y es muy feo porue uno se pierde de ver cosas. Me pasó en el Cristo Redentor de Rio,no pude hacer el último tramo. Así que lo entiendo perfectamente y que historia tremenda la de ese asesino loco.Hermoso el paisaje que se ve desde esa altura, realmente una obra imponente, yo lo pasé por debajo solamente. Gracias como siempre, por hacerme recordar la hermosura que es Portugal.
Hola Ana! 😊 Sí, el vértigo puede ser un gran problema. A veces pierdo el equilibrio hacia la izquierda. Afortunadamente, encima del acueducto siempre hay una pared sólida a la izquierda, por lo que mi vértigo no fue tan fuerte. Gracias! 😊

Me deu vertigem só de imaginar-me caminhando naquela altura, mas valeu muito a sua coragem, a vista compensou demais. Me lembra bastante o nosso aqueduto aqui no Rio de Janeiro, "Arcos da Lapa", não é tão extenso e nem tão alto, mas é bem turístico e com histórias de bandidos que se aproveitam dele para fazer seus crimes, principalmente à transeuntes distraídos.

This 52 km extension stone mason ( free waters aquedut ) was built to bring fresh water to lisbon by gravity from sintra mountains by tenacity of 3 kings died until project concluded. Still the tallest stone mason arches in the world , this remarkable monument is the biggest ever made in portugal in my opinion , impossible to built today because today politicians bla bla bla !!! I worked in 1966 in corner shop next to , memories !

Na realidade nem foi assim tão difícil, se o caminho lá em cima fosse exposto do lado esquerdo assim como é do lado direito, possivelmente não teria conseguido. Mas com aquela "parede" alta e sólida sempre ao meu lado eu sentia-me relativamente seguro (eu caminhava junto à parede e esticava o braço, no vídeo não dá pra perceber 😄), as minhas vertigens estavam pouco ativas.

Hello! 😊 Average income, well, it depends on many variables. The Portuguese economy is not as strong as most western european countries, so wages will be lower, although the cost of living is also lower. The Lisbon metropolitan area has the highest wages of the country. IT-related jobs are the ones that pay the most, I suppose, the ones with a lot of demand and not enough people with the required skills. Average monthly wage is above 1400 euros a month (paid 14 times a year, due to the Christmas and Summer bonus), but the average doesn't tell you much. It can go from 705 euros for low skilled work, which is the base minimum wage without any perks (again, 14 payments a year), to much higher wages.
The economy post-Covid is doing extremely well, unemployment is lower than the EU average, although with the rise of inflation and interest rates due to the war in Ukraine, things will get worse before they get better... Not only in Lisbon or Portugal, but everywhere, unfortunately.
Interesting story. I'd love to walk on top of that aqueduct (though I too suffer somewhat from fear of heights). Is it possible to walk all the way to the woodland (or shrubland) to the north of the houses, where there seems to be a kind of miradouro? Also: is it possible to enter from that end, or is the museum the only entry point?
Hello Jan-Tore! 😀 Theoretically yes, I think you can walk all the way to the woodland (Monsanto Park), realistically you'd probably get in trouble. There are cameras along the way, and you are supposed to turn back at the point indicated.
The museum is the only entry point.
Eu já tive oportunidade de percorrer este via desde Campolide (leste) até o parque do Monsanto (oeste), mas as visitas só tinham lugar num curto período em setembro. Não sei se atualmente ainda é assim. Uma vez chegados à mata podem-se percorrer vários percursos sem obrigatoriedade de regressar à origem.

Boa tarde não se preocupe em ter atrasado os vídeos a vida de todas as pessoas são assim cheia de altos e baixos e as vezes com muitos atalhos pelo caminho. Enfim percalços da vida estaremos sempre aqui apesar disso. Agora vamos ao comentário achei mórbido ver essa cabeça foi difícil pra mim mas conhecer toda a história desse aqueduto gostei embora também e agoniante olhar daquela altura não iria jamais lá em cima também tenho labirintite nunca andei em teleférico por conta desse problema. Curiosamente eu nem senti muitas vertigens lá em cima, porque do meu lado esquerdo tinha sempre uma parede sólida. As minhas vertigens ficam piores quando o "abismo" existe dos dois lados, a minha visão periférica deixa de ter pontos de referência. Por exemplo, tive mais vertigens logo no início do vídeo, passando por cima da estrada. 😅

Where's the water? you talked about the structure, but what happened to the water.
In the 1970s the aqueduct was completely decommissioned, so basically there was no water inside the structure anymore. However, there are plans to get the aqueduct back in operation this year, contributing to the redundancy of the water supply network. It could be useful in the event of drought, fires, etc.
