It really depends, Automation Engineer has become a really broad topic. you could be someone who works completely remote and just logs on to troubleshoot and make small changes. or site engineer where your always on site or an integrator which i am where you do both, most of programming & development can be done from home and all commissioning is done onsite over weeks or months depending on scale.

Engineering, Computer Science but a lot of new tools are now low-code, meaning little to no code is involved. You can actually become certified in high demand tools which can take like a month to learn depending on how ambitious you are, again no coding background needed
