This is what made Alexander realize the importance of that line and his impact as an actor, and that he isn't just some washed up has-been who used to be important, he still is, to at least one person. I think a lot of sci-fi fans feel the same way to certain characters and their iconic lines. This movie is over 20 years old now, and still such an underappreciated gem. It's not just about sci-fi or being an affectionate parody of things like Star Trek, this movie is absolutely about fandom and caring about something passionately that may be considered niche to others.
You hit the nail right on the head, Justin. The earnestness of the "By Grapthar's Hammer..." recitation in the last scene is surprisingly emotional BECAUSE we know he actually means it for the first time in his career. Great movie.
Indeed, at the start of the movie he despises interacting with fans and finds it so cringe, but he realizes in this scene that they adore him, and what his "acting" meant to them. Actors like Harrison Ford and William Shatner are kind of like Alexander Dane who see it as fandom mania, but it's mostly adoration and reverence. It is really hard to explain to people why this movie is so good, especially when I tell them the title of the movie they just laugh and dismiss it as a shitty knock off.

On the rare occasion that I find out a friend of mine has not seen it, I immediately invite them over to watch it - usually that night! And the cool thing is, then _I_ get to enjoy it all over again as they experience it for the first time. And every single time they are glad I told them about it and "made" them watch it. By the way, since Galaxy Quest is largely a fan love letter to Star Trek, a lot of fans of the movie are also big fans of Star Trek. So, on that note I *HIGHLY RECOMMEND* people have a look at the super high production value, fan-made "Star Trek Continues". It is Hollywood-level production values and was made by and for fans that are also people that work in the industry. Can't recommend it enough. They only made 11 episodes, due to how CBS/Paramount have handled that property, but it wraps up the original series quite nicely and sets up "Star Trek The Motion Picture" too. That last scene is always so touching. For the first time in his life, he REALLY meant it when he said it. Alan Rickman is truly a wonderful actor, both in comedy and drama. He deserves a knighthood.

Alan Rickman pulls off sarcasm and barely contained loathing like a boss this entire movie, playing a disillusioned English actor who used to be in theatre and is now only known for his role in a hit sci-fi franchise. Quellek is the embodiment of everything he finds distasteful, as someone who mistook a TV show for reality. The declaration of vengeance is the point he gains a newfound understanding about his role in pop culture (fictional heroes have as much impact on our lives as real ones), and embraces his fandom.
I nearly teared up the first time i watched this, the moment he recognizes the Importance of his role and how it has impacted other people whom need a Hero/Mentor or "Father-Figure" of their own; when none exist in their own lives.
I always loved that last scene, when he realizes it wasn't how big the role was to him, but how much it meant to others; he fully embraces what he considered a blight on his career as his greatest role ever. I don't know of many other actors who could have pulled this scene off so well, you'll be missed Mr. Rickman.

Alan Rickman is such a spectacular actor..... You can practically *FEEL* the self-loathing as he has to say "By Grabthar's Hammer......... what a savings". And you can feel the sorrow when he says it again for poor quellek.
One of the subtle things i love about this movie is that he always has his prosthetic head on. even in the one scene hes at home in his kitchen. Its like no matter how much he hates that he played an alien doctor, he cant deny its his identity now.
Only Alan Rickman could take such an incredibly cheesy line and turn it into a badass battle cry, and make you believe every damn syllable of it. Godspeed, you magnificent man...😔
This movie was funny and got me into a fit of laughter until this happened. I wasn't expecting anyone to actually die in the film, so I was really really shocked. I think Quellek represents the fans who find solace in fandoms and fictional characters. As a fan of way too many TV shows, films and books, I understand that not all actors and writers take fans seriously, but sometimes, fandoms really do become important for the fan. Quellek could easily have been a fan who did not belong in his family and thus looked up to Dr. Lazarus instead. Alexander obviously thought the boy was only being ridiculous, confusing reality for fiction, just like the other fans on Earth. But his death was what made Alexander realise the impact Dr. Lazarus and the show itself had on fans like Quellek, that faint smile on Quellek's lips just before he dies is what spurs Alexander into action. It is what allows him to understand that fandoms are very important to some individuals and that it is not ridiculous at all.

Reminds me of a story James Doohan once told about receiving a suicide note from a fan. He called her, got her to come to a convention, then another and another, until she just stopped. 8 years later, she sends him a letter on how she now has a Masters degree in engineering.
Also, watch his eyes before he says the line to Quellek. There is a moment where he is searching for what to say and then a moment of revelation where he realised that “By grabthar’s hammer” is not a ‘silly line’ as he declared at the start of the film. It’s a phrase that people gravitated towards because “you shall be avenged” implies that Dr Lazarus cares so deeply about others he will carry on their legacy into his own life. Hats off to Alan Rickman for delivering that revelation so superbly. Finding the importance in words as he is saying them and conveying it all through his eyes and tone.
Man that scene at 2:27 was brilliant. He spends the whole movie up to this point, basically having to be forced to say that line...But the one time he voluntarily says it...It really meant something, and he really meant it. I love when they infuse (Feelings) into comedies like this. R.I.P Alan Rickman. I'll miss you.

When someone in his or her innocence admits on the point of death from murder that he views you as a father, it will naturally bring forth such a wellspring of hate against the murderer that he or she better run.

At 1:21, this is a marvelous example of context. Every time the phrase is used before this scene, it is ridiculed, disparaged and mocked. Suddenly, in a situation of deep emotion, it resonates as a pledge to a dying man. Rickman's reading is poignant and profound. Kudos to the writers for showing how quickly a viewers' focus can dive into pathos from a platform of comedy. Excellent! The music underscores the feeling, too.
+A ctionMS I think what sets it apart from other spoof movies is that it seems like a spoof movie but it really isn't one.Spaceballs would be an actual spoof movie in that it broadly parodies the characters and scenarios you'd find in space adventure films,in a similar way that Airplane does with certain disaster films.But GQ really starts off as a straight comedy,looking at the indignities suffered by the typecast actors of a bygone hit series,and then does something fairly rare by morphing into a different genre and actually becoming a space adventure movie itself,albeit a more light-hearted,comic one.

Slightly unrelated to Galaxy Quest, but the British sitcom Fawlty Towers was a significant part of my life as it (along with Only Fools and Horses and Blackadder) helped me as someone with Asperger's Syndrome understand sarcasm and figures of speech and overcome a lot of communication barriers. A few years ago, I performed two episodes of Fawlty Towers with my amateur dramatics society, one specifically was the "Waldorf Salad" episode and I played the American, Mr. Hamilton. Not only was it a fun role to play, but after we wrapped, the bloke who played Basil told us that a woman came into his hardware store and said that her husband died recently and because of the show, she'd laughed for the first time in ages. How that relates to this is that it shows that entertainment can indeed mean something to people; Fawlty Towers helped me overcome a significant mental block and helped a woman heal through laughter. That's why I'll always be a proud fan of British comedy, like Quellek was of Galaxy Quest.
The mark of any great comedy, in my opinion, is that it not only makes you laugh, but also contrasts the humor with other emotions. This scene, even now, gets me emotional. Such a fantastic, and underrated movie. Such a fantastic and underrated actor.
Alan Rickman was a master class actor the weight he brought to a movie like this, that another actor could've easily cheesed up, he brought a humorous yet, emotional depth to the character of Dr. Lazarus, like he did with so many of his roles. Very sad to hear of his passing, but he lives on with his on screen performances which is why I love film.

With six children we drove on family vacations. When we had a van we would put a small TV with a built in VHS and eventually a built in DVD player on a ice chest between the driver and passenger seats. Our adult children can still quote lines from Galaxy Quest, Princes Bride, Sandlot and many others. This line is one of their favorites!!!! This brings back some crazy memories.
What a brilliant role for Alan Rickman. He just nailed it and was among the funniest in every scene. The way he just grabs that second autograph, the timing was perfect.
The thing about this movie, is that it was so good that every Star Trek movie that came after it had to be as good or better. "Star Trek: Nemesis" failed, and like Star Trek V, let's pretend it never existed. Star Trek (XI) and Into Darkness (XII) were of sufficient quality.... but this will the benchmark for me forever. And Alan Rickman IS INDEED a God among insects.

This is why Galaxy Quest is a perfect movie, it pokes fun at fandom, while still celebrating it. Are there dark sides of fandom? Absolutely. Every single one has a dark, slimy side. Just look at Tumblr or Twitter. But this last scene shows just how important a fandom can be. Many of us find comfort in the thing we so passionately love; sports, kpop, TV shows. They are what we turn to when we are having a bad day. When we have no where else to go, we can always go this place. And finding people who love what we love. Life long friendships are made because of fandoms. Sometimes, we don't have a family, so we make one here. Quellek was the perfect representation of that. Someone who genuinely loved and found comfort in his "fandom" and allowed him that solace and comfort until his final moments. Alexander always saw fans as stupid or childish, and made him think he wasted his career on a ridiculous TV show. But Quellek showed him that this TV show made a real difference and brought joy and hope to people.
This just goes to show how good Alan Rickman is. This was a parody movie, the line itself humorously nonsensical, and yet Alan managed to make you feel that moment and actually tear up a bit, and the palpable anger, the sense of justice that demanded to be served. A moment of sincere drama in the middle of a comedy movie. THAT is how good Alan Rickman was/is/ever will be. o7
That emotion when he had dying Quellek in his arms. His face is restrained however you can sense the sadness and concern. Typical actors would do a rush of emotion. However since the characters are really not that close, that kind of restrained reaction is on point.

How an empty catchphrase or a line that seems silly or stupid, suddenly becomes in the spine of a series of beliefs, something really worth living or even dying for. This last scene is too great at too many levels... Just like the movie. Represent at the same time the goofyness and the real, master writting that Star Trek TOS had, both at the same time... That's not easy.
When that guy dies, and he says the line, Rickman managed to make this scene an epic, moving moment. And bear in mind this is a comedy. A truly amazing actor indeed.

I like how this entire movie, which is meant to be a parody of Star Trek and other similar sci-fi hits, manages to have far deeper and more interesting character development than something like Star Trek: Discovery.
That being said, Discovery actually does have character development. Conservative Trekkies just freak out that it's "woke" (and forget, you know, that that's been a thing since TOS)
Discovery is NuTrek so it doesn't count, same as Picard, Lower Decks S2 second half is actually great S1 is pretty bad, Prodigy is getting better and SNW is just rehashed old ideas nothing new but it's a bit better NuTrek. The main problem is they are ruining legacy characters, if those shows were set in the future from the beginning or in a different timeline/universe people probably wouldn't mind!

What we must strive to end are all the things that make death a petty and vile sneak-thief rather than a release from pain and suffering. Kill cancer in all its forms, slay jealousy, terminate ignorance and its shadow greed. But most of all strive to perfect Human memory so that it shall be forever inviolate, and therein, those who have given us so much will be granted immortality in every heart which has ever felt the touch of another human soul.
Thanks for putting this compilation together. The final scene as Kwellek lies dying is one of my favorite scenes in cinema. It's set up so well (as you have shown!) and perfectly acted by all involved. RIP

I hadn’t noticed this when I sat through Galaxy Quest, but the thumbnail for this clip - the tableau of the crew gathered around the dying comrade, the hand held to the victim’s brow - seems to be a clever homage to Benjamin West’s painting of ‘The Death of Nelson’ (at the Battle of Trafalgar). Kudos to the director and editors!

I know there's going to be a lot of pictures and videos of Snape today, but this is still my favorite role that Alan Rickman ever played, with Metatron (from Dogma) being a close runner-up.
This movie is a love letter to science fiction and to Sci fi fans. It is so brilliantly written the entire movie literally is building up to this scene. For people who are our fans and understand Fandom This movie is actually very touching.. Everybody else sit from the outside maybe it feels a little silly. As a fan of way too many TV shows, films and books, I understand that not all actors and writers take fans seriously, but sometimes, fandoms really do become important for the fan. Quellek could easily have been a fan who did not belong in his family and thus looked up to Dr. Lazarus instead. Alexander obviously thought the boy was only being ridiculous, confusing reality for fiction, just like the other fans on Earth. But his death was what made Alexander realise the impact Dr. Lazarus and the show itself had on fans like Quellek, that faint smile on Quellek's lips just before he dies is what spurs Alexander into action. It is what allows him to understand that fandoms are very important to some individuals and that it is not ridiculous at all.

Reminds me of a story James Doohan once told about receiving a suicide note from a fan. He called her, got her to come to a convention, then another and another, until she just stopped. 8 years later, she sends him a letter on how she now has a Masters degree in engineering.
Also, watch his eyes before he says the line to Quellek. There is a moment where he is searching for what to say and then a moment of revelation where he realised that “By grabthar’s hammer” is not a ‘silly line’ as he declared at the start of the film.
It’s a phrase that people gravitated towards because “you shall be avenged” implies that Dr Lazarus cares so deeply about others he will carry on their legacy into his own life.
Hats off to Alan Rickman for delivering that revelation so superbly. Finding the importance in words as he is saying them and conveying it all through his eyes and tone.
The true test of a great actor: Make us laugh with a ridiculous line then move us to tears with it. Brilliant!

Man that scene at 2:27 was brilliant. He spends the whole movie up to this point, basically having to be forced to say that line...But the one time he voluntarily says it...It really meant something, and he really meant it. I love when they infuse (Feelings) into comedies like this.

At 1:21, this is a marvelous example of context. Every time the phrase is used before this scene, it is ridiculed, disparaged and mocked. Suddenly, in a situation of deep emotion, it resonates as a pledge to a dying man. Rickman's reading is poignant and profound. Kudos to the writers for showing how quickly a viewers' focus can dive into pathos from a platform of comedy. Excellent! The music underscores the feeling, too.

There are a lot of spoof movies out there, most of them suck. But I consider Galaxy Quest to even surpass the films it is based on.
+A ctionMS I think what sets it apart from other spoof movies is that it seems like a spoof movie but it really isn't one.Spaceballs would be an actual spoof movie in that it broadly parodies the characters and scenarios you'd find in space adventure films,in a similar way that Airplane does with certain disaster films.But GQ really starts off as a straight comedy,looking at the indignities suffered by the typecast actors of a bygone hit series,and then does something fairly rare by morphing into a different genre and actually becoming a space adventure movie itself,albeit a more light-hearted,comic one.

I cannot recall any comedy having a more poignant line delivered by a greater actor than what Alan does here. It literally brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. RIP Mr. Rickman.
Slightly unrelated to Galaxy Quest, but the British sitcom Fawlty Towers was a significant part of my life as it (along with Only Fools and Horses and Blackadder) helped me as someone with Asperger's Syndrome understand sarcasm and figures of speech and overcome a lot of communication barriers.
A few years ago, I performed two episodes of Fawlty Towers with my amateur dramatics society, one specifically was the "Waldorf Salad" episode and I played the American, Mr. Hamilton. Not only was it a fun role to play, but after we wrapped, the bloke who played Basil told us that a woman came into his hardware store and said that her husband died recently and because of the show, she'd laughed for the first time in ages.
How that relates to this is that it shows that entertainment can indeed mean something to people; Fawlty Towers helped me overcome a significant mental block and helped a woman heal through laughter. That's why I'll always be a proud fan of British comedy, like Quellek was of Galaxy Quest.
The mark of any great comedy, in my opinion, is that it not only makes you laugh, but also contrasts the humor with other emotions. This scene, even now, gets me emotional. Such a fantastic, and underrated movie. Such a fantastic and underrated actor.
Silly, ridiculous, goofy and a hell of a lot of fun, but damned if he doesn't deliver chills at this moment. Fabulous actor and an icon. RIP.
To this day this scene still chokes me up, Rickman was a treasure of an actor and you could truly feel the sorrow and rage his character felt.

Alan Rickman was a master class actor the weight he brought to a movie like this, that another actor could've easily cheesed up, he brought a humorous yet, emotional depth to the character of Dr. Lazarus, like he did with so many of his roles. Very sad to hear of his passing, but he lives on with his on screen performances which is why I love film.

With six children we drove on family vacations. When we had a van we would put a small TV with a built in VHS and eventually a built in DVD player on a ice chest between the driver and passenger seats. Our adult children can still quote lines from Galaxy Quest, Princes Bride, Sandlot and many others. This line is one of their favorites!!!! This brings back some crazy memories.
What a brilliant role for Alan Rickman. He just nailed it and was among the funniest in every scene. The way he just grabs that second autograph, the timing was perfect.
Alan Rickman was an amazing actor. Without him this movie would have not been nearly as awesome.

My favorite scene in the film. Rickman's delivery of The LIne to his dying fan is so absolutely pitch perfect it is breathtaking.

The thing about this movie, is that it was so good that every Star Trek movie that came after it had to be as good or better. "Star Trek: Nemesis" failed, and like Star Trek V, let's pretend it never existed. Star Trek (XI) and Into Darkness (XII) were of sufficient quality.... but this will the benchmark for me forever.
And Alan Rickman IS INDEED a God among insects.

This is why Galaxy Quest is a perfect movie, it pokes fun at fandom, while still celebrating it.
Are there dark sides of fandom? Absolutely. Every single one has a dark, slimy side. Just look at Tumblr or Twitter.
But this last scene shows just how important a fandom can be. Many of us find comfort in the thing we so passionately love; sports, kpop, TV shows. They are what we turn to when we are having a bad day. When we have no where else to go, we can always go this place. And finding people who love what we love. Life long friendships are made because of fandoms. Sometimes, we don't have a family, so we make one here. Quellek was the perfect representation of that. Someone who genuinely loved and found comfort in his "fandom" and allowed him that solace and comfort until his final moments.
Alexander always saw fans as stupid or childish, and made him think he wasted his career on a ridiculous TV show. But Quellek showed him that this TV show made a real difference and brought joy and hope to people.
This just goes to show how good Alan Rickman is. This was a parody movie, the line itself humorously nonsensical, and yet Alan managed to make you feel that moment and actually tear up a bit, and the palpable anger, the sense of justice that demanded to be served. A moment of sincere drama in the middle of a comedy movie.
THAT is how good Alan Rickman was/is/ever will be. o7

That emotion when he had dying Quellek in his arms. His face is restrained however you can sense the sadness and concern. Typical actors would do a rush of emotion. However since the characters are really not that close, that kind of restrained reaction is on point.

It’s a homage
How an empty catchphrase or a line that seems silly or stupid, suddenly becomes in the spine of a series of beliefs, something really worth living or even dying for. This last scene is too great at too many levels... Just like the movie. Represent at the same time the goofyness and the real, master writting that Star Trek TOS had, both at the same time... That's not easy.
When that guy dies, and he says the line, Rickman managed to make this scene an epic, moving moment. And bear in mind this is a comedy. A truly amazing actor indeed.
So glad you put this together. As for all of the silliness in the movie, when he utters those words (no longer just a line)... It's the absolute coolest moment in the movie! Thanks again for puttin' this all together.

I like how this entire movie, which is meant to be a parody of Star Trek and other similar sci-fi hits, manages to have far deeper and more interesting character development than something like Star Trek: Discovery.
It helps that no one was out to hate this movie the way they were determined to hate Discovery before it came out.
That being said, Discovery actually does have character development. Conservative Trekkies just freak out that it's "woke" (and forget, you know, that that's been a thing since TOS)

Discovery is NuTrek so it doesn't count, same as Picard, Lower Decks S2 second half is actually great S1 is pretty bad, Prodigy is getting better and SNW is just rehashed old ideas nothing new but it's a bit better NuTrek. The main problem is they are ruining legacy characters, if those shows were set in the future from the beginning or in a different timeline/universe people probably wouldn't mind!

Thanks for putting this compilation together. The final scene as Kwellek lies dying is one of my favorite scenes in cinema. It's set up so well (as you have shown!) and perfectly acted by all involved.

Of all the times he hated that line, when it came to showing compassion to his fallen comrade, that is when he actually knew its true meaning, when his alien friend fell......then he knew to say his catchphrase with meaning.
I remember when I saw this in the theater when he was running down the hall to get that guy after shooting him the crowd was cheering Hans Hans Hans........
There are few actors in history who can say the same line many times in a movie and illicit a completely different emotional response each time. From funny, to sarcastic, to irritating to making me cry. Genius.

I hadn’t noticed this when I sat through Galaxy Quest, but the thumbnail for this clip - the tableau of the crew gathered around the dying comrade, the hand held to the victim’s brow - seems to be a clever homage to Benjamin West’s painting of ‘The Death of Nelson’ (at the Battle of Trafalgar). Kudos to the director and editors!
My God, the way he said it when he meant it, gives me chills when I think about it to this day.
I guess it's the sappy nerd in me, but the part where he says "even though we had never before met, I always considered you as a father to me." Always gets me a little teary eyed.

I know there's going to be a lot of pictures and videos of Snape today, but this is still my favorite role that Alan Rickman ever played, with Metatron (from Dogma) being a close runner-up.

This movie is a love letter to science fiction and to Sci fi fans. It is so brilliantly written the entire movie literally is building up to this scene. For people who are our fans and understand Fandom This movie is actually very touching.. Everybody else sit from the outside maybe it feels a little silly. But Alan Rickman You have got to give the casting director The props for really welcasting this movie
