I don't think Alan gets enough credit for how difficult his role was and how well he executed it. Same with Helena Bonham Carter. I think they had the best acting of everyone who's been in the movies. Gold Snake his character was also very straight forward. i think he acts exactly like jk rowling had harry act. i don't think the role really gave him a chance to show off his acting ability because it's not like his role really took much skill to master imo.
i don't think people give HBC enough credit for the way she made a small role have such a huge impact in the movies. i don't think anyone could've played bellatrix better than her. it's actually kind of scary how well HBC and Alan executed their roles.

When I watch Alan's scenes after Dumbledore's death, I'm always struck by the pain in Snape's eyes and the halting manner with which he speaks, as though every word is a struggle to get out.
Knowing what we do now, we understand his sorrow at having to kill Dumbledore, his misery at having to carry on as headmaster and maintain his double-agent status under Voldemort, and the simultaneous desire to save the child of the woman he loved and the repulsion for that child who so closely resembled his most hated rival and tormentor.
Only a truly great actor could convey all those emotions without resorting to exposition and explaining how he felt about all those things. What a shame to have lost him so early.

I love how he played that scene. The way Snape lowers the wand for a fraction of a second when facing McGonagall is down right triple-agent. He knows he won't appreciate if the he ends up hurting a fellow colleague but he can't back away from his death eater role so he just flees the castle. It's very well played and consistent with the caracter. RIP Alan. What a great actor.

Going to the lowering wand comment, he also never attacks AND deflects 2 of them into "fellow" death eaters. I'm wondering if Professor Mcgonagall ever picked up on this though as I would assume that they had been working together for 15+ years, she would know a lot about the ex-potions/ex-DA/headmaster. Not attacking once and fleeing? That's some high ranking positions to give across Hogwarts and yet seem to not be able to duel. Props to everyone in the movies, and even more so to the ones that had to fill incredibly complex rolls such as Alan Rickman. You know you performed the part masterfully when even audio book readers attempt to impersonate the voice and don't even TRY to create a different one

You watch that scene and you can see the mixed emotions in Snape. The anger that people think he is so evil to have betrayed Dumbledore, the courage he has to know that he is working to defeat Voldemort, and the anguish that he feels seeing Lily Potter’s eyes filled with hate for him never knowing he loved her. Alan Rickman was brilliant in the scene. Could anyone else have played that? I doubt it.

i love how snape obviously didn't want to hurt anyone at Hogwarts. He looked very sad when killing Dombeldore, very apologetic when they were having a meeting with voldemort and a Hogwarts teacher was killed and even during this scene with McGonagall, he only defended himself but never attacked her and even attracked the fire she was throwing at him to kill the 2 death eaters behind him, never once attacking her. It really showed where his heart was even tho his past was a death eater ..

I love the scene with McGonagal vs Snape. When she steps in front of Harry and Snape lowers his wand, the look of regret/sorrow on his face and the way he twists his wand, he didn’t want to fight her. He respected her and even probably considered her a “friend” (as much as Snape could consider someone a friend). Notice he never fights back. He defends himself and flees. I think he knew if he dueled her he’d kill her, I believe he was that strong, but that’s not what he wanted to do. So he fled. That’s one of my very favourite scenes in any HP movie. And Alan Rickman played it so perfectly. He was the most perfect person to play Snape. And by the third book I knew there was SOMETHING about Snape that we didn’t know. He was more than just a bully and death eater. I didn’t know what, but I knew it was something (I thought he might actually be Harry’s dad).

What a great actor. The end of Deathly Hallows made me gasp from one 10 second scene.
Nobody else could've played that part.

Alan Rickman had this almost uniquely British quality of listening to the question before attempting to answer it. The self deprecation and dry humor come as standard of course.

If only there was a way they could have continued Snape's story line indefinitely....knowing the dedication of Mr. Alan Rickman, he would have refused to die, in order to continue in the role of Snape.

The funny thing about Snapes character is that from the first movie you kind of knew he was a decent guy because he was doing the counter curses to save Harry from the cursed Broom. Yet between 6 other movies its easy to forget that. For me even without seeing the last movie I knew something was up because he was always doing things to prepare or protect Harry and other students.

his answer to the last question is so perfect ... it shows how much he was interested in the part from the start ... when he said yes for the first one he was ready to go all the way with it and wasnt going to let anything stop him ... THAT is what made alan rickman so special as an actor ... when he said yes you knew he meant yes 100% ... and that he would give his best at all times ... THAT is a STAR

I don’t understand why Snape was scary to some people. I always loved him. From the very beginning. He was the most interesting and enigmatic and fascinating character in the entire films. Every time he was on screen, he smoldered. I knew he was tortured, tragic, yet he had goodness in him. Long before the movies revealed just that. I could see it in him. A kind of simmering power and great burden of soul but also good yet tortured and very, very smart. And much more than met the eye. Yet GOOD. No one, NO ONE believed me. Until the very end. Thank you Mr. Rickman for such an iconic, unbelievably incredible performance and playing a character that no one could have gotten exactly right but you. You will be forever missed, and always loved, and always my favorite Harry Potter character. Always. ❤️

You never read the books, did you? He was unjustifiably nasty and unfair in the books to all students (save those in Slytherin), not just Harry, and there are several scenes that are either cut completely from the movies are modified such that they don't carry the full impact of how awful he's really supposed to be or how untrustworthy we're supposed to think he is until we finally see his memories that prove his loyalties at the end of book 7. Best example off the top of my head of such modification is in book 6 during the scene when Narcissa went to Snape to ask his help for Draco's sake. In the movie, that scene was just about getting his help, but in the book, Snape gave an answer to every instance of questionable loyalty (to Bellatrix who was distrustful of him) including: why Snape never sought out Voldemort after his fall, why Snape prevented Voldemort from stealing the Philosopher's Stone, why Snape didn't come immediately to Voldemort's side when he was first summoned after his rebirth, why Snape didn't help fight at the Ministry, and why Harry was still alive after having been at Hogwarts near Snape for five years. In hindsight, we know his answers were the lies he used to stay in Voldemort's good graces to be an effective spy, but at the time of reading, we did not have any idea if these were lies or truths because we didn't know why Dumbledore was so certain that Snape was trustworthy.
