  • This tutorial covers the continuous forehand loop that everyone loves. Please leave comments on what I can improve or suggestions for future videos!
    Edit: 7:43 is missing some audio. 2-2 Forehand Drill means 2 forehands from the forehand side, and 2 forehands from the backhand side

    Liked the comment about the "sweet spot" being just above the knee. Feel like it is something good to work on. Really well done.

      Hey Brian, I'd like to make an adjustment to that statement. The sweetspot is a little different for every player because we all have different physical builds and ways of looping. For me, my sweet spot is directly in front of my chest. I made a generalization in the video, but you should do what feels right to you. Sorry I didn't make that clear!

    These are all very good tips. However i think in depth videos on how to practice each tip would be helpful. For example, RELAX is a key part of looping, and the answer is to relax before you hit the ball. Easier said than done. Perhaps go in detail on which parts of the body should be relaxed and how it might affect the external form of the player if the player is not relaxed

    Make a video on making a BH "twister" block or also known as the backhand sidespin block or sidespin chop that players like Walther Ricardo or Ma Long tend to do quite a lot in matches and when the ball comes back, the opponents usually tends to push it because of the backspin that is on the ball. What is interesting is how they use the legwork and bend their upperbody sideways when they're making the twister block.

    Thanks for the video. I like all the attention to minute detail.
    I think the biggest improvement you could make would be do something about the floor vibration. Not sure if that just means using a better tripod or a camera with better image stabilization.

    BRIAN there is so much information you know and understand quicker than the majority of players. I would suggest, not that I know much, to explain what were to happen a player contacts early or late or is too tense. i.e. too early hit in the net or short of it. height is also important. Wu is gets low even though he is of the lower height club like me.

      Thanks Adrian. I've gotten a lot of feedback from friends that I should create a video that's more detailed. My only worry is that the time would really long (30+ minutes). If that's what everyone wants, I'd gladly do it though :)

    There is some nice advice here. The idea of relaxing the upper body while being strong with the legs is a difficult one for a lot of players. The point about blocking and not getting too crazy with angles so your partner can actually practice is a good one. What do your friend Brian use on the forehand? H3 I'm guessing? He has really solid technique and it looks like he has a diverse set of shots on his forehand, real mastery of it.

    First off I would like to thank you for the video!
    I only have one question, when you are doing forehand loop, does your paddle tend to "slip" out of your hand? I've read that you should "pinch" your racket with your thumb and index finger, but after I do like 10 loops, my grip starts to slip

      I think sometimes people take those words too literally. I’ve seen others with the same issue. Pinch with those two fingers doesn’t mean to stop holding with your other fingers. Make sure to have a firm grip of your paddle and add extra pinch of those two fingers on top. Hope that makes sense!

    You need to extend your arm more during the back-swing. It's much more energy-efficient to flex the elbow than swing the entire arm from the shoulder. As you start your upward motion, the elbow must be at about 150 degrees, not 90 or 100.

    i would like to ask question about the arms. for the hitting arm. how much tension is in the arm? how much flexion do you want in the arm? and the timing of the tension. you did talk about relax, accelerate, relax...but is this the legs then core right? what about the arm? is it relaxed the whole time? (not loosey goosy relax, but medium?) or is there contraction of the arm muscles (biceps? forearm?) right at contact? you want to articulate the arm for better spin right?
    also..for the non-hitting arm. at minute 5:50 .. the non hitting harm (seems to me) to be not doing much. is this the case? it's just hanging there kinda not involved much? or should the non-hitting arm rotate w/ the body some?
    i'm asking all this because i'm one of those (beginner level) arm hitters...and i need to discard this bad habit and do what this video describes. so perhaps this is the exact opposite of what i do now (high tension in the arm/shoulder, swinging mostly thru the arm).
    i hope to improve this. thanks for the video and tips!

    I think perception is underemphasized because everyone takes it as a given. You really have to work well with perceptual focus to get the timing right and to anticipate what is coming feom the cues from the oponent.

    Hey PandaPong, I love the video. Thank you for posting. I have a question; What do you mean by "grabbing the ball"? Is that the same as, letting the ball sink into the rubber? Please expound, thank you!

      Yes of course. To me, it feels like the ball sinks into the rubber and I hold it there, and l launch it wherever I want. It really feels like I’m holding onto the ball with my rubber and I’m throwing the ball back. Hope that helps!

      @@PandaPong That helps a tremendous amount. I really, really enjoy the videos and the reply. Is it safe to assume that you play with a slower but tacky rubber. Such has DHS Hurricane? So that you can accomplish this?

      I don’t play with hurricane. I play with MX-K, which had a similar topsheet to MXP. It is grippy but not tacky

    all of them sounds like a power loop, and not the kind of timo boll opener super thin hit kinda loop. it seems like you dont see any of the chinese use this stroke. my trainer is focusing a lot on those, and he makes all new players play with soft and springy rubbers so they can do it. I decided to start playing with chinese rubbers on forehand with a flexible blade, however, so this thin hit is not so easy, but my forehand topspin stroke developed nicely after a few months. my trainer even raises the net with the young players and does multiball where they are supposed to loop underspin ball over a heigthened net. since I am an adult learner with an athletic background, I have plenty of muscle to put into a powerloop ... but I dont know if I should try to get a hang of this precise thin hitting loop. I feel like my next step is to get into a stiffer faster blade of the same grade that I am using to develop a better backhand stroke, and be able to punch the ball with backhand as well.

    9:32 I think there needs to be a sidenote to your note: it might be confusing to say that all the acceleration needs to happen at the same time because you are loading up tension in your body that acts like a whip, so some things start to move first and then transfers energy in a kinetic chain. Timo Boll does this by leading with his shoulder, but there might be other ways as well. My point is that the horizontal movement lags behind and loads on to the vertical movement and explodes onto the ball when the racket intersects the pathway of the ball.

      I though the same when watching this video. Timo Boll has a video where he explains that his arm moves a little after his hip. It can be apreciated here, but at 0,25 x and the lag is very subtle: czcams.com/video/yTwIsb0y0ro/video.html
      Malong (czcams.com/video/QC866oJ2z2w/video.html) and Xuxin (czcams.com/video/QC866oJ2z2w/video.html) seem to have that same lag in their forehand strokes.
      Nevertheless, most tutorials about forehand say the same as in this video and I didn't notice that lag until I watched Boll's explanation.

    What are the approximate BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES that you personally use for your OPENING FOREHAND LOOP against HEAVY BACKSPIN? And how do these same angles compare to the BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES you personally use for your FOREHAND COUNTER-LOOPS against HEAVY TOPSPIN?

      It depends on the amount of backspin. Generally the angle should be more open for underspin if you want a safer spinny loop. For topspin counter, the angle needs to be closed more and the stroke has to be totally forward

      I use an innerforce ZLC. That’s not too common though. Popular choices include viscaria, timo boll alc, korbel, and primorac. Many loopers use tenergy 05 or MXP.

      The best way is open to close, like you’re wrapping over the ball. It’s easiest to generate topspin this way, which is the whole point of brushing

    The description of movements is way too technical, and not how good players actually learn their shots. Instead they have some idea (ie feel for) how much pressure to apply to the ball, and either have (the naturally athletic) or develop some intuition for how to efficiently apply that pressure.
