I don't think you understand the complexity of this movie. Its animation is flawless, with voice actors that rival those in the godfather. It's actually telling the tale of a rat gone insane through the tolls of mankind's sewers, and these are his hallucinations. Every animation hiccup is just him relapsing back into reality.
No, the animation looks like Foodfight! but way better than it.

@@JustinY. Yeah, it's like some sort of illusion. Reality is a joke. Lucid dreams are insanity. I'm sure animation makes you dizzy and more unsatisfying to watch but it's hilarious of how bad it is!

I remember watching this as a kid. My friends parents were throwing a Christmas party, the kind where they drink and kids stay in a room. There was nothing to watch except this.
It must have been a fun night!
They clearly were drinking soley so they could enjoy this movie in some way.

This really does remind me of Foodfight though...
I don't know if it makes it better or worse that they have a lot of the broad story strokes...
Marie's godfather Herr Drosselmeyer, an inventor, gifts her a nutcracker soldier, but her brother breaks it. She also meets Herr Drosselmeyer's nephew at a Christmas party thrown by her parents. She later falls asleep on the couch cuddled up with the "injured" soldier, and dreams of a battle between the toy soldiers and the mice, culminating in a battle between the Rat King and the Nutcracker. Marie shrinking is actually iconic, as many productions put a great deal of effort into the Christmas tree that grows on stage. The Nutcracker (danced by the same dancer as the nephew) then ushers her to the Land of the Sweets, ruled over by the Sugarplum Fairy, who welcomes them and has her subjects perform for them.
And they have a lot of those story strokes! I could even buy the nuts also being part of the Sugarplum Fairy's court, as they're divided out into different themes -- Mexican hot chocolate, Arabian coffee, the Candy Canes, etc. etc. So the... Nuts... theoretically could fit into the mythos! And I could see a retelling of the story where the Rat King tries to enslave the Sugarplum Fairy's subjects and kidnaps Marie-- you do some interesting stuff with that!
But then this movie just *didn't*. And did... whatever it is that it did.
And I think that's more baffling than just making a completely nonsensical movie. They had good source material to work with that's rife for new interpretations, and this is what they did?
Baffling.
Also, Nutboy.
(If anyone's interested in the full "classic" story of The Nutcracker, there's a performance by the New York City Ballet on Netflix. The recording is over 25 years old but the same choreography is still used today, so you'll get a good enough idea. Also it has Macaulay Culkin as the newphew/Nutcracker.)
You could've done a much better movie.

So. I was born in 1995. Sadly I was in the target demographic for this movie and they hit a bull's eye. I watched this MULTIPLE times as a child. The fairy and the rat king were my favorite characters. It has been long buried in the deep recesses of my mind. Since it's resurfacing I am now in the midst of an existential crisis so...thank you for this HILARIOUS video. It's just what the doctor ordered 😁

Jimmy Neutron is disguised as the princess. Now, without the mentioning, Debi Derryberry’s performance wasn’t that good, as the princess sounds more like a child. Also, the alternate title for this movie honestly should be called “A NutTales Christmas”
Why is Debi Derryberry in these bad movies? She can't go from my favorite boy genius to some like Jessica from Trolland!

6:25 I didn't recognize this movie at all as you reviewed it, but a tiny part of me thought something looked familiar. Suddenly, as I'm watching again and I hear the Jamacan nut say "FOOOD FIIIIIIGHTTT," I began to realize something.
I HAVE SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE, but in a trailer on some VHS movie I watched a ton as a kid. I don't remember exactly what movie I saw, but it was definitely Columbia Pictures movie since their brand introduced this trailer.
Anyway though. I found the trailer I saw on CZcams and I realized very quickly that it totally LIED. The whole movie was advertised as a battle between vegetables and rats in someone's living room to put the star back on the Christmas tree. None of the human characters were shown at all in the trailer and none of the scenes after leaving the living room were shown either.
Isn't that sketchy that only a small portion of a movie was shown to you in a trailer and that portion only contained the vegetables and nut characters? They didn't even advertise that poor Jim Cummings was a voice in the movie! I'm pretty sure they wanted to keep all the human characters as hidden from the public as possible. What a bunch of manipulative people.
It was in front of Stuart Little on VHS, I believe.

I could not stop laughing at this review. I mean I didn't even know this thing existed. I was digging the gospel chorus. I mean everything is out of left field. And what's up with the little peanut boy's walk? LOL!!!

You know the more I watch this, the more I start thinking they copied a few plot elements from the Barbie version of the nutcracker. I watched the Barbie version nearly hundreds of times as a kid and still remember so much of it to this day. Not many Nutcracker movies have Clara dressed in pink, which Clara in the Barbie version did, and the long blonde hair too. Also, the ending where the prince shows up randomly in Clara's home was also in the Barbie version, although in that version, it was vague whether or not he was the same Nutcracker Clara knew.
I've seen so many versions of the Nutcracker, but the only version I've seen these two plot elements show up in was the Barbie version. Unless more well known versions have these elements, I'm convinced this movie copied from the Barbie movie.
tbh I like this verison more because I saw it first and the rat king was funny/redeemed in this version, plus less prince bashing, but when I finally saw the Barbie one I have to admit that they DEFINITELY had one referencing the other. Also Disney copied Barbie as Rapunzel for Tangled, both movies are good but it's definitely inspired by the Barbie version, and I miss good barbie movies :(

So, in the original Nutcracker story: Clara (the girl) gets shrunken by magic, watches the Nutcracker duel with the Mouse King, kisses the Nutcracker and returns him to his original Prince form, then they go to his home (Candy land) and there's a party. That's it. Most adaptations move the duel and transformation to later in the story, after they've gone to Candy land, to make it more interesting.
I think all you need to do to improve this movie is get rid of all the food characters. Then you have a whacky Nutcracker movie without the annoyances.
