- Day 3 of my landscape photography road trip in my self converted mini 4x4 camper van. I arrive in Wales for some hiking and sunset photography in the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. I hike up Pen Y Fan with my Fujifilm GFX 50r and enjoy a cold, but beautiful evening at the summit. I sleep in my coverted Mitsubishi Delica van which is the perfect base camp for a landscape photographer. I hope you enjoy this video.

This fella went out his comfy and warm blanket, out the van to capture few seconds video of the hailstorm in the middle of the night, just to make the video looks a little more complete. I bet he got soaked.
Any other youtuber would have just point the camera through the window, make a record and done with it.
That is dedication.
I clicked “Like” TWICE for his extra effort. Well done Thomas.
If you click it twice you remove your like. You must thus click it thrice! 😄😉
@@nicola6323 , i clicked thrice and added some more.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Haha, B Roll is king. And, yes I got soaked.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto you truly are the king of B roll!👍🏽😁
Great video Thomas, nice to see you out on the road and putting that van to good use. Looking forward to the next leg of your trip, as always an inspiration.
I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to drive to some place, set up the tripod and camera, hit record, go back, drive again trough the same spot and then go back to get the camera, same when you're on foot and do this over and over all by yourself just so we, the viewers can have a sense of where you are and where you're going... so much work! These videos are great, super relaxing! Props mate!
100% expected that dinner result when I saw it go in the jacket. Was not disappointed.
Haha I saw it too and was like "that's not going to end well"
Same! Lol 😂
I watch Thomas anymore knowing that I won't learn anything other than what not to do.
🤣🤣
Never take your meal as single shot of fun while putting it down with the help of the spoon!
Far better to spend some taste to the clothes as well to attract dogs and those associated with them ....
We all waiting for that glorious light and stunning moment!
Exactly what I came for. Mr. Heaton wetting himself. Shows, that you are a human as well ;-)
I think the 16:9 really gave the subject space to breath without the edges of the frame pulling focus away. Really good Tom!
Agreed. Thanks a lot.
Thomas Heaton is my spirit animal 😂
I loved the 16x9 format of the peak but the square format image I liked even better.
Really liked that last image .....so many different natural brown tones.
i love your enthusiasm to wake up in the morning to take photos...is so hard for me
wow 13.09 . that was crazy spectacular .
Don't ever change Thomas. Man that was funny.
I adore how frank and relatable your awkwardness around other people is. I'm the same exact way, it's the hardest part of getting out to shoot.
Spilling your soup down you leg was the best! 😂 then the story about the dog! 😂 😂
Great video, I just watched this morning, I'm catching up on videos that I missed while I was on my own road trip. You posted this is the day before I left for 10 days in Iceland solo living in a camper van. I did the entire ring road, to be honest it was too ambitious and I pushed hard to complete the trip in my time. However the isolation was exquisite and so worth it. I thought of you a your desire to be alone, while doing photography, while spending 4 hours on the beach photographing Vestrahorn there wasn't another person or car anywhere to be seen. Absolutely priceless and an emptiness that I'm sure will never be available again.
That 16 X 9 shot on the mountain with the Sun also touching down on each side of the main subject is one pretty shot, it is print big put up on your wall pretty.
I loved the last photo. I did an Army Exercise in the Brecon Beacons in the middle 1970's, (Yes I am that old). We went up Pen-y-Fan amongst other things. Thanks for bringing back happy memories.
i loved the last image, tranquil, layered with soft slightly desaturated colours. by the way the dinner fiasco was hilarious!
Burber is a great idea. Haircut was just perfect in that first videos). Nice videos with the van. Real adventure! Thank you
Well done Tom for getting a double page spread in the Royal Photographic Society journal. Well deserved.
Beautiful area, it takes real planning and discipline to chase the light morning and evening.
Now that's awesome shot 13:06 thank you for sharing simple but elegant.
9:17 The scenes are amazing!!!!!
Just wanted to say that I enjoyed this video a lot. I often complained these days that your videos felt less and less authentic - This one is here to prove me wrong. Loved how you really focussed on the images and how you explained your process, the results are all very beautiful and your whole attitude felt really layed back and honest. Really good job, looking forward to seeing more of your road trip.
The sunset you hiked for is lovely Thomas, and I also think the last image is a very nice bonus.
My old stomping ground, nice to see it again.
You got out, went on a journey and made the best of difficulties... That's sometimes just as good as the photo.
Wow, you look a lot better after coffee. You have all the cool kitchen gear. Glad I stuck around after the square space blurb.
Always good to keep your nads warm lol.
I loved that last shot. The van is cool.
Hope someday, somewhere in a beautiful location I'll catch Mr Thomas Heaton off-guard, talking to his beloved camera...🤭 nothing better... 😇
Beautiful foot path image., you just saying that I didn't know what to expect. Beautiful ! I'm glad you can get out there.
You deserve some accolades for hiking up that mountain TWICE!
That mountain looked beastly-- then adding a full pack on top of that.. I hope you celebrate that with a pint soon.
Love all the shots but that 16x9 was IT! Enjoying your trip!
Thank You, that was a nice journey!
Thanks Tom another brilliant adventure, thanks for sharing enjoyed it a lot,
its packed at sunrise.
"I don't like getting caught off guard by people. Nothing worse." Too much, Thomas! The more so given how warm and personable you are.
Welcome to our neck of the woods. Just along from Cribyn is the fourth of the Beacons (pronounced by the Welsh Van-e-beeg, pronounced by the English Fanny Big!). Great views and images to be had...come back soon
I have painful memories of having to run up and down that track to Pen-y-Fan during my army days. Rarely stopped to take in the view unfortunately but it's a lovely part of the world.
My son and I went up Pen y Fan in 2018. It was a lovely warm evening and the only snag was that we'd chosen "flying ants day" so we were constantly picking the things off our skin, haha! But it's beautiful up there when the evening light is good. I took phone photos of that very same subject, though from much closer up. Loved the 16x9! I also thought that final shot from the reservoir was nice - much better than it looked on the viewfinder. Thanks for continuing to entertain - the meal spillage was hilarious :)
Love your content and the fact that it is about the experience and not some “do these 10 secrets tricks” or gear video.
I love the Brecons and liked your square format sunset image of the Cribyn. For climbing Pen-y-Fan, the challenge is to climb up Jacob's ladder from the car park at Cym Gwdi in 55 mins carrying 16kgs 😉
Love that picture @ 13:00 Thomas, gorgeous.
wow, you got the perfect set of eyes. not many can see these compositions. absolutley stunning.
Narration, photo, and background score on point. Industry best.
Watched this while lying in bed with the missus. At the moment the Delica tackles the steep part, we simultaneously shouted “speeeeeed” at the TV in a Clarkson style. 😂
I have spent a lot of time in my youth camping all over the Beacons, still as beautiful now as it was in the early '80s.
Man, I love the sound of rain or hail. Thank you for the outside adventure for people stuck at home !
As always really enjoyed the video, my kinda day, not knowing and enjoying the places for what they are, glorious. All the shots had a very earthy feeling to them, although you wasn’t overly excited I loved the last shot. 👍
Great Vlog. We stopped at that reservoir last year for sunrise & caught snow on the peaks before parking up at Neuadd & walking up towards Cribyn. Was beautiful.
Pen y Fan!! Loved my sunrise walk up Pen y Fan, tough walk
Hi Thomas. Brilliant video. FYI there are loads of videos showing how to make an envelope from reflective insulating material that lets you seal your meal bag inside and you can then leave it while it continues to 'cook'. It's a bit of a Blue Peter challenge but having seen what you have done with your van I am sure a pair of scissors and some sticky tape will not present too much of a challenge. Looking forward to the Lake District footage.
Thomas - Classic!
Looks like you are really going to get some good use out of that van. Looking forward to the Lakes trip.
Ohhh so pretty nature
Those shots at 14:50 and before, when you got the light, were worth coming back for. It is great that your effort paid off. Nice images, Thomas.
Cracking photos!..certainly worth the effort...😘📸🌈
simply gorgeous ... adore the area ... wonderful job ... enjoy the moving pictures too!
Thoroughly enjoying this life on the road series - and all the van build episodes! Makes me miss my old VW that's for sure, though I don't miss the break downs!! So much has evolved in the world of custom interiors - I used to love going to Brighton Breeze yearly where you'd see miles of campers lined up and all kinds of creative custom jobs! CZcams has become that inspiration once again... a camper is surely in my future! Just not a 50 year old one!!!
Great photos as always, and great to live vicariously til I've saved for my own! Keep 'em coming, and stay safe and well.
My favourite subject's, photography and camper vans. Thanks for the food laugh and lovely photos. A great mid week pick me up.
South Wales is full of gems, you should have a look towards Pembrokeshire and Gower next time you're down that way!
As usual, another inspiring video.
you could use the bottle as bidet!
Nice video Thomas and thanks for the laugh buddy - the meal bag fail did make me chuckle! 🤣😂🤣
At 4:32 , that was hilarious! Great Video.
Love to see you using the 1:1 crop in camera to help your square framing. So cool!
Keeping it real leaving in the "meal catastrophe". Love it.
That last picture is a beaut
Glad you liked the last image. I wasn't sure at the time, but I like it now 👍
PENNY FAN? Oh Tom, I know you struggle with some pronunciations but Penny Fan? Let me help - Pen-uh Van.
The letter Y is a vowel pronounced a a soft U. A single F is V and (double) Ff is F.
Loved the video. Croeso y Cymru, Welcome to Wales.
Thanks saved me doing it
Ah--name the van contest! Let's call it Pen-uh-van. Or not. Whatever.
Who says landscape photography is easy, eh!
I did think this, but carried on regardless. I could make an entire video of all my mispronunciations 😂
Every time he said it I kept thinking "missed opportunity to make a pun about your van, Tom!" :D
Nice to watch your adventures. I’m here in Toronto, Canada and we’ve been in lockdown since last December 2020. In the midst of the 3rd wave. Can’t wait to explore beyond my neighborhood!
Really enjoying this road trip. Keep up the good work. 👍
A collab with Steve O’Nions would be so cool!
You're so right. Sunrise is so hard since there is no light or time to explore a new scene.
Now this is the video we all need, VAN, HIKING and some spill
The mis~hap with your meal was priceless! You handled it pretty well. Another great video, Thomas✌
Hail stone... we had baseball sized ice fall from the sky last night here in North Texas... I think you might mean Sleet ;-)
This time you've got my thumbs up just for the moment you opened your jacket: "...like i've throwed up on myself". i've done something similar in iceland in the highlands, when i spilled my food all over my sleeping pad. that was a mess. hope your crown jewels are safe.
Ah I love that you visited the Beacons. If you ever come back I highly recommend Pen Y Fan via Cwm Gwdi (north route). You get great views along the way and far less people, if any at all 👍. Enjoying the video
For sure, I will be back. You are my favourite channel for several years now!
Good to see that one of the Pro Photographers on my 'follow' list finally comes to my neck of the woods. Awesome, as always.
Another interesting, amusing and very impressive video Thomas! Your landscape photographs are always breathtaking. Pen Y Fan is an outstanding, scenic location and you did it justice. Keep up the great work! Alun
Phew! Thought someone had hacked me for a sec.!
@@alunwilliams5090 I did a double take when I first saw your comment! ‘Alun Williams replying to Alun Williams’, could become very confusing!!!
Spraying yourself was worth a "thumbs up" all by itself!
Lovely photo at the end.
Absolutely beautiful shots Sir Heaton. Great colours and fantastic depth. Keep up the amazing work mate. 👍👍👍👍
Your home to Somerset to Breacon Beacons to Lake District to Home again seems like high % of the time spent driving & sleeping to me. I always used to get tempted to do those sort of trips but I've learnt to resist them in the most part in recent years so I can spend more time at the places I want to see. Anyway, respect for showing the 'foodisaster'...I know how hot those meals are when they are 'cooking' but never tried using them as a heat pad - if I ever doo I better put it in another bag!!
Great video Thomas, really enjoying this series with mishaps included. Not to mention the great images. John Pouw NZ
The complete opposite of the conditions every time I go to the Brecon Beacons. Sorry, but I did laugh out loud when you spilt your dinner on your trousers. Great work with the photos and looking forward to the next part in the Lakes. :-)
Do you have a little elf you keep hidden, that helps with your camera placement to get all the angles you do when driving / walking? You must drive and walk twice as far to put the camera in place beforehand!! Great video, and stunning images. 👍
I love so much how you present amazing videos and chat to the camera with such a relaxed composure.... then turn into Raj Koothrappali from big bang around women, when anyone is around and your trying to film 😂😂😂😂 love the content buddy ❤
Great images Tom, I thought the last one was good even without the golden light. Looking forward to next week in the lake district
Nice to see you out shooting again
Thank you Thomas! We had to say good bye to our lovely dog Poppy recently and your scene to camera where your food pouch leaked is the first proper belly laugh I’ve had in a while 😔 video wise, great to see you still out and about again. Really like the sunset panorama shot, lovely pastel colours and composition.
I'm sorry to hear that, but glad to hear that you could have a chuckle at my food spillage. It's a shame I never captured the dog attacking my crotch 😂 That would have been gold.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto thanks again Thomas, yes sorry to laugh at your expense 😉 but you definitely missed a trick not getting the dog “attack” on film! 😂
Great spring adventure TH. Re Windermere..... We were there during our Europe& UK Holiday from Australia in October 2018. I had to get a haircut and went to a barber there....big mistake!, the worst haircut I have ever had, I now know the difference between a "HAIRDRESSER" & BARBER. ..........Barbers only know how to shave & do short back & sides. LOL!!!!! We may see a different style of hair on TH next week :)?
Old school Thomas Heaton, something I’ve missed in these videos! 👏🤙😎👊
Re Firepot foods; you want the Orzo Pasta Bolognese. It’s the business!
Not sure what you're on about but that last picture was probably the best of the video ngl.
10:48 - What a GREAT idea to put your hot food pouch in your coat while it cooks!
...
11:28 - What a TERRIBLE idea to put your hot food pouch in your coat while it cooks!
I so love that you included the "dinner mishap"! That's real life right there. For me it made this video so much more relatable. Oh and I should mention I've been watching your videos since the early days of your channel so you can bet I'll be back!
Nice to see a local shoot, pop in for a cuppa next time ! More than welcome.
What a great channel you've got tom , no aires n Grace's , just a normal parmo lad 👏👏👌( stocktonian me ) 👍
Enjoyed that Tom.. the food explosion was a banker to happen tho :-) loved the sunset image .. looked cold on the morning
