I think I've just about recovered from the long drive, hours of paddling and then attempting to sleep on a deflated airbed 😅. Utterly worth it to paddle on the loch for even just a short while on that morning of pure calm and tranquility. Beautiful documentation of the midge invested adventure 👍

Watching while sitting in my office (sans windows) eating lunch at my desk and wishing I had this type of life...then Thomas scolds himself for complaining in the past and I say "thank you" and the guy at the desk next to me says "what?" LOL, LOL, when your talking to a computer. Great video Thomas and never lose sight of the great life you have created for yourself. Take care
Hey Thomas, as a content creator on YT also, I dont understand why anyone would give you thumbs down here. Appreciative of the choreography, the logistics, the 'continuity' in here... This is probably your best VLOGS ever (IMHO). Very cinematic and the drone footage - simply 'sick' (that is a good thing). What a trip, what a place, what conditions... what a VLOG! The b-roll was exceptional Thomas and makes the viewer appreciate the work that goes into it. The images were fantastic too, although I will confess to the heart being in the mouth when you had 2 cameras out in the canoe with you.
Those aerial views of the kayak and the reflected clouds when you go out to escape the midges are incredibly beautiful. Unworldly. Love the serenity and expanse of Scotland.
When looking for a camp the rule of 6 P's applies. 1 look at a map, 2 use drone to recce possibles selected from map, 3 take bug repellent, citronella/peppermint based work well, a small 2oz pump spray would last a couple of days. Great dinner by the way.
I watch your videos religiously. By far, of all the photography videos I have ever watched, this was one of the best and most inspiring. Keep it up man!
First, glad you read the fine print on YT contract about square tree photos. Second, I'm sure there are a few people on full lockdown that would be happy to slap that face for you....;-). Yes, you do have a charmed life being able to do this and make a living, but I can only speak for myself to say that I'm very happy for you and that you are generous enough to share it with all of us in the ways you do. Keep up the good work, and as always, beautiful photos. Thanks.
I can already tell this is going to be a great video, I’m jealous I don’t have anyone that really shares my interest for photography as I’d love to go on trips like these - maybe one day!
Same here but sometimes solo trips really are the best since you can just live in the moment and do everything you want to and spend as much time as you want taking photos.
I absolutely salute your sir. I live in a tropical country and have many tiny islands/sea-scape opportunity but none of them made me want to go against all the mosquitoes and other bugs to capture. I do believe they will turn out epic giving decent lights but I just hate insects, humid forests and wet jungles/swamp. Those combined are recipe straight to my army PTSDs which reminded me the good life I have(need not to live the jungles every other week). The same goes to every other bird/wild life photographer out there. Your motivation are burning bright as stars.
What a great surprise! Kayaking and camping and amazing photography! This was one of your best adventures since I began watching your videos. Your encounter with midges made me cringe. On Monday I went to a local state park to take advantage of temporary pools of water that are the result of rare showers we've had here in the high desert since June. Everything was glorious. Lots of rare plant life and fields of grass like I've never seen before. I past this large pond heading for the top elevations and took a few shots and saved one of a dead tree for later when the sun would be in a better location. About 4 o'clock I head down to the lower level and change lenses to shoot the tree. As soon as I place my bag on the path, an army of fire ants gather and a swarm of mosquitos yell "Dinner!". I haven't experienced. I zipped up the bag and moved down the path to where I could still get the tree reflected in the water. The ants were gone but my blood sucking friends followed me. Being a true enthusiast and a former resident of Florida I stood my ground, took a few shots while slapping my arms and lived to tell my tale. Now it is Thursday and I still have a few bumps on my left arm to remind me to get those pictures edited for sharing.
You are so lucky with this life . Don't think too much about what others say/think do your thing. Sometimes the photos are better than other times, that's part of shooting. Your life is better than all day at the office ;).
I love the shots from today's video-- Nice change from the woodland videos-- The first morning shot of the reflected sky and mountain and yes trees was gorgeous-- great video
most daring to bring out a GFX while on a boat like that - most admirable - and the extra shots from the drone really boost the over all video just a lot of work done in this video.
This is one of your best videos, my ancestry is from Scotland, is comforting to see, not being able to travel abroad, it is so very beautiful to see such a stunning scenery video presentation of your photo work. Please do not pressure yourself, Thomas, it takes away from the labor of love, and as a professional, you have to deal with the elements, the midges can drive anyone crazy., every place has its own weird versions of bugs in nature. I am so very happy to have caught this video is very calm, wonderful you are in the moment and enjoying the experience! I recently purchased two used cameras, to have fun with. nothing special. I am going to have fun learning the basics again. Healthy Cheers Lads!!
Hey Thomas! Using the rocks to keep your pan above the Jetboil probably saved your stove. If the pan didn't snuff out the flame the plastic housing that surrounds the burner will melt. I work at REI in the states and we see it all the time. Jetboil does sell an attachment called a "Pot Support" that will raise your pan off the burner and keep everything safe! As always love your content and look forward to your next video.
Your paddle was upside down Thomas. But, what a great adventure with a just as great companion. Amazing serene 1st shot Thomas. Love, love, love the trees on the Island shot. And your lone tree is epic!!!!! Great vlog!
Watching you Macgyver your lamb, broccoli dinner over your jetboil, made me thing you should try again for a Bear Grylls style series. Absolutely killing it. One suggestion: get your camera off the Peak Design clip and into a Pelican Case. Place it in the cockpit between your feet. Quick access and waterproof. You where stressing me out with it in the open.
Love kayaking that offers the tranquility and the peaceful mind that drives you for a great shot. Well done! Love the shot and the aerial Vid. As always, great video! Hope to see more of your kayaking photography soon.
Thomas, great video. Thanks for turning us on to Simon Booth. He has been a new source of inspiration. Might need to get to know this new Simon as well.
Beautiful drone shots! Midges - in another midge country, I consulted with an apothecary/pharmacist for insect repellent. He had pure DEET in stock and we could specify the solution. He warned that at 50% the plastic arms of our sunglasses would melt from the stuff on our skin. I thought that was a bad idea. We accepted 35%. Britain has a few archaeological sites of houses built in the water on stakes, 10 or 15 meters from shore. That, with a bronze age fire (smoke) will have kept the midges at distance. And then Scotland has these tiny midges that are small enough to work their way through mosquito net. The canoe is definitely a very good way to enjoy that landscape.

I have a prototype of the Winsome pedal boat that I must get going again.
You came up in my suggested videos today and thought....what could go wrong with kayaking and photography in a video? It turns out, nothing. REALLY enjoyed the whole video, the adventure and the photography!
Wonderfull video. I paddle a lot and for me the best way to carry a camera is in a Pelican case. Very easy access, easier and also much more waterproof than a drybag. I also keep a few desiccant packs in anything that has camera gear in it. This really helps to keep the moisture problems at bay.
Another fun adventure. Excellent drone imagery. Anyone else wish we could get just a few minutes of Simon and Thomas together? Am I the only one? Two of my favorite photographers. I would love to “hang out” with you while talking shop, cooking, anything. Take five minutes next time to chat to each other about the place, Meg, cameras, or even the food. Thomas, awesome vlog. The drone footage of your red kayak on that calm water with the green trees is gorgeous. Also, those last 2 tree shots are really beautiful, you can mentally unwind just looking at them. Those pictures are definitely large print wall shots that you can stare at all day❤️.
The drone footage... wow! Scotland is stunning. Loved the second shot - the island trees. I'm jealous of the resolution you've got on the Fuji and the detail it captures. You need to get a pedalo like Simon, it looks a lot of fun and leaves your hands free for taking shots🙂
In Utah, the midge is called “no see’um” because you do not see them, and you just feel the bite. If you use Deet insect repellent, it keeps them off you. The weekly video is nice, and it is always very well done. Your philosophy, that a camera, will encourage a person to be out and photographing, and it will bring enjoyment and a sense of observing one’s surroundings. A life well lived!🙂🙂
