  • A 20-year-old Jon Faddis is the guest artist w the Peter Herbulzheimer Orch. that also features trumpeter Benny Bailey.
At this time (1973) Jon was still breaking onto the "scene" in NYC playing lead with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orch. as well as some studio session projects.
Jon was still developing his own style, though it's quite apparent even at this stage he was well on his way. The influences of Armstrong and Eldridge were not as prominent yet in his playing, here, he is a mixed bag of Dizzy Gillespie tossed with Snooky Young and Bill Chase. He was also still rooming in NYC with his best friend Lew Soloff who was out with Blood, Sweat & Tears then.

The sheer edge and brilliance and clean tonguing to the high notes is very nice. Then the piano passages after is so inspiring.
