Man,I grew up on Count Basie!!!My mom&dad were big Basie fans. When I was a kid,I used to sit in the living room with my dad listening to Count Basie records That's how I got into music .
I first saw Basie in-person on the concert stage in 1957, or maybe '58, at a college dance event-I was hooked! I can still see it in my memory. Basie kept the assembled waiting well past the scheduled time, and when he arrived at his piano he turned and said "folks, I was here all the time"….
Saludos.
By far my favourite Big Band. During the 70’s Sammy Nestico arranged/composed (check out Basie’s Pablo records) died on Jan 17th 2021, he was 97. With Neil Hefty and Ernie Wilkins the band’s best arrangers. Sammy clearly left his musical-mark on this fabulous band, imo and with a respectful Cheers!
THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE GROUPS IN THE MUSIC WORLD. THE DRUMMER IS AN EXCEPTIONAL PLAYER. HE ADDS SO MUCH TO THE MUSIC ON EVERY SONG THAT IS PLAYED. THE CLEAR NOTES FROM THE TRUMPET PLAYER ARE SO PURE. AND, OF COURSE, THE MASTER BAND LEADER, COUNT BASSIE, IS GREAT ON THE PIANO THE WAY HE SKIPS ACROSS THE KEYS LEAVING OUT NOTES AND STILL KEEPING WITH THE SONG. THANKS FOR ALL OF THE MUSIC MAKERS...SYLVIA!
A music which makes you as a gentleman open the door for ladies .... or as young teen makes you leave your seat for any elderly people in the bus ...( Respect 🙏🏾)
Stunning and timeless, this Basie age seemed to go on, but time was to catch up and end the greatness of a continuum of the finest big band playing. I can dream that Bach, or Beethoven or Bizet, or any of the greats would smile and approve of such masterly shading, power, unison, teamwork, virtuoso control, tone and taste. It's a joyous lesson.
I HAVE OFTENED WONDERED WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO CERTAIN MUSICIANS. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW "THE SKINNY" ON JOHN CLAYTON. I HOPE I CAN FIND HIS NEW GROUP ON CZcams. . . SYLVIA ! 1/28/2021
Harold Jones was the best, difficult to find video but its out there; check out Live at the Tropicana; as well as Sonny G and Sonny P; Butch was the only drummer to come close to Buddy Rich in my opinion
I certainly agree with this. I saw Butch live with Count several times and his drumming was both spot-on and breathtaking at the same time. He was the engine that made that band go. No subsequent drummer was ever able to come close, in my opinion.
Yes, Harold was a Force agree. Butch and Sonny Were kinda on par w/ Playin Styles. Both Great Musicians . The only thing Butch had in common w/ Buddy was their Teeth ..
Thanks for posting this! I saw Count Basie in concert in the States during this time period. My jazz band played a lot of Basie charts and I was so glad to see him along with Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Maynard, Woody... and others.I love that we have such excellent sound quality videos to watch on CZcams!
I had the pleasure of seeing this band in Chicago that same year-differences were Butch was gone and John Clayton were gone replaced by Duffy Jackson and Cleveland Eaton. This was a great Basie band still swingin hard and full of great soloists. WOW thanks for this video-brings back great memories!
This is what you can do with music if you stick with it as a lifestyle and don't try to short-cut with drugs. No one played so tight as Count Basie's Orchestra for so long. You can't do that on drugs or booze. These were professionals who loved what they did. Listening to that bass player, i learned something about music. You don't listen for a note, you "feel" for a sound. Look at that unmarked (unfretted) fingerboard. The master of that instrument learned to feel the sound, not just hear it. You are searching for a wave, not a note!
So many people go around these days LOOKING for stuff to complain about. And then there's this. Life could be sooooo much worse. Or as Sammy Nestico wrote it and The Count recorded it on the Basie - Straight Ahead album, It's Oh, So Nice....
I WOULD IMAGINE THAT THE SAXOPHONE THAT IS PLAYED IS VERY HEAVEY TO HOLD AND YET THE PLAYER DOES IT WITH SUCH EASE. "THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER YOU" IS PLAYED BY THE TRUMP PLAYER WITH SUCH STYLE, FAST AND ALL THOSE HIGH NOTES ALL ROLLING ALONG WITHOUT ANY EFFORT. THIS SHOWS A FABULOUS PLAYER. LOVE THAT DRUMMER!! . . .SYLVIA!
Whew.... that opening number scared me...it was a mess ...a hdgpodge of sound creating a "swing-less" noise. Then ... ahhhh... shiny stockings broke in and calmed my nerves.
At first I felt anger with those 16 thumbs down voters. However on reflection my anger has turned to pity. I truly feel that for anyone who votes negatively on something this good. You may not like it as much as others but to condemn it ------ shame on you.
Such beauty and perfection in music can only be overcome by God. Count Basie is also a great pianist with sublime touch. Only the deaf doesn´t appreciate... Part 3? Part 3? Part3??
basie80, I had a deaf guy working for me in my business and I walked in one morning and he had his headphones on and he was moving around. "JOHN! You can't hear." I said (he could read lips) and we both laughed. He could feel the vibrations. He was also one of the best employees I had in the 21 years that I operated my business.
Waarschijnlijk van de TV daar was die toen der tijd te zien. Vanwege het ontbreken van een video-recorder heb ik mij moeten behelpen met een opname op een een cassetteband, tot nu toe dan.
Great drummer but for me not the best, he did invigorate the band as such. But i would nominate Sonny Paine and mr Bellson. Indeed mr Basie’s favourite drummer was Louis Bellson. The band’s golden “Roulette- Years”, imo were from 58/59 till the early ‘60’s, and the “Pablo-Years” (with comp/arr. Sam Nestico’s input) from around ‘73 till mr Basie’s death in1884. Nevertheless the Basie-Bands, in what ever formation, was for me the best Jazz-band ever! Just Dig this absolute power-house band & Cheers!

Look at young John Clayton on bass, Afro and all. I never knew he was with Basie. He's one of my favorite bassists.
He also used to play with the Amsterdam Philharmonic orchestra .
Just awesome and unique! I wish I was born 50 years earlier...
Who is listening in 2020
During covid 19??
I'm relaxing, with my glass of wine🍷. Chilling with COUNT BASIE😘.
NICE 👍👌♥️♥️😄
LO♥️E THIS!!!

It's about swingin', not chillin', don't you think?
❤🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🌹Artie, you certainly knew who and what was the great music sound. Miss you, and the heavens must be swinging.

I have always loved Count Bassie's music.
Tempi passati ed insostituibili,un grazie ad CZcams per darci l'opportunità di "esserci"....in un certo modo🤗
What Basie accomplished was amazing.
Piano, bass & drums with Freddie on guitar is sublime.
The art of rhythm section playing - entertaining enough itself
Music which reaches across the generations because it’s top quality - up with the very best
bill basie was unreal toe tappin baby

Butch Miles and Freddie Green - legends!
After Monk,
The count is one of my favorite pianists the placement of chosen bring joy in this sad time
Yes, a fantastic concert ; but, who is the soloist on the fluegelhorn in the third tune ? His chorus is a genius piece !
What amazing talent evrywhere! Butch's execution is flawless. Savor while it lasts...
Always a massive fan of Buddy but think Butch a better band player and always looks like he's enjoying it so much.
Butch is up there with Buddy and Louis in my book.
😔
You have to like John Clayton's relaxed demeanor playing the opening. Well, I LIKED it.
いつも楽しみに聞いています。晩年間近のベイシーサウンドは完成されていて大いに満足しています。

Beautifully said
it really does not get any better than this. wow!
Thats John Clayton on the bass. That guy is truly amazing! He runs his own big band today, named the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.
Andreas Hoppe Thanks for educating me
I HAVE OFTENED WONDERED WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO CERTAIN MUSICIANS. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW "THE SKINNY" ON JOHN CLAYTON. I HOPE I CAN FIND HIS NEW GROUP ON CZcams. . . SYLVIA ! 1/28/2021
Tenor sax, Eric Dixon is still there, still underrated.
this is talent and intertaiment the best mixt....
The great Pauly Cohen at his very best!
Butch Miles. Best drummer Count Basie ever had. Sonny Payne and all.
Thanks for uploading. Can't wait for the other parts.
Butch Miles was just about the best drummer ANY big band leader ever had.
Harold Jones was the best, difficult to find video but its out there; check out Live at the Tropicana; as well as Sonny G and Sonny P; Butch was the only drummer to come close to Buddy Rich in my opinion

But what about Speedy? and Louis Bellson... and Gregg Field was no piddly diddler too...
Why isn't Pauly Cohen better known, absolutely fantastic world class trumpet player.

Maravilha!

Budahbaba THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT COMMENT 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾
Classically trained (and acknowledged) in John Clayton’s case
This concert recorded years AFTER electric groups like Cream, Hendrix, and even Weather Report. Still the masters, with timeless elegance
Fantastisch ! Dank je wel.
How could anyone not enjoy listening to this?
Whoa, didn't expect to see a young John Clayton in there!
Butch Miles too...I saw him with CBO on 52nd Street in Manhattan in 1975/76 at an out door festival, FREE! How about that?
HOT DAMN, MAMA! BASIE BASIE BASIE...
soapbxprod たた
Freddie Green, yes sir..!
I used to jam with 'Bucky' Adams, and Eric Dixon, here playing hs flute as well as tenor sax. Good memories, JohnHill
BRAVO! BRAVISSIMO!!!
So many people go around these days LOOKING for stuff to complain about.
And then there's this.
Life could be sooooo much worse.
Or as Sammy Nestico wrote it and The Count recorded it on the Basie - Straight Ahead album,
It's Oh, So Nice....
Maravilloso!!!

In music as in art, we use words like favorite, rather than best or better.
