Hopefully it's not too late to say, but thank you Calum. I'm 16 but came out last year to my extremely religious and homophobic family. It was so tough and I went through life just barely clinging onto my fake persona. You have no idea what you've done for me. Neither have I really come to terms with it either cause who would've thought a song could have so much power?!?? If only I could personally say thank you because really, thank you so much.

Omg I'm sobbing!! I came out to my daddy 2 days ago. And the rest of my family yesterday.. I was terrified. I was raised pentecostal. My daddy was a preacher. I just knew he was gonna disown me. My momma passed away. I never came out to her but I have a feeling she knew. She used to tell me that she loved how I loved people for their heart and no other reason mattered.. their gender race or religion id love them and she said I was an inspiration to her. I just felt like she approved and would always want me to be happy.. so with that in my mind and the fact that I'm now best friends with the man I was married to and have 2 kids with supports my life and will always have my back (about that marriage thing...at first i was trying to pretend to be straight. I failed tho cuz he knew ;) lol!! He loves me and is truly a blessing to me and our kids!! And he is 100% supportive) So fast forward to 2 days ago..i was terrified I was facing rejection, being disowned, and I was scared of being called every name in the book... I said Daddy let's talk. He said ok baby girl, about what? I said anything. He said ok you start. I said what about dem saints who dat!! He said yeah and you're gay. I said yeah I'm gay. Do you still love me? Do you accept me? Do you want me to disappear? He looked me right in my eyes and said these EXACT WORDS.. There's nothing in this world you could say to me that would make me stop loving you. There's nothing that would make me disappointed in you and I cannot live without my darling daughter. So to answer your questions I say yes yes and no. I started crying so hard and he asked me why was I crying. I said I thought you wouldn't love me anymore. He said you think so little of me. I'm so sorry I've ever made you feel like I'd stop loving you even for a second. I've let you down somewhere along the way if I've ever given that impression. Now come give me a hug and tell daddy about your life and how you felt growing up. I want to know it all.
So I did and I told him I had a girl friend and it's someone he knows. My home health nurse tga t he adores and already treats like his daughter. He goes oh woe!! You have to call her and get her over here so o can officially welcome her to the family. We ended our day over supper and then coffee and cigars and it was the 3rd best day of my life. Obviously my 2 first fave days are the birth of my children which my girlfriend was there for cuz she's been my best friend and home health nurse for 16 years. I'm 37 and I just came out to my family. And i couldn't be happier. Please don't live a lie. Take it from me. I feel so alive!! My children and my girlfriend and I love our lives and my childrens daddy and his girlfriend make up our crazy little happy family and it's lovely and happy and omg I wish this love on everyone!!

As a straight man listening to his story, he makes it feel as normal as anything else normal...whatever that means. Such a natural, amazing warm human being. So sorry he struggled with what seems so natural. This man really gets me. As a lifetime musician myself, i never find myself saying "he's my favorite". Well, he just did!

My daughter came out when she was 14. I honestly knew and waited for her to feel comfortable enough to tell me on her own. I told her I loved her and that I support her in life, no mater what. Her partner didn't have the same response from her parents. It breaks my heart. Although it isn't the same , she knows that she's welcome into our family. She's loved and respected. I have plenty of Mama hugs and "I love you"'s to give out!

I'm just like you! My first daughter was I think conflicted about talking about this. I told her, listen to me. I love you. I loved you since before you existed. I knew her in my soul. I said to her for who she has been, who she is now, and finally for the woman I know she'll become. I hope people see this, have some reassurance that they are worthy of being loved!!

From Callum's 1st audition on BGT in 2015 I just sensed he was a genuinely sincere and humble guy who also just happened to have a cracking good voice. I saw how devastated he was when his sister, who auditioned directly before him, was rejected but she stood at the side of the stage and wept with pride as he held the audience and judges enthralled. He's going to be around for a long time to come.

When I first watched his audition in BGT, I bawled my eyes out. Apart from how amazing his voice is, his use of the gendered nouns and pronouns in the song struck me (“Does she love you better than I can?” “I’m not the guy you’re taking home.”). The song told a different story than the original. It hit me hard ‘cause I went through a very similar thing where my ex-boyfriend left me to be with a woman. My thoughts during that time were reflected in the song so starkly, I was blindsided. Afterwards, I thought, “He must’ve just gone for the original lyrics and didn’t bother changing them.” but I got confused because of the “I’m not the guy...” part. Seeing this now, I’m even more of a fan. I’m in love with the soul of this man. Damn.
I also noticed this when the first time I heard his version in BGT. I thought that my English was not good enough and I listened the wrong way. I listened over times not because of this confusion but his voice, but just understand his song back to the day until I know this song: No matter what.

You got this. I came out as gay and that was not it. Long story. When I came out as trans my parents totally accepted me. The. Are many places to go even during this time. The online community has some awesome places, and yes some rough places, but you will find the right place.

Even as a 32-year old man I am petrified of doing this and of how my parents will react. You don't know how much I wish I could be free. That's why I watch this song everyday, to feel what it would be like to come out and having a loving response: "I love you no matter what, I just want you to be happy and always be who you were. She'd wrap her arms around me, saying 'Don't try to be what you're not', because I love you no matter what"... 😢

When i came out to my dad, he was like more disappointed than angry. He was really disappointed and he blamed himself for not be with me when im growing up coz im literally grew up with my grandparents. My dad cried a lot that night and hugged me tightly. He muttered thousands of sorry. I don't know what i am going to do coz it's really breaks my heart when i saw my dad crying for the very first time since we barely see each other. I just cried and told him that im still the same person, his son that he loved.
He accepted me though i saw in his eyes that it was really hurt. He wished my mom was with us that night (she passed away when i was 1 year old).
I also came out to my older brother whom i used to be my best buddy and best friend. He just smiled and hugged me just like what my dad did. He told me that nothings gonna change im still his baby brother and he will always be my hero.
I came out to my younger sister through phone. She was shocked as she didn't know what to say.
Until she paid me a visit (one week after i told her i am gay) She had this smile that melts my heart. She hugged me and first thing she asked me was what i am? Top or bottom. She giggled like a fangirl. But i didn't know what my position tho- so, got no answer.
Your family knows best. Your family is your first best friend and always be your friend. No matter who you are, they'll accept you though they also need time to sink on their mind those things.

Calum Scott I just discovered you a few weeks ago and instantly became a fan. I am gay and grew up in the 60's and 70's . I can't explain how difficult that was. I knew as early as age five or six that I was attracted to the same sex ( not even knowing what sex was ) but some how I knew that it was not accepted in society and kept it held inside. I was terrified thinking I was all alone and an outcast . This affected me emotionally deeply growing up and will admit it still affects me to this day. We the ( LGBTQ ) community have come along way since the 60's and 70's but we have so much further to go. Keep doing what you do, not only do you have a talented voice to sing, you have a strong voice in the "LGBTQ " community ....
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm straight. I do have friends who are not but I do appreciate their warm hearts and courage more than straight ones, honestly. Just be yourself, everyone on earth deserves all freedoms to love whoever you like 👍 😀

this song means so much to me. i heard this live the first time and i just started bawling. my mom doesn’t accept who i am and she was sitting right next to me while i was sobbing so intensely. the whole way through i just couldn’t stop the tears. i have never felt a song hit me harder than this one. she was looking at me with sadness in her eyes,, and i hope it was sadness for how she treats who i am instead of sadness for who i am.

As a Mom, this is how I feel about my two sons, as they have battled addiction. Always, forever, and no matter what, I love and support them. Sometimes that support has to be with solid boundaries, not enabling - love, always, for them.

I can personally relate to everything this song is about and how lonely my life was growing up knowing i was different to other boys and the mental trauma a teenager goes through trying to hide his secret from the world thinking i was the only gay boy on earth. It took me a very long time to tell my parents and thought they would disown me and kick me out. This is truly a beautiful song so thank you Calum very much you sweet man :-)

I remember when my mom learned that the friend I took home for a year was actually my boyfriend. The sad part is, my mom blame him for everything. He even said that it is my boyfriends fault that I have been involved in a homosexual relationship. I just keep my mouth shut and I regret it. My boyfriend and I have been separated after 3 years of relationship and I never enter any relationship again. It is not because I still love him romantically but because I wanted that the next time I fall inlove, I will fight for him no matter what. And I will make mom to accept that this time.
I hope calum Scott sees this. Calum im 55 years old and son i have to say, straight or gay, bent or crooked, you have got to be in my opinion one of the best singer song writers of your generation. This song, no matter what is beautiful b and i think will help so many young men and women who are gay and having trouble identifying with themselves and not knowing how to tell peopleb especially thier parents. I am not gay but if i had a son that was i would want him to be like you. And by the way, those friends that turned thier back on youb were never your friends and your better off not having them in your life.
