  • Diego Rivera’s treasured Pan American Unity mural is massive. Together, all 10 panels measure 22 feet high by 74 feet wide and weigh over 60,000 pounds. Moving it from City College of San Francisco to SFMOMA was a giant project that brought together a team of experts and took years of planning. In the spring of 2021, over several weekends in the middle of the night, the team carryout its precarious mission to move the monumental mural across the city. In this video, we explore the mural and the incredible journey to get it to a public space. (This video was sponsored by SFMOMA)

Thanks to San Franciscan Will Maynez the guardian and historian of the mural who has spent 20 years of his life protecting this masterpiece of Diego Rivera. And thanks to all whose partnership made it possible to bring the mural to SF MOMA for public view.

We are so fortunate to have had Roosevelt who made it possible for so much great art to be in our city. We not only have this great fresco, but there are great works in other venues as well. The main post office has a mural, Coit Tower has gorgeous murals, For years they were off limits because of their political content. Many public schools have murals, not all by Rivera, but other great artists as well.

My husband and I were at SFMOMA on Monday and had the awesome experience of Will Maynez talking with us about the mural. It's an incredible piece of art, and Will is an amazing steward and historian of the mural. We felt so lucky to have chanced upon Will. SFMOMA and the Roberts Family Gallery seem like the perfect home for this masterpiece. It would be wonderful if this could be its permanent home.

I had the pleasure at one point to act as a docent for the mural years ago. It was an amazing experience and Will was a big part of that as he really emphasized the storytelling aspect of the mural whilst also making sure that we didn't spread any misinformation; if things were hypothesized, we said that rather than presenting it as a 100% known fact, something that was necessary as there are so many stories as well as mysteries revolving around the mural. I hope to see it in its new contexts someday in the future though whenever I visit SF.

Seeing this mural has been on my to-do list for over a decade. Somehow, I've been unable to get myself out to CCSF during viewing hours. It was exciting to finally visit the mural in its temporary home. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting the Rivera exhibit on the 4th floor *before* seeing the mural. Having all of that context in mind made the experience much more meaningful. This piece is more than a stunning work of art. It represents the world view of a true visionary.

I’ve seen this mural since I was a kid that lived across the street from SF city college with little to no knowledge of what Diego Rivera was expressing. That unknown story turned into knowledge today when I pleasantly walked into Will’s presence who by chance was sitting in front of this profound mural. Thank you for sharing all the details I was unaware of. Yesenia Rivera

If you're having a pre-showing, I'll try to get up there sooner than later. One more thing, Willie. I suspect that the murals are not fully funded. I subscribed, but tell me how I can finacially support your gallery. I didn't see any method of financial support on the website.

Narrator...Diego Rivera's last name is pronounced RI-VE-RA...RI is strong I. You lady pronounce his I as a soft e.
So annoying to hear how you Rivera incorrectly.
