I think Vegeta explained that the original Super Saiyan destroyed himself due to his power being too uncontrollable.

@Anh Linh I believe with the First Super Saiyan, the 10x multiplier and rage from the loss of control when become a great ape was the catalyst, 2 requirements of the super saiyan transformation he could not reach without a full moon. without great ape he would not have the minimum power level nor the emotional state to achieve supersaiyan therefore could only reach that state when he was in his great ape form.
I believe Vegata only says the original Super Saiyan's power was while in "the transformed state." I don't think he specifically says it was the ape form. Granted, the the episode includes a cut away of Vegeta imagining the SS as an ape, but at the time the only known Saiyan transformation is the ape form. I always took it that the original Super Saiyan was a berserker type like Brolly or Kale who don't necessarily have or maintain control when they transform. Through the years, countless retelling of the story, the detail of a different transformation was lost. So when imagining the legend Vegeta just assumes it was an ape transformation.

Roshi's moment of sensing Goku's insane power up is super underrated. Him realizing that gokus potential struggle to maintain his morality is such a good plot point because since this is his first SSJ transformation triggered by intense emotion, he could turn megalomaniac and go on a rampage like Saiyans in ape form. And since it's thousand times more powerful, this was a point of no return if goku struggled to keep his sanity. Him snapping at Gohan shows this greatly. But it's confirmed immediately after in his speech that goku is just very pure at heart, even in his bursting rage he chooses to fight for the weak and the innocent.
You can tell he is struggling though. He wants to inflict pain on Frieza. I don't think there's ever been a time before that that Goku actually wanted to inflict pain on his opponent. Up until that point, Goku had managed to sway even his greatest and most powerful enemies. Tien, Piccolo, and even Vegeta a little bit. And he had been confident in his mercy, even with Piccolo who was supposedly a being of pure evil, that it would change his enemies. And he was right. But Frieza was something else entirely, and it was making Goku question his formerly rock solid belief in people, that they could be saved and turned away from evil.
Watching Frieza get his ass beat is one of the most satisfying things in anime history. Honestly, I always imagined Goku being far more violent after Vegeta described the ruthlessness of the Saiyans, and then Frieza describing the same. But there he stands (floats?). Goku. The Super Saiyan from Earth. One of the most powerful beings to ever exist in the Dragon Ball universe. And even though he struggles to hold on to who he is, he strives to put Frieza in his place once and for all.
Always gives me chills.
The ass whooping he got from Broly was even more satisfying
Watching Goku and Frieza never gets old. It's almost chilling to see how absent Goku's goofy nature is although it's completely understandable given how he lost both an adversary to whom he gave a second chance and his best friend 😞

@@jsmithers. No, that speech is horribe and doesn't fit Goku at all. The early Funimation dub pretty much ruined DBZ. Both Japanese version and Z Kai dub are much better. If you're going to watch something genuine, these versions are the way to go, not the Funimation Z dub.

Frieza definitely would not be Goku's first kill. In OG Dragon Ball, Goku killed most of the people he fought against, but for whatever reason, after Goku got married and had a kid, he stopped killing people, for the most part. It might have been the training with Kami, because he didn't kill Piccolo Jr either. If you watch the movies however, Goku kills damn near everybody.
That's true because even in this fight Goku never went 100% and also he never loves killing in DBZ so Frieza was technically Goku's first kill.
To be fair, the movies aren't exactly relevant since they don't actually exist as events that really happened. They are alternate universe "what if" scenarios that do not actually take place in the Dragonball/DBZ timeline of the show.

I remember that shit omg I had anxiety the second time around because I was hoping they wouldn't restart it again. As an adult I realize what happened though, dbz got insanely popular and they did us a favor by restarting it!!! I was disappointed but I honestly started watching it in the namekian saga. I missed the Saiyan saga completely!!! When they restarted it I recorded every episode on vhs!!!!
I personally think out of Super Saiyan levels, The first one looks the coolest. It's got the best hairstyle! Goku has 4 bangs in front of him while the rest is spiked up! I love it!

See what I mean? You have that speech that tells you that he's the Legendary Super Saiyan coming from Earth destinated to defeat Freeza and avenge his race and his friend, and on the other hand you have Super-Man Dragon Ball version, the symbole of justice who's bringing peace and is a superhero. Except that it totally contradict with his character, since as you know he let Freeza escape later at first, same with Vegeta. Maybe people see him as a hero, but not Goku himself. Goku is a good guy, but he's not a superhero.
I dislike the original subs or redubbing. I dislike the sound tracks that are not faulconner.
I prefer my original dubs where Goku is the hope of the universe. Goku is a hero a symbol that Frieza fears the most. I don't need to know his name or where he's from. And it's clear his new found power is from his rage.

Everyone complaining and whining about Goku's speech needs to realize that the speech was created just for the Funimation dub, and that this was 1999, back when the internet wasn't as widespread or popular as it is today and that this was our first taste of what anime truly was aside from the English dub of Yoroiden Samurai Troopers A.K.A. Ronin Warriors which aired in syndication 5 years prior to the original Toonami block on Cartoon Network.

I love this late to the party. It makes me feel so good to see new dragon ball fans. I was 9 years old watching Goku turn super Saiyan on cartoon network on toonami. I'm 33 years old now. When Frieza killed krillen and Goku snapped it made my eyes water.
To answer at Madison's question.... The first Super Saiyan's name was Yamoshi. He was only able to maintain his power in the transformed state. But it wasn't the apes unbridled nature that destroyed him.... He simply lost control of his power, he couldn't control it. One day his rage erupted and he was destroyed by his own power.
There's still a dilemma with Goku at the moment. He has the power but King Kai and master roshi is concerned that Goku's consumed by the power. He may not have lost control of it, but they're wondering if Goku is still there.... Hence the dramatic change in his personality.
As for power increase.... Goku right now has a 50x multiplier to his baseline. This sounds similar to the kaioken 20x technique. However what's significant that is the kaioken is multiplier technique of the "ki-energy" characters always use. (Not the baseline) This would normally cause a strain that could risk a over surge and destroy Goku's body.... HOWEVER, Super Saiyan is a legit transformation, meaning his body transforms, And because his BASELINE is multiplied, means there is zero risk and the only strain he gets is stamina output.... And that's very little.
So right now it makes kaioken and obsolete Apple computer in comparison.

I remember having to wait either a day or a whole week just to find out what was going to happen next when this originally aired on the original Toonami block on Cartoon Network back in 1999. Kyle Hebert, the voice of adult Gohan wasn't the narrator originally either. Brice Armstrong, the original voice actor for Captain Ginyu of the Ginyu Force originally did the narration.
Frieza: "Don't tell me, it's true isn't it?!"
Vegeta Somewhere: "You see Frieza, you're not dealing with the average saiyan warrior anymore."
Fun fact the hope of the universe speech is only in the english dub and kai it was never in the og japanese dub or the manga
Frieza does make a good point about Saiyans being not so different from him, sure you could say Frieza's worse than them and forced the Saiyans to work under him but at the end of the day, there are no good excuses for what the Saiyans. Blood was still on their hands and they took pleasure in doing their job. In DBS, Vegeta even states that the majority of Saiyans were evil even before meeting Frieza and all Frieza did was encourage their destructive nature.

I'll tell yha dragon ball kept me motivate for years and it will never get old even if people say they get bored of me when i talk about it or when they say what's my fave anime if i have to choose unless its top 5 or so in order. Also fun note everyone who took martial arts that i know of or hearing from others they all say they took classes cause of dragon ball z.

Let me help you guys when it comes to power lvl . Right now Goku is a super sayian and that means that his power went up by 500 percent of Goku's normal stage power - normal stage as in Goku before he transformed so yeah, he is damn strong XDD

Actually it went up by more than that. 500% is only a 5x multiplier. Super Saiyan 1 is 50x. For all intents and purposes though, his power is only 2.5x what it was before, because we know goku could use 20x kaioken, and Super Saiyan is only 2.5x stronger than that (the difference of course is that Super Saiyan doesn't tax his body like Kaioken does).

I love Roshi in this scene. The only one who has that Master’s sense about the repercussions of what just happened to Goku, even from a different Planet. He understood just how astronomical the change was, and everything that it could mean.
4:03 There were 2 reasons why Frieza was on the ground
1. He was truly in a lot of pain.
2. He was trying to use his leg strength to push Goku's arm up. When Frieza's feet indent the rock he is standing on, that shows just how hard Frieza was struggling. He was using everything he could think to try to escape SS Goku's vice-like grip.

Funny enough, Frieza and his parents took over the duties of the god of destruction while Beerus was resting. So he wasn't wrong to end civilizations. He just enjoyed it.
BTdubs, 11:00 Frieza was desperate. He was trying to toy with Goku mentally to play on his emotions. Get him to try and call off the slaughter by getting him to try and see his rage as likeness to Frieza's brutality by getting Goku to hesitate or create an opening that Frieza could take advantage of. His family has always been terrified of the super saiyan legend. It's why he tended to mock them so much, and tried to eradicate their race entirely. Now that one was right in front of him, he was doing everything he possibly could to try and escape his karmatic end.
I want to add some context of master Roshi conversation. I believe when Goku turned into a super Saiyan it may triggered some Saiyan traits like aggression and violent behavior and Goku is trying to remember who he is without being overtaken by his new form.
When I was a kid watching cartoon network. I would have to wait till the end of the following week to watch the latest episode.

The early Toonami days had, I think, 5 episodes a week. Until they caught up to the most recent episodes they'd dubbed in English, MAYBE 5 episodes. Then they'd restart the series from episode 1.

All though today's anime - including Dragon Ball Super is now made with animation software in order to fully utilize the 4K HD technology, there will never be anything like cell animation when it comes to this cartoon genre. Thought this when you mentioned the animation in this episode.

@@kobetayco3726 the kai version, it’s pretty much almost all the same voice actors but with more experience and the lines are more manga accurate. For example, Vegeta never blamed frieza for making him evil, instead he asks Goku to defeat frieza for him and the saiyans.
