Radar & Laser Detectors: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW! Audi R8

  • After working on Alex Roy's Record Breaking M5, I wanted to learn more about how Radar and Laser detectors work and if they are legal in my state. Likewise, I wanted to understand what laser shifters do and how they work before deciding if they were right for me. Here is what I uncovered during my research and while filming the step by step installation process at AI design. Please note: Obviously, I'm not a legal expert, but the information in the video is a combination of what I've read online and gathered through various manufacturer "questions" emails. I chose the Escort CI 360 complete detection system for the Audi R8, as it is the latest defense system made for vehicles today and is legal in my state. Hope you enjoy! -L

@@jasonlisonbee On the motorway in my country they still use a system that calculates your average speed over at distance, using nothing more than a couple of internal timers.
When you pass a given point, the operator in the car will press a button to start your timer, when the operator passes the point himself, he will press another button to start his timer. After a mile or so, he will again pick a spot and when you pass, stop your timer, and when he passes he stops his own timer.
The system can then calculate the time you took to travel that distance and an average mph is calculated.
This system will never be able to detect that :)

@@dannyteebone9233 Uninstalling that is going to be a major PITA. By the time you sell it the next best thing will probably be out and the work and time and money to move this system from one car to the next won't be worth it. With continually evolving cat and mouse technology like this, this kind of "investment" appears to be a fools venture. Plus do the math.... You would have to get a LOT of REALLY BIG fines and frequently for this to ever be a break even proposition since most large fines can be pled down to parking offenses and what not. I'd say the system is too old to be effective long before you'd rack up $10k worth of fines. Be better off just paying the occasional fine.

James G to tell you the truth this is my second one as I didn’t take the first one (same exact system) and regretted it when I had to pay another 10k Or thereabouts, I’m sure in other states one could find someone to do it for way less though. He did a real custom job where it looks factory installed and could be concealed and stuff, display was up high and control panel was on middle console for easy access; over 40 billable install hours. But I’d just take the main units, receiver, jammers, control, and not necessarily remove all the cabling if too much of a pain; at least saving me from buying a new unit altogether. I’ve had this unit since 2013 and it’s still top of the line; updates are done wirelessly on it too. I hate driving without it really. I know I’ll never recover my 20k in at this point, and I never thought It would actually save me anything close to cost, but I can’t imagine driving any other car without it now. Still works amazing, I love the 5-10 second heads up especially in oncoming traffic front side.

Well, basically the last sentence says it all. A lot of people are relying on waze or any other app for speed traps, even you have installed a very expensive detector to keep you on your guard. "On your guard" this is not about the speed anymore, it's pure about the money. If you find me speeding through a school zone and you catch me, fine by me. If I am going 5 above the speed at 2am in the morning on a road with no lighting and no cars right after a speed change. That's a rip off. I am certain that 95 percent of the detector sells are people tired of being ripped off at one point or another. Previous year I recieved six tickets. All of them taken in a speed change zone, where the speed went from 70 to 50. I always easy off the gas, as I don't slam the brakes and all my tickets show this. 59,53,55,58,.... and so on.

That list of states where laser jammers are illegal got that long because of individuals repeated driving past cops shooting laser and jamming them over and over again. Had they been responsible users they would have jammed until they slowed down, and then turned their jammers off giving the officers a speed reading. This is known in the countermeasures world as JTK or Jam to Kill. www.rdforum.org/content/jam-to-kill-jtk/
The officers would be none the wiser. I feel eventually jammers are going to be made illegal state by state, all because of the actions of a few irresponsible individuals.

Did you put a switch on the laser shifters so you can switch them off once you get back down to speed? Otherwise if a police officer gets no reading at all, it looks suspicious. But if you jam it for a couple seconds while you bring the speed down and then switch the shifters off, he gets a late reading but that could be seen as normal.

Here's a tip that will save you a costly install. Just run with a radar/laser detector and Waze on your phone. Never drive in the fast lane unless passing. And always slow down when coming up on a blind spot in the road, such as a curve etc. Laser is line of sight. That means they have to see you and your vehicle has to be close enough for you to see them. When I see anything parked along the road in the distance I just slow down. I'm doing the speed limit long before I get close enough to be hit with laser.

Super great video Larry... I have learned a lot from you over the past few years thank you for sharing your expert experience and knowledge in the detail word.
I work with present and former police officers in Connecticut from all agency including state troopers and from what I have learned by working and talking to them is that not being able to track your speed is a dead give away to them. And that you have some kind of blocker on your car, one of the guys here recommended to me is to reduce your speed then turn off the laser blocker and let the person track your now legal speed limit.
In case you didn't know and I hope this helps.
    God bless.

A truly clean and professional installation. I own a Escort Passport and actually read the terms and conditions. I was shocked to read that when you use the GPS and the app, the data including your speed is recorded. If you do get caught speeding the police officer or judge can request the unit and have record of everything you've done over whatever period of time Escorts systems choose to record it for. I do not use the GPS option.

I looked into these and a good radar detector mounted up front plus two laser jammers was about $2,500 not including installation. Larry has a radar unit front and rear with 2 jammers in the rear and 4 up front. Add an extremely professional install and I’m sure this job cost close to ten grand or more.

I wonder if he partners with them or works out a better deal because he is helping them gain exposure/eyes (advertising). His audience is big for sure, but I imagine Larry’s detailing business and products are bringing in a good income every month. Plus he’s a stock trader/investor by original trade so he knows how to get his money work for him. I would love to sit down with him and talk business strategy!

Hi Larry. I have had pretty good success with heads up displays in older cars after 2001 for keeping an eye on both road and speed of the car. Not a radar /laser detector but very easy to install via cable to obd port and I believe helps a lot in safety, awareness and driving comfort.

  • @Lgg42069

All the speed limit should be raised for cars and light trucks the current speed limits were designed for the safe operation of a 80000 lbs tractor trailer that takes 300 ft to break from 60 miles an hour and has very limited handling characteristics compared to a 3000 pound car, it's a complete scam that the police can charge you for doing 15 over what a 80000 lbs tractor trailer can do safely!!!

For a high end radar detector, laser jammer, and laser shifter. Plus having them 3D print a custom windshield mount along with installing it on an expensive car like his. I'm guessing about $1,500 in labor plus another $4,000-$4,500 for all the cost of the toys. So about a total of around $5,500-$6,000 for all of it. But he probably got a discount for sponsoring the shop and system tho

CT and VA were the last two states to ban radar detectors, but back around 1980(?) CT got sued and the US Supreme Court told them, that's illegal, only the FCC can regulate radios. So CT dropped their ban. And I've never understood how VA has managed to keep their ban--after the top court has said it is illegal. Any idea?

Isn’t there a off switch once you get hit by laser you slow down to the speed limit and then turn the laser jammer off that way the police will get a reading of you going the speed limit, not showing anything whatsoever wouldn’t that make the police suspicious🤔
