- element14.com/tbhs - Ben creates a project for Little Free Library, an organization that promotes literacy and the love of reading through free book exchanges. They’re looking for a way to log usage data from the small library units that are often placed in people’s yards. Ben devises a way to save data to an SD card which can be imported into a spreadsheet. He also uses his woodworking skills to design and build a Ben Heck styled mini-library.

Of course, what I notice is that the close-up of Ben's spreadsheet is using Office for Mac. Either Ben's running a hackintosh, or that full-screen was made using someone else's computer!
Oh, the trickery of editing.
Ever thought of doing the opposite of a portable? like turn a gameboy into a console?
Nay, a full four-player arcade cabinet!
There is a gameboy player for the gamecube which does that if you are interested, but I would still like a console meant for the gameboy.
I might since I have a few couple GBAs around
I want someone to turn a PSP into a console, or at least a laptop. There are a lot of PSP games that are exclusive to the system but playing on that tiny screen is just not so fun.
***** Yeah it's not *terrible* but it has some annoying problems like music issues due to the old ATRAC3 format used for PSP games. It's not anywhere close to where PSX or SNES emulation is though.
Defeats the beautiful simplicity of the little free library.
CSV means Comma separated values according to wikipedia... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma-separated_values
I feel this was a really in depth episode compared to some others, but thats just my opinion. Im glad to see all the detail in everything.
Cool project. An added feature for stormy weather would be to add a seal around the door to keep wind driven rain out. An inner lip and some weather stripping should do the trick.
Man there was a lot o abbreviations. Thanks for taking the time to say what they mean. Every little bit of information helps.
We have these all over Minneapolis. They're really cool.
Wow this must have been just posted, I just saw it over on the element14 site. :-) good video!!! I enjoyed it I learn something about the RTC clock. Hehe!! :-)
You had me at "Bagel Cooker!"
Maybe Ben should have added an LCD display and a HID device like a keyboard for having users write suggestions for the Library. ;)
or post a text message address so you can text the library. or maybe a vice message button mounted on the door that you can talk in too?
would need a solar panel then, and a rather large EEPROM chip, as the 1-2k in most AVRs probably won't cut it.
***** lol yes they can ask specifically which books they want then. hehehe
Watch your fingers men!! this Soft Hammers in Greece we say it "matsola". There is a different version of this hammer on full wood and different shape, the cylinder of this hammer is at 0 degrees from stick axes , the hammer we use is 90 degrees from the stick axes. Search "antique woodworking hammer"
. They usually use them for wood sculpture art.
Dealing with CSV files all day, it kept bugging me every time I heard Column Separated File. Should be Comma Separated File, since outside of a spreadsheet, the data is usually separated with commas. Just nitpicking on my part; still think this project is awesome. :D Great work!
thank you! just kept bugging me more and more
Love this little library!! Thor's brother is jealous FYI lol
Whats are those blue calbes Ben use at the back of his PCB? The tiny ones?
I'm wondering what happens if the door is opened and closed in such a way that the micro switch is only on for a very small amount of time, would the file be corrupted or is there something to ensure a minimum on time for the system??
Great show Ben.
Hey Ben! Ive been thinking on making a machine with an arduino that follows the sun during the day so it gets hit directly with rays(its gonna have a solar pannel). My proyect is to make my room solar. Hope you get some ideas!
You should make it a hardware standard for them. Like have a wifi connection on the logger to communicate with a site/app. A way to suggest books. A system to make sure you put in a book to take a book. Ect.
Whoops! CSV=Comma seperated values, TSV=Tab seperated values, just for the future! here's the wikipedia page! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delimiter-separated_values
It would be cool to see some projects with the PSone the small version or more arduino projects
Great video. BTW - "In a comma-separated values (CSV) file the data items are separated using commas as a delimiter, while in a tab-separated values (TSV) file, the data items are separated using tabs as a delimiter." - just fyi.
You rock Ben.
Ben should build his own 8 bit computer, like people did in the early 80's, based on the zilog z80 or something like that.
Dear Ben.
I would like it if you'd finish one project at the time. It greatly annoys me when you are jumping between projects. Thanks.
Btw Loki was after the "Tesseract" which was on earth, and this was the key to his quest for power, so whichever planet this happened to be on would have been his target.
How about RFID-tagging the books? Would an RFID reader mounted inside the wooden enclosure be able to tell when books were removed and log that?
(Of course whoever's operating the "library" would need to tag and catalog any new books left there...)
A barcode reader would do the job. With a nice wee sign saying " Please swipe books deposited or taken from the little library, thanks ". I don't see much point in just logging when the door is open.
That's awesome!
It should have a NIC card to send you the data.
My project is a wifi automailer. It looks for open wifi access points, sets up a temporary email, emails Ben repeatedly regarding his rock reference and then deletes the email.
could ad nfc tags to the books to see which book is popular
I dont get why he used a regulator and a buffer what benefit do you get from having the buffer as well?
Ben has a Hackint0sh laptop? If so that's awesome :D
Can u make a desktop computer cooler because mine over heat when it agents the wall
ya ! zx is next episode ! ! !
Here in Miami Florida was not have Little free Library lol...
Awesome project! Maybe even add a solar powered rechargeable battery pack?
12:26 Wear safety glasses young man! :)
Hey for your next project u should turn a old poketvision into a pocket tv by removing the antenna and replace it with a ant. Input for cable and satellite
Make a handy laser that has all the possible laser colors !
you obviously don't know how a laser works

The comment that I responded to seems to have been deleted

What! No Element14 catalogue in the library? Tsk,Tsk,
Dang I was really hoping for the zx spectrum part 3
should track what book too
In my area it would be take all leave none.
Why no barcode scanner?! Ben, it's 2014!
ISCP? You mean in-service cereal problemmer? Yes, that had no meaning at all. But if you can explain me what I've found out, let me know in the comments below, I'm really happy to see them.
Nice
>2014
>books
get with the times grandpas
people still use books, in fact there are still a lot of book publishers and all of that, we just rely on the internet too much

"no lag" lol wat; get a good device grandpa
"I always know exactly where I am on the page" again wat, what are bookmarks?
Everything shines a light to your face, the good thing is that you will have a brightness settings.
What the hell is easier than pressing a button or swipe the screen with a finger?
Tech is already a vital part of modern lives and you can't escape it unless you live in the wild; and it's not a bad thing at all.
Stop being so close minded and get with the times grandpas.
*****
"theres just something about holding a physical book that I like better than a kindle or a phone."
That's called being close minded grandpa.
It's just an item that you hold; There's no difference other than the weight maybe.
"I do read ebooks on my modded psp, more often than regular books"
good boy
*****
Being close minded is also making shitty excuses to not move on to more efficient modern ways of doing things.
It's also not liking change and sticking to outdated ways just because nostalgia or hipster ideologies.
Yeah, people share opinions on many backward ways of thinking; that's how religion still exists in the year 2014.
Luna
Bash people as close-minded, but can't accept people still like books.... yeah, open-minded my ass!
lol the squirell's book looks like it's holding a meat clever :D
why
no revition3
ben how to build a pc fan its too much hot in brazil help
1:00 intel galileo?
CSV = "COMMA Separated Values", not Column. :)
That converstaion felt awkward and uncomfortable. Ben should really just try and have a conversation with the guy. He looked so tense he could have snapped! The next frame at the desk he's cool as ice.
A great idea to share literature but check with your state laws before building. Areas where I live don't allow them because they go against local zoning laws. Stupid I know.
i read these comments and always see bickering and what Ben should hae done and added - when its a low budget thing and he leaves it for other people to think of and add ideas - i suppose he could just build the ultimate of everything, so nobody can afford all the bits and we wouldnt have to think of anything? lol
Comma-separated values.. comma!
All of these little free library projects suffer from the same defect in that they aren't really built to handle the weather that they will be exposed to.
Ben, CSV stands for Comma-separated values...
Is Ben working with Lovejoy now? lol
Please make a portable ps2
Why use finishing nails? They destroy the artwork, use tough as nails or waterproof epoxy for the trim work...
Ben, csv stands for comma separated values, not column separated values. Keep up the great shows!
All on one unit. Just add hammer
you should add a meat grinder for people who try to take a book without leaving one!
it will be nice energy for this project comes from solar panel :)
I hear blue man group is looking for a another member...
Yeah they need someone to replace Tobias
What the Ben Heck

I believe we lost the entire GOAL of neighbors dropping off a free book , an/or picking up a book … WTF
I laughed WAY too hard at the redundancy department of redundancy.... Wow... I need help
make a small vending machine!
How about a real air conditioner with refrigerant compressor and shit?
This doesn't seem like the Ben Heck show.
How this gets priority over the zx spectrum...? Kids should be checking out raspberry pi's, now that's an Idea.
new word 'parephrial'
It's like an ATM machine for books. (see what I did there?) :-p
Horrifying squirrel with a knife for cutting meat included! Call us now!
looks like a squirrel with a meat cleaver... scary! :)
Didn't understand a word he said.
"Column Separated Values"?! Do you mean "Comma Separated Values"?
This guy is really cool... But that acting XDXD
The realm of asgard.
