- HOW WE DRIVE- Different methods of steering, navigating and maneuvering the Celebrity Edge, a 130,818 gross ton, 306 meter, $1.2 billion dollar new luxury liner.
When we’re underway and I walk around the ship and guest's see the Captain, the question I get asked ALL. THE. TIME is “If you’re here, who is driving the ship”.
The answer is the Officer of the Watch. We have a minimum of 3 very qualified and licensed officers manning the bridge at ALL times. 3 separate teams rotate every 4 hours on and 8 hours off. The teams are made up of an Officer of the Watch, Assistant Officer of the Watch and a Quartermaster or Lookout.
The terms steering, navigating, maneuvering or just to keep it in layman’s terms, “driving” is used.
There are several different methods we use to “drive”. In this video I'll explain each one!
* Disclaimer: Video contains pre-pandemic footage, where facemasks and social distancing were not common practice. Oh, how times have changed.
Brilliant explanation Captain!
I am an experienced Master Mariner myself, and despite having been on and around the water for nearly 40 years, have never been able to explain all of these elements so succinctly!
Love the program for giving the Junior Officers 'Hands On' experience, something that was never afforded to me while working my way up.
And the Maneuvering Support Animal ! ! Fantastic, Well Done !

Captain Kate, awesome presentation. I am a licensed Pilot (airplanes) and I agree that you never forget your first, in our case a solo flight. I can only imagine the satisfaction it is to sussefuly maneuver a giant ship like the Edge.
Captain sexy ❤
Kate, we cruised with you in March 2019 as we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I saw you a couple times on board engaged with your staff and wanted to take a picture with you. I didn't get the chance as I didn't want to be a disruption in your busy day. We enjoyed the cruise and Celebrity cruise line hospitality from your staff! Thanks!
@Dave That was a year before the virus came to the USA. What's your point?
@Richard Reynolds Negative or in this case, ignorant comments do not bother me at all. Thanks
@Dave hey! The virus start at oct 2019 in china before it becomes a pandemic.

First no good Captain runs merchant or other shipping alone.
Aka good captain does he or she can her staff but especially his or her engineering and maintenance staff.
While don't know cruise becoming like many modern airplanes completely fly by wire. But old days airplanes control surfaces connect control devices be petals or levers. But I would assume should modern control systems failure completely there either means maintaining use called station until tug etc could assist or until ships control devices are restored.
As with new standard that all ocean cruise ships two independent means powering back to shore I have assume means independent control systems but miracle on Hudson there always first for every disaster. Though wish fellow Marriner ill will is not advised as planet has mind and means return the favor to sometimes many times over.
I absolutely LOVE this video!! Although completely unrelated, I spent 8 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Navigator. Many years ago I received a "VIP" bridge tour of one of your amazing ships in Fort Lauderdale. It was absolutely incredible!!! Thank you for sharing.
Captain McCue, you have my utmost respect and admiration. We sailed onboard the Edge during the last week of January 2020. Your ship and crew delivered a wonderful experience for us just before the world travel industry came face to face with Covid 19. My wife and I have been Celebrity Cruise guests many times over the last 23 years since our 25th anniversary cruise to Alaska. We hope to see you again very soon.
That was phenomenal! I especially like how you have that "Hands-on" approach to leadership by ensuring that all Junior Officers are fully trained and capable to assume their own Command one day.
"mates" not "junior officers" They are trained to be in charge of a watch....from the third mate on up.
@@researchcapt yep they’re already licensed Officer of the Navigational Watch

Love the video, captain! Celebrity’s officers are incredible. I love how many technological parallels there are with my field of aviation.
To be coming up in the ranks under your leadership would be a real privilege. The way you support your staff and give them opportunities to grow their skills is amazing 😊
We love a good Captain ❤ Slaaaaaaaaay
Or mc Donalds wasn't hireing idk...
I was on the Queen Mary in the late 70's as a waiter for one day. It was an incredible experience just to be on that huge ship for a few hours. Now, to see Captain Kate and the great job she and her team do, wow!!! Respect for the profesionalism all of you display!!! And... I envy you!
She is a true pro. Thanks for the great explinations and sneek peaks at how these massive vessels are operated! Getting to see the controls up close is really neat for sure!
Thanks Captain Kate, we'll be one of your passengers next year. Cruised Celebrity many times so I know a bit about the ships but love this Captain's view on things. All that work to keep us safe and happy is very much appreciated.
This is such a great idea to open up the ships functions to the sailing public. I have personally
Sailed with Captain Kate 3 times and she is the best master of the ship I have encountered on my many cruises. I haven’t met Bug yet but I hope to soon.
Please help me plzz my mother health paoblem madam Garu All billion dollars please help 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My forte is airliners, but it's so fascinating to learn how these behemoths are controlled!
When your favorite captain makes a CZcams channel🤩 Love from Mass Maritime!
Thank you so much Captain Kate for starting this CZcams channel. It is giving all of us diehard cruise fans an inside look at things we always wondered about. You are simply the best!
What a great video!! It's so excellent that you actively ensure that junior officers get their chance to maneuver the ship, since as you say, it's the most "fun" and absorbing and critical thing you so as senior ships staff. That's so excellent!!
I look forward to watching more excellent vids about ships equipment and ops now also!! Thanks so much for this! Nicely Done!
Captain Kate, Very cool, thank you for making this video of how you “Drive” the ship! Very interesting! Ken
You are a pro. I've worked on princess ships in 6:37 the gift shops many years ago and so enjoying these updates. I so look up to you, Captain, and love your kittycat.
FASCINATING!!!! As a BIG "behind the scenes" guy, this stuff is so fun to learn about...and you make it sound so easy!!!!
Im so amazed everything we've been taught at school were explained very concise and clear here😍😍😍. Ughh i wish you could be my prof for deck watch keeping ❤️❤️❤️. I hope you'll notice me Captain Kate. I love you and you're my inspiration 😘😘

What a great video Captain Kate. I learned a lot and I know the Junior Officers appreciate you also. Sea you in 2022. Gratie mille.
NO paper charts! So much easier to update electronic, but wow - I wonder who can still plot a DR line! So much more sophisticated now. Love the shot of Memory Rock! Destinations for several of my first crossings. Your TikTok has been great for showing people just how much work is going on while you are anchored by Little Stirrup. Kisses to the "MSA" companion.

Clear and concise. Thanks, Captain Kate. I find myself periodically binge watching your videos. Always informative while entertaining. I continue to stand in awe of your work. You are a model to every one of professionalism and commitment. When I say everyone, I mean everyone. The skills you have honed over the years is daunting. I think we are quickly approaching the mark in time when gender shock can be released to stories in history books. Competency doesn't seek gender. Professionalism doesn't ask for anything other than knowledge, skills, and commitment cloaked in integrity. I look forward to someday catching a ride with you.

Such a awesome video. I'm going to be going on a cruise for the first time in two weeks (Anthem of the Seas) and I love learning about the behind the scenes in whatever I'm a part of. I always wondered how in the world these massive ships get docked and seeing how the team does it all here is very impressive.
I'm a pilot and people say what I do is difficult. After watching this you guys make what I do look like a piece of cake! This is on a whole 'nother level!
Great video showing your bridge and team! As a Tanker Master a lot is similar but also very different! So great that you give all your team opportunity to manoeuvre the ship, as a Jnr Officer I was blessed to sail with Masters who gave me the opportunity and I also like to give this opportunity to my jnr officers too!
Thanks so much Captain. I learned something new today! Happy Sailin'
You’re soooo smart in what you do. Thank you for educating us and caring doe all those that cruise with you and work with you.
Those azimuth thrusters! So cool. I’m fascinated by shit like that. Propellers, ramjets, pump-jets, tunnel thrusters, rim-driven thrusters-from small retractable bow thrusters on a sailboat to the monstrous Azipods on your luxury liner. Fantastic.
Great video! Those pods' used on all kinds if ships now a day's must be the best thing since sliced bread for the captions. I also admire how everyone gets to share the duty's like that. If everyone knows what's going on and what it takes, it makes it easier on everyone to act as a team.
This is truly amazing stuff thank you for this and your hard work glad u popped in my feed !
Fantastic video Captain. Very detailed and informative. I do love a bridge tour when we go cruising if we get the opportunity. Looking forward to more.
This was outstanding Captain. Thank you.
thank you for your comment I really appreciate.
Great video, Captain! I'm going to send this to all my family and friends that are constantly asking for an inside look at a cruise ship.
Oh my gosh! Captain Kate, this was a fascinating video. I never realized there are so many ways to maneuver a giant ship. Thank you for sharing your amazing knowledge. Please give bugs naked special thanks for overseeing the production of the video. Awesome job.😉😁👍👍
I just started watching these videos and it is awesome. Well I guess you hooked me Line & Sinker. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of all these videos. Keep your spirits High because I just don't have the sea legs for it
I enjoyed the ship tour, especially the bridge visit, on Celebrity Summit back in 2018. Lots of what I saw in your video matched up with my visit, Anyway, as soon as I saw the images starting this video, I realized I was probably looking at a Celebrity ship. And indeed I was. Thank you for an excellent look at the process. I'll be looking for some of you other videos.
The technology behind the DP system is remarkable. Another great video - thank you for giving us these unique insights

Captain, You are such an inspiration.
Respected Captain Kate, very nice to listen new generation ships manoeuvres, May God bless all seafarers, Ours were manual day and hard ship days evolved with experience new generation. Thank you Captain
Congrats!!! Spent years working with British and Norwegian captains at Princess and Seabourn...nice to understand a Captain for once...lol.
That’s cool that so many people get to maneuver the ship.
thanks for your comment I really appreciate it.
Very interesting, Captain! Specially such small controls, for such a huge ship! Now I know how the Enterprise can function without large controls....all to do with miles of cables, and computer systems....all electronics 😊😊
Thanks for a great video. You do an excellent job & make the cruise industry proud. 👍😀
I love the details and that you delegate to the rest of your staff so that they can get the experience. Very nice
Insightfull series capt. Kate! Thx!
You easily jumped into the top 3 vloggers on my list ( including eSysman and Aquaholic)

Greatness! Thanks Captain Kate and team. 🤙🏻
We had the privilege of cruising with you on the Summit years ago, and I must say we've never looked forward to the Captain's daily briefings as much as we've enjoyed yours.

Wow, my first time having a look at your channel and it incredibly interesting!
I know how to fly planes but I was completely unwaware of all this! Didn’t expect all the automation either.
Keep it up Captain!
Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing! Hello from the UK btw
Wow how interesting is this, i love it 👍👍 continue the good work Captain Kate 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much, Captain.
Very interesting Captain Kate I worked for carnival cruises for 14 years and never had the opportunity to go the the bridge 🌉 you looked like you would of been a respectful but yet a fun Captain 👩✈️ to work with. I’ve very happy that women are taking up the job. You must miss sailing ⛵️ COVID 19 messed with everything anyway looking forward to see the rest of your videos.
Thanks for your very informative session.
Such a cool video! Thank you Capitan!
What a great video explaining the 'driving' of the ship.
Very interesting to know about the procedures on the bridge, the technology involved is quite simply mind blowing, so clever, as are the crew who use these systems. Thank you for giving us a little insight, very enjoyable to watch.

A very cool channel. I worked as a dive contractor for years, with Seahorse Diving, and always enjoyed seeing 'behind the scenes' on the ships. My most lasting memory of Celebrity ships, was your awesome security staff. Those Israeli commando types were always fun to work with.
Thank so much for these videos. I hope to cruise on your ship someday.
Hey I see me! I’ll never forget my first maneuver of our Grand Cayman🎉
I am curious during docking u the captain use joystick on dp or manuals...like azipods with thrusters
Awesome
Thanks Captain Kate. Love the ship’s kitty.

Love this video, very well done. And the cat it's so lovely :)
That was so well done and efficiently. Kudos!
A lot of good information here. Thank you!
I love boating and being raised on Long Island gave my the opportunity to spend a lot of time on the water. My dads love of sailing afforded us many wonderful days sailing on and around LI. My dad actually built a sail boat in our basement and as it grew it went out to the garage. I happen to be partial to speed boats as opposed to sailboats but being out on the water is my happy place so I’ll get it any way that I can. Bisous my friends.
thank you very much for your kind word I really appreciate.
