Humble man. That’s what you want in a Captain. No bravado, no big ego, just rock_steady. Thanks for the tour, Joe. Long time subscriber and watcher. Keep up the great work!
From my experience in the Navy, most skippers are like this. The ones that can't keep their egos in check get relieved pretty quick and you really only see that attitude with the junior officers.
Hi Joe, Please thank Captain Davis for allowing us to visit him in his quarters. He seems to be a down-to-earth guy. I imagine that the crew loves and respects him. Also, I wanted to let you know that your vlogs are great! I've watched every one and always checking for new ones. I have one question though...I understand that it's possible for a freighter to carry up to 12 paying passengers. Have you ever been on a freighter that has had paying passengers on board? If so, what does the crew think of that concept? I would love to do that sometime and I promise that I wouldn't get in the way.😊
Dude! Recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching ever since.I was a commercial fisherman up and down the west coast for a number of years but never seriously considered joining the Merchant Marine. While Im never one to have regrets,I wish I was younger(56 now)Id jump out and do the journey tomarrow.Thank you for sharing-The ocean is a wonderful place to work!
Not sure if there are other obligations in life that would stop you now, but Piney Point has recently had people in their 50’s come through. Age is not a barrier in there as long as you have decent physical (and mental) health.
Nicely done Joe, getting the 'Old Man' to agree to this is no mean feat ! FYI for your viewers, there IS a reason the recliner is where it is. The Master can easily glance out the window to gauge the weather, how the seas are running (especially when she starts 'working' in heavy weather), and of course, a clear view looking forward and to starboard (most of the arc of the 'Green' sidelight).
Very gracious captain….i cud see the crew respecting this man…🤙🏻noticed shirt and placard on wall ..Crowley Maritime…used to work in their …documentation/bookings dept ..in late 80’s…long ago.
This video came up out of nowhere and was well worth the view. Back in 2002 I had the opportunity to tour an FSO while in dry dock for refurbishment in Vietnam that had been earlier converted from a Russian super tanker built in the 1970s. The most interesting part of the tour was the bridge still in its original configuration and the crew living quarters which while not so spacious or modern seemed rather cozy. Thank you for posting this and to the captain for his hospitality.
2007 was the first full year I worked for CMA as the exec sec to the Provost. I have so much respect for the students who graduate. Thank you for this glimpse.
Thanks, Joe. I am SO thankful there are people like you, the Captains and Crews to move people and stuff around our beautiful planet. You are a fabulous story teller, too; part of being a true seafarer, I suppose. 😊
You have a great advantage in your videos that others don't. A voice that puts me to sleep, being a pathetic insomnia person you and Mike Rowe can do it. But I just go back and finish watching. Very interesting to see how others live.😮
@@PamelaTaylor-ll8gg exactly... very soothing to listen to. I was shocked to learn Mike Rowe was a trained opera singer. I've heard him but guess it makes sense. Enjoy your day 😌

Spent 6 years in the USCG some of which was spent doing boardings in LA/LB Harbor. Been to many a Master's Quarters. Yup, that's about what it looks like depending upon the age of the vessel. And good to see a fellow Texan as Captain!!
A neat little feature of that bookshelf that wasn't mentioned are the little metal brackets that you can see attached at the vertical midpoints of each shelf, presumably you can attach straps across them to prevent the books from flying out when the ship is rocking hard in stormy weather.
i love this down to earth no big ego Captain, i was stationed aboard one Coast Guard Cutter where the Captain was like this . the first time you saw him each day we would salute him and that was it for the day. he did not stand on formality . thanks for letting us see your living quarters sir.
Thanks for the tour. Saw plenty of these types of ships at sea from the signal bridges of US Navy ships back in the 80's. First time seeing the inside of one. Cool ship, cool Captain!!!
He went to maritime college. They specialize in officer preparation just like the military academy’s. You start out as a 3rd officer on the deck or engineering depts and work your way up with sea time and additional training required by the position and type of ship. There is huge opportunity in US maritime currently. There 4-5 yr maritime schools like California Maritime and Kings Point are fast tracks to very high paying careers.
@@Sushi2735 These day's lots of Asian crew and officers, incl. captains, are manning shipping worldwide. Wages are a lot cheaper and skills can be learnt.
You know Joe, When I was young - just coming out of school - I never considered ship working as a life, and I wish I could go back in time and follow that career. So many youngsters today are leaving home and racking up a bunch of debt keeping themselves clothed, fed and a roof over their head. I still feel the effects of that 20 years later. Seeing the captains quarters, and you've shared your accommodations before, I think that is completely adequate, and comfortable enough for anyone, and if I had such accommodations as a young man I would have been completely happy to keep my money in my pocket and live on board. I suppose the trick is to live frugally when on land as well - your idea of an RV is such an adventurous outlook. Good job, mate!
A very gracious Captain, please thank him on your viewers behalf.
