    "hating lars"
    this episode is actually the biggest insight into the lars saidy dynamic, consider what took place in this episode, but flip the sexs.
    a part time girl is trapped on an island by her boss. the boss is constantly trying to "win her affection" and she keeps pulling away. until she is practically "Stockholmed" into a relationship with him (being devoid of food, housing, and bed), and we are suppose to feel sorry for the boss?
    lars is the victim here.

    "Sadie, you're too good for him" in the ONE EPISODE where that's not true is peak irony.
    Don't get me wrong, Lars is an insufferable jerk and really should let Sadie help him become better, but that doesn't even come close to justifying the messed-up reverse-Taming of the Shrew manipulation that Sadie pulls on him here. Or straight-up physically assaulting him when he calls her out on it.
    The fact that Sadie still comes across as a good person in future episodes, and even to an extent in this one, speaks VOLUMES about the show's amazing ability to portray nuanced, emotionally-realistic characters and relationships. (Even if I wish they'd condemned her actions a bit more explicitly in this specific case.)
    I really like what you said about how a person's actions can be irredeemable, but the person themself can still be redeemed. That theme is one of my favorite things about Steven Universe.

    It's interesting he went on a rant about how much he hates Lars when i feel like this episode is the one that really showed how awful Sadie can be to him too. Lars was mostly just being kinda rude this episode, while Sadie's idea of helping him was trapping him in a scary and unfamiliar situation for days.

      @@jbonceu2457 no, i was just saying he didn't actually do anything wrong *this episode*. He was just being rude. There have been other times he actually has been awful, like when he faked an injury to blow off work and took advantage of Sadie's sympathy. But what Sadie did this episode was fucked up, whatever her intentions! It was really manipulative and self centered of her - yeah she says she's trying to help, but she didn't even consider that he could be genuinely scared thinking that they were actually trapped.

      For the record, i'm not even a Lars fan or anything, i think his arc later in the series is interesting but for the most part i just found him annoying. And yes i agree that most of the time he's the worst one in this relationship. But like, this is the one episode he was absolutely the victim lol. Sadie gets more slack because she's been pretty reasonable up until this episode while Lars has been a jerk every episode until now. So, yes, Lars doesn't do much wrong this episode but most viewers are already sick of his attitude so they're already ready to write him off.

    Later in the series, you meet Sadie’s mother. The way Sadie’s mother interacts with her explains her behavior in this episode. I don’t think Sadie was trying to be emotionally coercive, she just responded to the situation rashly and pulled a ‘I know what’s best for you!’ This makes sense as we learn about her past and the relationship she had with the primary caregiver in her life.

    It felt like back in the early days of the show a lot of fans were not understanding the toxic relationship aspect of Lars and Sadie and I'm glad that the show really gave us enough glimpses to allow the viewers to see that sometimes people just aren't good for each other, no matter how much personal growth anyone has. I think overall, Alec is gonna be very happy with the way Sadie and Lars are handled. More so if you two get around to watching Future, because it also shows how Steven deals with the ending of their character arcs.

  • @SpeedyOwl
    @SpeedyOwl Před rokem +10

    I liked the discussion about redemption. The creator of Steven universe is Jewish and within that religion there's a belief that anyone can be redeemed so long as you acknowledge that you've done wrong, regret your actions, and actively work to do better and not repeat those wrong doings in future. I didn't find out about that until after the show had finished but its a big message as part of the story overall. Alongside things like acceptance and unity. Just having a kids show created by a queer Jewish nonbinary woman, you can see in the show, in the lessons, the characters, their relationships, a female heavy cast and how gender is different for gems than humans. It's all just *gestures broadly* really cool.

    I dislike how the island episode kind of ends with it feeling like Lars was in the wrong when he was the victim and Saidy was absolutely a terrible person in this one. Lars is flawed, but he never did anything close to kidnapping someone for days and taking advantage of their breakdown to gain their affection.

  • @philippschmidt80
    @philippschmidt80 Před rokem +75

    I get not liking Lars but Sadie is worse in some ways. She's nicer to Steven and because the story is told from Steven's perspective that makes her look better to us but this episode really showed how manipulative and abusive she can be when it comes to Lars. She wants him and to get him she traps him on an island, cuts him off from his family and friends, watches him get scared and desperate and uses his vulnerability to her advantage. That is very rapey behavior and it's sometimes overlooked because Sadie is generally more likable than Lars.

      you are PARTIALLY right, lars actions with sadie can be classified as "being childish".
      guess what, lars is a kid (18, at best, although I suspect 16). and an adult boss, would have fired him, but sadie wants to have control over him, so she keeps him around, as her subordinate. Now some places say sadie is 18 (I suspect at least 20, but regardless; she is the boss, and there for, should act in a more adult manner).
      Yea, they are bad for each other, but between the two of them, lars is acting like a kid, and sadie is acting like a rapist.

  • @itsaUSBline
    @itsaUSBline Před rokem +13

    Can't wait for you guys to get further. Lars has maybe one of the best arcs in the show imo. Also, Sadie is lowkey incredibly manipulative in this episode. I mean sure, Lars has an attitude problem, but her actions here are basically objectively worse than anything he's ever done. Lars may be a jerk but he's not manipulative. To be clear, I don't dislike Sadie at all, I'm just saying let's be fair. She has no moral ground to stand on here, and even her saving Lars is hollow because she's the reason they're in the situation in the first place. I don't disagree that Sadie deserves better than Lars, but you could say the same of the inverse.
    It's going to be really interesting going forward. Since this definitely isn't the last time the show confronts and discusses toxic relationship dynamics.

  • @Itziwitzi_B

    I get Alec point, when I was watching Steven Universe for the first time I really hated Lars and I dreaded any episode focused on Lars and Sadie relationship.
    But after the end of the show and seeing all of Lars and Sadie character arcs my opinion on Lars gave a 180 twist, I became very fond of him even in this early episodes whe he's a jerk, I actually came to apreciate this episodes for the first time while rewatching them because it's important to show how toxic is the relationship of Lars and Sadie.
    None of them are dowright evil people, theyre just young and deal with a lot of complicated emotions that makes them do stupid choices, sometimes people can care for each other and at the same time be very bad for each other.
    Its an important thing to teach how unhealthy this kind of relationships are but its also a complicated theme and I think the show takes the right approach with this two.

  • @ArtoriasB

    For the most part I do love Sadie, but she is in no way better than Lars. For the most part Lars is just a rude teenage boy. Like I get that he's not likable, he's a bit of an ass. But Sadie straight up manipulated him and Steven, got them trapped on an isolated island, and basically took advantage of the fact that Lars was terrified of never going home to essentially come on to him. That is... not okay.

    • @isaacroot5459
      @isaacroot5459 Před rokem +3

      I don’t think this is a correct interpretation. In all romantic scenes shown, Lars initiated. Sadie never came on to him. This episode is mostly lighthearted. What I believe the artists wanted us to understand about Sadie is she has a penchant for controlling behaviors that are well-intentioned, similar to her own mother. She was correct; Lars benefited from her decision and he enjoyed his time on gthe island a lot, time he would not have spent had she not deceived him.

    • @creepfactors
      @creepfactors Před rokem +5

      @@isaacroot5459 I know I'm late to the party but no offense it's still gross? I've never liked this episode because of how easy Sadie is let off and how the fans just can never respect that what she did to Lars wasn't right, whether or not she had good intentions. When do good intentions become rotten depending on how long you wait to confess? How long would she have taken advantage of his vulnerability to have what she wanted if the monster didn't show up? Lars initiating doesn't matter because Sadie willingly put him in this situation where he was scared and sad, and didn't push him away or say no when he kissed her. Maybe I'm taking it too seriously, but it's very uncomfortable and it 'making him better' isn't an excuse. It's like saying oh but the trauma made you so nice! i will say it's a good show of how Sadie is similar to her mom, but unlike her mom she isn't told off for being controlling!
      Overall you really can't blame people getting a very icky vibe from this whole scenario.
