    The "I do believe in fairies" bit to save Tinker Bell is actually taken from the play. In the play, she's dying and the actor (or, more often, actress) who plays Peter turns to the audience and calls on them to cheer if they believe in fairies. When they first started doing this, they were actually so worried that there would be too many adults in the audience and so no one would cheer that the orchestra was instructed to cheer if no one else did. But, to their surprise, the audience participated so immediately and wholeheartedly that it brought Peter's actress to tears at the first performance. Doesn't translate super well to the screen but I still love that moment.

      Actually, I think Peter asks the audience to clap their hands if they believe in fairies rather than cheer, also saying, "Don't let Tink die!" Years ago, I saw the so-called "Mary Martin" musical version live onstage in a touring production starring Sandy Duncan in Chicago's cavernous Arie Crown Theatre (at McCormick Place), and that moment was incredibly moving. Tinkerbell, in that production, was played by a hologram.

    The thimble/kiss thing -- when Peter just held out his hand as if a kiss was an object you could hold, she offered him a thimble instead, I guess because she was taken aback that this was his reaction. And so after, when she wanted to give him a kiss *for real* she went ahead and called it a "thimble". That's why throughout the movie they kept calling each thing the other thing and vice versa. Kind of confusing as I type it out! 🤣 But definitely a charming and funny bit of writing that always gave me a laugh.

    OMG, I am BEYOND thrilled that you're watching this. I used to watch this movie as a kid and, as a teen, I realized how complex the writers made the characters. For instance, Wendy is the only person to make Peter feel romantic feelings. However, Peter's feelings can never exceed past a child's crush. From what I can see, he is just on the threshold of puberty but refuses to cross that line. So he must deny his feelings for Wendy. For example, the audience sees the two of them playing "house" together (Wendy is the mother and Peter is the father). But when Wendy asks him if he sees her as an actual romantic partner, Peter runs. Handling a serious relationship must be done with maturity and this is something he can never do. But, at the same time, Peter doesn't want to lose Wendy.
    And then there is Hook. He is outraged that Peter has a love interest, when he technically isn't supposed to. (I think this is why Hook says Peter can't love. Children only have a shallow understanding of romantic love and, since Peter vows to always be a child, he can never give Wendy what she wants.) So he tries to persuade Wendy to join him. When she eventually refused, he tries to kill her.
    Anyway, I hope this brief character analysis gives you a better understanding of the movie. Thanks for watching it.

    I loved this version! I was 11 when this came out! Jason Issacs who played Hook was filming this when he was offered the role of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter. He was sceptical at first of playing a similar style bad guy to Hook but his daughter convinced him to take the role. I hope ‘Hook’ is not too far away now you’ve got a good grasp of the Peter Pan Story. Another lovely performance from Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman is a brilliant and quite different Hook to what we see here.

Hooks pain when he realized that Peter had something that he did not. He was lost and empty with nothing but vengeance driving him.

    Not you calling Smee Smeagle the whole time..!
    I'm so glad to see you react to this movie, and even more glad you liked it so much. It's one of my personal favorites and I still go back to listen to it's soundtrack every so often. The romance and depth this movie gave to Wendy and Peter is so compelling compared to the Disney animated version, as is the writing overall. While the Disney original is a solid, fun adventure filled with childlike wonder, this movie's themes stuck with me as a kid and still makes me think now that I'm an adult.
    Though I agree with you that they pushed the lost boys, Tinkerbell, Smee(gle) and even Wendy's brothers more towards the background in favor of making it Wendy, Peter, and even more of Hook's story. And yeah, as iconic as the 'believe in fairies' scene is, it doesn't hold much weight if you don't get to care much about Tinkerbell. Smee had some funny lines but they definitely made him a lot less silly. It's a shame, but it's a big cast of characters and they probably had to change these things if they wanted to give this movie a bit more focus. They're all still charming characters nonetheless.

      I haven't seen the animated version so I didn't know that the lost boys, Tinkerbell, and Smee had a bigger role in that film. Now I'm interested in comparing both versions.

    Some fun facts: Tiger Lily is played by Native American Carsen Grey and speaks in her nation’s language. Something that wasn’t done before (and rarely done since).
    Peter’s actor kept messing up the kiss scene on purpose lol.
    This is the closest adaption to the 1911 screen play/novel. Many lines in the film are included or chapter titles.
    I really recommend reading the original 1911 novel as it’s much darker and less comedic than the Disney adaption, which truthfully isn’t that great.
    As other people suggested Hook (1991) and Finding Neverland (2004)are other great Peter Pan inspired works!

  • @Xenotric
    @Xenotric Před 2 lety +29

    Peter Pan was actually written in 1911 originally, so the reason some things seem off is due to the time period of its original conception, even the disney animated film adapted and changed things. I hope we get to see Hook soon now :3 its a great laugh and if you want more Pan based fun check out "Peter Pan Gone Wrong" for a slapstick comedy.
    Classic disney films are almost all adaptions of even more classic fairy tales. Definitely quite cute that you mixed up smeagle and schmee ;) smeagle is the lord of the rings character silly :P

    I LOVE this Peter Pan movie! It’s my favorite one out of all of them. Also love the new scenes that they added. I mean I’ll still always love Disney’s original and all. Also if I remember correctly in the original story book of Peter Pan he did go back to his home but he’s parents already at that point forgot him and had a new baby and the window was shut, so he went back to Neverland. There’s a movie called lost girls which is a Peter Pan remake but it’s based on the darker version/side of Peter Pan & it’s about the generation of the darling girls. But the 2003 version will always be the best Peter Pan film of all time. I discovered this film when I was like 12 or 13 & even tho it came out a year before I was born I couldn’t even believe that it existed until I found out about it. It’s the best! Love your videos!

  • @PixarShark
    @PixarShark Před 2 lety +6

    This version definitely pulls a lot more from the original book, while the Disney one took a bit more liberties - I guess to make it a little more comedic and fun. A lot of the narration and the lore we get from it is from the book. And additions like Wendy being saved by Peter's acorn (in the animated one they shot at her but never hit her), the boys building the house around her, Tink drinking the poison for Peter, Wendy's "hidden kiss" and other odd little additions that weren't in the animated one all come from the book. Definitely worth a read! I haven't finished it yet but def enjoying it so far. And you'll def see the hints at them again when you watch Hook! 💖

    I'm just so glad you watched this movie. This is my favorite Peter Pan movie, I never liked the Disney animated one cause of several reasons but this one is just so magical, beautiful, emotional and heartfelt. I watched it in theaters as a kid and the magical feeling has never left me. What a time to be alive in 2003. The score is one of my favorite fantasy film scores alongside Narnia, Harry Potter and Edward Scissorhands, really gives you that uplifting magical feeling of flying in the air with Peter himself. Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd Wood, they were the perfect Peter and Wendy. So much chemistry and love, I don't think any other portrayals can top them. I still continue to ship them as a couple which makes the ending very heartbreaking.
    This was lighting in a bottle, even if Disney is doing their own live action version, I don't think this can be topped. This is probably the closest Peter Pan adaptation that is very faithful to the source material, for a lot of people this was their definitive Peter Pan same goes for me. This one was never meant to follow the animated one as it takes more from the source material that is the book, the animated one took some liberties that to me took away the heart and magic of the story. So this one will always be THE Peter Pan adaptation for me.
    Up next you should watch Hook, another childhood classic. If you want more fantasy films with vibrant scores and stories, watch the 2015 Disney live action Cinderella and Nanny McPhee.
