  • President of the S.S. Kresge Company, Harry B. Cunningham, looked for ways to expand Kresge into the discount field and opened Kmart. Opening a small "bantam" Kmart in San Fernando, California early in 1962, the first full sized Kmart was opened in an 80,000 square foot building in Garden City, Michigan on March 1, 1962. Check out the video to learn more of the backstory and what eventually happened to this particular Kmart location.

Mom took us to that first K-Mart in Garden City back in the late 60's, and one nearby in Westland in the early 70's. Sure miss those days.

I used to walk to that Kmart too with my mom in the late 60s. We may have been neighbors! What street did you live on?

I’m not sure why you think there is anything built on the side of the original Kmart. As of last week, it is still vacant and bare. You can still see where the store sat. I appreciate your video, but it’s always good to do a bit of fact, checking prior to making claims such as this.

Can you do a video about the history of the Plaza Mall in New Orleans that was ravished by Hurricane Katrina?

Nothing is there to this day. L.A. fitness backed out and was never built. Now it is just fenced in concrete.

That's terrible how they did the Original Kmart in its final time on earth! That store should've been saved and restored to its original look as a Kmart historical museum. But no lets tear it down and forget about it and it's legacy for a stupid gym that no one would even care to go to anyway.

There is no LA Fitness at the site of the first Kmart in Garden City, Mi. . They backed out of the deal when Covid struck. It is still vacant land.
