The History of Worth Mart A Short Lived Concept from Woolworth
Welcome to the 100th video of Retail Rewind! Thanks to those over the years that have stuck with us and I appreciate the support! I know videos have dwindled the last year plus but sometimes life prevents things - but in a good way. So I appreciate everyone for watching the old and new videos that do appear!
For the 100th video, I wanted to do something different and a more obscure company. Even though the F.W. Woolworth Company is not small, doing my first video on Woolworth, I thought it would be fun making this video being an off shoot of Woolworth. Welcome to Worth Mart! Beginning in the mid-1960s, there isn't much history documented or even photography, but this was a short lived experiment for Woolworth and a competition for their Woolco stores - which eventually Woolco would win out. #retailrewind #woolworth

WRONG! The Shadoe Stevens commercials were one of the best things Federated had going for it, responsible for 500% growth in the 1st year they ran. They even got two pages of coverage in Time Magazine. But when Atari took over, the President of Atari told Shadoe he could keep making "those commercials," but he wasn't going to pay anything like what Federated had been paying him. So Shadoe Stevens quit, and Federated went bankrupt 15 months later.

Our 1st born, a son named Douglas, "Dougie" was born Oct. 8, 1953 but died of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Jan. 29, 1954. We enjoyed one Christmas season with him. He loved looking at the lights on the tree and listening to the Christmas songs, including Rudolph. After he died I rewrote the words to the song Rudolph, for our Dougie: Dougie, Our Bright-eyed Baby Dougie, our bright-eyed baby, Had a very tiny nose. And if you ever saw him, You would even say, "He glows!" All of the other babies, Used to laugh, but not the same. They were'nt our little Dougie Playing and cooing his baby game. Then one frightful Friday morn, The Lord took him away. "Dougie with your holy light, Won't you show us wrong from right?" Oh how we pray and miss him As we cry in misery, "Dougie, our bright-eyed baby, You've gone down in history!" Here it is...70 years later and we have 3 more children, 3 grandcren and 6 great grandchildren, but I still miss Dougie. As did his Dad. and his siblings who never knew him, but knew OF hom.

I first learned about the Sears Modern Homes after watching History Detectives on PBS for the first time years ago. It was in the 2000's and I knew back then that Sears had a home improvement section, but I hadn't known that the store sold entire houses through their catalog. Was I in for a surprise! Those houses were beautiful! I loved the ones with Victorian-style designs 🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡 EDIT: Sears stopped selling catalogs in 1993 in the US, but the catalogs were still being published in Canada for until at least the late 1990's until production ceased altogether in that country, too

And can you blame business owners? if I was a business owner as a black man myself why would I want to open a business in a predominantly black neighborhood, when I know the struggles that i would have to face and deal with those areas and thats just the truth.
