Kids are typically in pain when they're fussy like that on a plane cause their ears hurt due to the pressure changes and they don't know how to verbalize it to their parents.
You try getting a toddler and under to pop their ears. Im an adult with major ear problems when flying is in extreme pain. Yeah, it's annoying, but it's not like an adult crying out because of it. Be thankful that you're not flying in pain from ears or after a major surgery in the most uncomfortable chairs ever. Fly private next time

As someone that took a one year old on a plane cross country I wish there was a place for us to stay away from everyone else. I was embarrassed by my child's behavior yet there was little I could do since he could not understand why his ears hurt. Moral of the story: If the family really wants to see their first grandchild perhaps they should come to him.
