  • The Image: The cold steam on the beer glass in the closeup, which Anson so tenderly caresses: an Iconic scene - literally makes me feel thirsty! And of course Sylvia Sims (who died yesterday...) - all round British gal and good sport.

And of course they are (inadvertently, I suppose) drinking to the end of British supremacy in the theatre of war, aren't they? The end of Empire. Everything really. (Still, the lager looked nice - and it was "ice cold' by the looks of it!)
Nice little anecdote about this famous scene here: • ICE COLD IN ALEX - The...
And here is the inevitable advert that Carlsberg made about this scene (basically the scene frame for frame with a bottle of their lager in colour at the end! • Carlsberg Ad Ice Cold ...

A fitting tribute to a fine lady and a fine performance - especially amongst such a strong male cast. This is one of the few scenes in movie history that puts a lump in my throat - by this point you've almost lived the story with them. The delivery of this finale in the book is equally emotive too. I love the quality of the photography in this movie, the superb contrast, the wonderful filtration of the desert and sky... Mid-century B&W cinema was such a beautiful medium, very few modern attempts / emulations get it right.
PS - This film scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. There were so many ways to die horribly in quicksand on TV / in movies in the 1970s, and this 1950s classic - when I saw it - added greatly to the trauma of that particular 'fetish' the industry seemed to have at the time.

Yes, I distinctly remember watching this in about 1978 with childhood pal, Sam W - and sort of thinking it was a boys kind of film - and wandering what beer tasted like. I loved the shots of the desert too. Films are a sort of unofficial diary, aren't they?
