It did not go so smooth, but I believe the result was worth it! I also show how I made wigs, clothes and shoes for these dolls. I hope you enjoy this video and I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

      Joseph is incredibly beautiful, I love the androgenous nature of these dolls. One thing I do not see enough doll artists do is represent vitiligo in their dolls--I know the artist behind Inamorata has made a few, but I'd love to see how you would approach such a project!

    Hey, I must say as ceramic person... if u use too much pigment, it slows curing inside of your form. (I never use more than 5% in the total weight of your slip )
    Pigments also throw off gravity and Thixotropy. 1.75-1.8 is ideal slurry viscosity. If you want really good results, use hydrometer for that :)
    And long mixing with small propeller helps too! Sometimes, dusting your form with dried slurry works well. If the casting is still really bad try to "age" your mold with soda solution (used as deflocculant in casting slips) but u need put only really small pinch of soda into water mixture to "age them" but it's not the best for longevity of your plaster mold.
    Or try different pigment sellers, Mason stains, or local ones. It's so much work, but cheers! It is going to work!!!🎉

    Sofie, you are a star for sharing your trials and tribulations with making porcelain dolls from scratch.
    I am very early on in my journey to making my own dolls however many artists have told me it is a dying art, this is sad, yet I see that porcelain dolls just have that ultra unique charm to them. They look so delicate and beautiful, plus, the work that goes into them simply cannot be matched with any other material.
    Sure, resin dolls also take so much time to make but I notice that porcelain is totally different, you have the firing, the casting, the painting, the trimming of seams, the chances of things going wrong, the parts potentially breaking in the mold or the kiln... this is why they cost so much.
    Then you get the painting, the fine details such as eye painting, look at Dianna Effner's work, a renowned doll artist whose work is now loved worldwide thanks to her family sharing her dolls after her passing.
    I have a baby painted by Dianna and the eye painting is simply incredible, my admiration has only increased since getting this doll and I see just how much work goes into these dolls.
    Your beautiful Magnolia doll, the delicate details in her outfit, the hand painted features, the stunning hair you made for her... you, Sofie, are a master artist and have a truly beautiful skill.
    I am grateful for your videos, they will help me to learn more about this art and I truly hope I can paint one of my own dolls one day, even if it's just one I make, I will appreciate the work that goes into them even more ❤❤

    To be honest, I had my doubts. But the tone came out so amazing! I hope you have plans to go even darker in the future, as I know that they will look just as beautiful.
    Is there a reason why you’d rather color the slip than paint the doll? My guess is that it would be very expensive to paint the doll in this way, as well as the possibility of it chipping or getting damaged.
    Thank you for sharing. Your work is inspiring.

    • @sofiedolls
      @sofiedolls  Před 6 měsíci +29

      I'm glad you like the result! Yes, I am experimenting with darker porcelain.
      I prefer to tint the slip because this way the color turns out the most even, and it does not obscure the texture of the porcelain as paint sometimes does. And yes, the paint can chip. The paints I use are very durable, but if a doll is slighly damaged, that would be very visible.
      Thank you for your kind words! ❤️

    how beautiful!! the details are absolutely darling, im enchanted with your meticulousness. you even sculpt and paint their nails! i personally think the tinted yellow slip you show could make a pleasant asian skin tone :] and a suggestion, since you obviously pay so much loving attention to the finer touches: people with darker skin usually have paler palms and soles (even people with lighter olive tones skin), so maybe you can experiment w lighter color washes if you want to achieve that look? either way, awesome work ❤

      I tried to paint the palms and soles a lighter color, but it looked unnatural because of the texture of the paint. If I find a technic that works and looks good, I am definitely going to make it happen next time I'm making a doll with a deep skintone.

    • @fouchnickens
      @fouchnickens Před 6 měsíci

      @@sofiedollsHi Sophie, have you tried layering a thin layer of lighter/different colored clay onto the hands/feet? For many people there is a line between palmar/sole skin and the "melaninated" skin that is really most noticeable between the thumb and index finger and the back heel of the foot. Thinking about my hands, I would do a light ochre color for the overlay on the darker skin, carve the lines, and then dryly brush a rosy color on the pads of the upper hands and fingers to give a sense of lividity? But then again my hands are always cold, LOL.

    Hi Sophie, I've been a long-time lurker/admirer of your work! So glad to see to your new work and the challenge you set before yourself to create dolls in your style using different racial/ethnic traits as your guide. I was very surprised by the level of detail that changes between the the doll sets in this series, yet still readily bear the mark of a singular artist.
    I recall you mentioning it in the video, but using human hair that is rated 3 or 4 coil would probably give you the right curl pattern for dolls of African descent. Even if you smooth the hair into a straighter style, it should retain a little body to give it a sense of having been pressed. For the boy doll, another fun thing to do is to try a wave look -- I would try 4C human hair, create a similar part as the girl doll, trim hair to length, and then wet and tie down. The coils should hopefully lay down in a wave pattern. For a full blown afro? Perhaps curling hair on cocktail straws, and then fluffing it out and cutting to shape (if you ever do a radical 60s series, that is)? However, I would perhaps use a finer wool fiber for that, as I don't think most human hair sold could get the look down to scale.
    Hair coil scale: www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/hair/hair-care/curl-types
    Image of young man with waves: www.clevelandart.org/art/1999.57 (earlier styles the hair was brushed back and hair was kept longer, like the photo; modern styling the hair is brushed forward and kept shorter)

    At first I was surprised that you had such a hard time with the darker slip, since I have seen much darker toned dolls on your webiste before. But now it makes sense, there's pre-colored slip! It didn't even know that existed :'D
    I'm glad you persevered, they look wonderful! Especially the bright yellow looks so good on them.
    The problem, indeed, seems to be the ceramic pigment: It draws moisture as well, but since you cannot mix it 100% evenly, some parts have more pigment particles and dry out the slip in that area too much. Something you could try is soaking the pigment in water for a good while time before incorporating it - that's my best guess.

    Seeing photos of your face and watching your hands in the videos, l can see how you have arrived at the features of your people. My hands and fingers are far less delicate!

    Just out of curiousity, I checked on the price of these, and tbh I expected them to cost more with all the work you have to do on every cast =O I know some resin BJDs that cost almost half of this and they "just" require sanding after casting and not aditional sculpting, and I'm not even talking about the several steps to curing not only the porcelain, but also the paint =O so much work, but wow, the end result is really stunning and beautiful!
    Edit because I should've watched to the end before commenting. The 2000 is for a full set doll?? With handsewn dress from handdyed silk and handmade shoes, with all joints sueded?! People complaining about the price are insane, I'd argue this is not enough for all the work D=

    I love the dolls!
    I can hear a slight background hum in the narration. This could be ground loop noise, which you could reduce by electrically isolating your recording components from the electrical ground circuit, using a two prong to three prong plug adaptor or with a ground loop isolating device.
    If it's not that, you could also reduce it in audio editing a software with an equalizer or band pass filter to cut out just that one low frequency.
    It was only a Iittle distracting for me, but I have dealt with that issue in my own recordings so I thought I should mention it just in case you weren't aware. Keep making amazing dolls!

    as a new viewer (and new subscriber, yay!) i really enjoyed this video and LOVE that you are working so hard on diversity because that means so much to the people who arent often represented! also i have a question, have you ever thought about trying to make different body types for dolls? (short, plump, muscular, bigger bust, etc) obviously creating a whole new body from scratch would take a very long time (let alone more than one for different types so it would have to be when you actually have the time) but i think it could be a cool idea and i feel like it would also attract more people to your great videos as well as buying the dolls themselves!💜💜💜

    They came out so lovely! I hope you find a way to create more varied skintones in the future as I would love a deep, dark skinned pair of dolls - think such dark skin, it looks almost deep blue in certain lights. I wonder how this would impact the porcelain slip, but I'd still love to see you experiment!
    I would also love more diversity in bodies too, not even necessarily in weight or whatever - I get what you are going for with these dolls, though a curvier or bulkier form for the dolls would also be interesting. I meant more in terms of limb differences or disabilities. Tiny prosthesis or the like would certainly be a fascinating challenge I imagine ^^

    why not cast with alginate or silicon and then using dentist cement that is far more resistant

    • @fuchsfarben
      @fuchsfarben Před 6 měsíci +3

      Because the cast needs to be able to absorb moisture. Otherwise, the thicker outer layer won't form and the pieces won't be hollow.
      With cement, silicon or alginate, the slip would only dry from the pouring hole, making it impossible to even dump excess slip out :)
      It would also take forever to dry.

    Jumm ok but the face features need more.variations as well. For example if you intended to make black people's dolls , them the nose are usually wider. The male's jawline amd forehead were too feminine... if these particular dolls are supposed to be indian or sri lankan the. I guess its fine but the male's head still need more masculine features.

    • @xobunnyfangsxo
