- We had a live animal call from for a restaurant in downtown reporting a Opossum in their outdoor linen storage bin, and we discovered this momma and her seven little joeys. And yes, since opossums are marsupials their young are called joeys, like Kangaroos. Be sure to subscribe for more animal calls and to watch the entire call which will be published ahead on our channel.

@Rick Wilkinson Both possum and opossum correctly refer to the Virginia opossum frequently seen in North America. In common use, possum is the usual term; in technical or scientific contexts opossum is preferred. Opossum can be pronounced with its first syllable either voiced or silent .
@Rick Wilkinson no, if you use “Virginia Opossum” yes but the slang is perfectly acceptable
Gosh, I love them too. They are one of my absolute favorite animals. I like to catch them and let them hang by the tail from my hand as I investigate them. They usually put up a really fierce act as a first line of defense, but most of that is just that, an act. Once you get one by their prehensile tail and hang it upside down, they will chill right out and normally just hang out and listen to you talk with their wiggly little ears. They are also, to my knowledge, the only marsupial native to the United States. Around here where I live, people's first reaction is to kill them. That's their reaction to most animals they don't understand. It saddens and disturbs me for it to be that way, so I do whatever I can to change the narrative of the opossum in their feeble minds. They are not here for us to kill. And, if you do kill one, you very likely may be killing a sweet mama possum who has a pouch full of helpless little babies.
@Rick Wilkinson It's ok. The critters don't have a preference. 😅💙
"They rarely have rabies" Now i can foster the possum i found in my backyard! 😃
My thoughts exactly 😅
Still do a ton of research though first! They are keystone creatures and can be super adorable but they do have very sharp teeth and claws. I would just hang out with it and let it come to you. Animals choose their people, if it senses it can relax and be comfortable around you it will be a much better experience for both of you. ❤️
Ummm, please don't do that to the wild animal just trynna live it's life... 😕
I rescued some and kept my best buddy kratos the opossum I taught him how to hang by his tail and he would sit on my shoulder when i go places he was amazing

Man, possums are so cute. I wish people gave them more love.
These are some of the healthiest looking ones I've ever seen. The ones around here look like they've been drug around by cats half the night.
And they eat ticks! So enjoy having them around~ Equal parts adorable and nightmare fuel. Such neat lil critters...
A new study actually found that opossums do not eat ticks. That myth was spread because of one very unscientific "study"
@@erintubb9860 oh, I see. Well, they're still neat~ And to be fair, the erroneous fact was being pushed by places that are usually reliable....like the National Wildlife Federation and channels like PBS, so it's not hard to believe that it was believed by many, like myself. They are, however, apparently impervious to snake venom....so that's kinda cool.
Even if they did eat ticks, that would be the least disgusting thing that they are known to eat.
They aren't scary
Fun fact ticks are one of their top favorite foods.

@@bennieboi7114 Bennie baby, I realize that living in the wild poses a serious challenge for survival. The natural animal kingdom food chain is what it is.
What I meant and hoped, and forgive me for not being clear, is that maybe the rescue gentleman would be able to take the possum family to a sanctuary where it would be relatively safe. Whether that's the plan I don't know. Regardless, I admire and appreciate those humans that take the time to remove animals from potentially bad situations. What I truly wish for is the day that all animals are treated with respect, and that they NOT be abused by humans. Maybe I am a dreamer, but hope is everlasting.
They're sooo cute. ;w; Best little workers, eating all the ticks. ❤️
They actually don't eat ticks. That myth came about from one study that dumped a bunch of ticks on an opossum and then counting how many full ticks fell off in 24 hours. The people doing the study concluded that any ticks that didn't fall off must have been eaten. A new study that checked the stomach contents and scat from wild opossums did not find any ticks or tick parts.
I'm surprised you were able to get them away from mama so easily. That's so skill. I've said it before (especially after that one snake bite) but your hands must be like solid calluses by now

More to come!
We lived to a more “rural” part of San Francisco a few years ago (yes, we have some woodsy areas here lol) and suddenly we had CRITTERS coming around and interacting with our cats. The most gentle and sweet were the opossums. They’d just sit next to our cats and hang out on the porch. Unlike those crazy confrontational raccoons that will attack you and your pets.
Some of those raccoons are just plain nuts. I had one that roamed around that was ok. It came up when I was eating pizza one night on my porch. I tossed a piece to it and it say next to my chair and ate it. It waddled off when it was done. It regularly came by whenever I was on my porch and just hung out. Called him Meatball.
@@smithsmith1956 That raccoon sounds cool. I’ve seen some that won’t back down when you’re just trying to walk to your door, though. They come at you, and you just have to back up, wait for them, then go about your business. They’re scary! That’s why I prefer opossums lol
@@smithsmith1956 I'm assuming you like Italian food🤔😂(Meatball..too funny!)
I Love most animals, but have seen & heard things about raccoons that make me kind of scared of them. I volunteered at a wildlife center in San Rafael (Marin County). Some raccoons were captured & placed temporarily in a crate. They were angry & aggressive and we were told to not approach them. A home owner once said they couldn't get a group of aggressive, feisty (I'm being nice) raccoons out of their back porch & yard enclosure, and had to call professionals. Heard stories of them drowning dogs. One near my home appeared to be stalking my cat. Here in WA, a neighbor saw one sneak up on a large, sleeping mallard duck, and though it fought hard, lost its life. 😥 (Neighbor not close enough to save it.) Raccoons were in my neighborhood for long time - heard they attacked people's cats (in fact heard frequent cat yowling at night during that time) I also think they went after a squirrel (maybe trying to protect its babies?) - heard defensive, fearful screaming for a while. (Pretty sure the poor squirrel lost. 😞) They frequented a short urban, wooded trail that I frequently use to get home. I encountered them on the trail & had to nicely ask "permission" to pass. My apartment neighbor had a family frequent his back porch area with trees around. He fed them & insisted they were harmless & didn't hurt his cats. Go figure. I think they can be docile when you're the local diner, but if you cross them they can get nasty and are NOT afraid of humans. Most people think they're darling & harmless, as I once did, but I've since become wary of them.
@@barbarahill9176 the issue there is that people feed them. That is what makes them unafraid of humans. Wild animals should be left alone and people just dont get this. I live in the country, have all my life and spent much time in the woods, and ive never encountered a raccoon acting that way. They wont even come close around here, but people dont bother them or feed them. Closest ive come to that is hearing one outside my tent while camping at the lake, and all they do there is get in trash at night.
I rescued a baby opossum years ago and she was the sweetest little girl! They're such fascinating little animals and quite smart!

They make the best pets and are easy to work with. 🤗
I love seeing people on social media with pet opossums! They are the cutest!
Awww 🥰 my goodness how sweet 🌹🙏🏼
A while back this huge possum grab one of my ducks , I stepped out of the patio as the possum was in his attack mood , it was making a lion roar sound immobilizing the duck with fear , I never thought a possum could make this sound considering possums just about the most quiet animal around .
"let me distract her" as he flips her upside down.
