Has your opinion of the 996 changed over the years? Or is it still the unloved 911?
I've always liked it. I think the Need for Speed game probably polarized me a little towards it, but honestly I saw it for what it was even in 2000. It was the only direction in which the 911 could progress in. Really don't care about the headlights et al, only the IMS bearing worries me.
Always loved it and the headlights
absolutely. When it was new I thought it was ugly but as it ages the design grows on me. The headlight design is still not my favourite but the proportions of the entire car look good, especially as 911s got longer over the last few generations
The 996 has always been my desired Porsche because the manuals were great and the looks, especially exterior, never bothered me. I’m young though so I didn’t grow up with cars from the 70s if you know what I mean. Think also the fact that they are less expensive is what makes them my dream Porsche because it’s a more realistic purchase than a gt3. And I’m all about owning multiple cars rather than putting all eggs in one basket. At the moment a Volvo, crown vic, and corvette is enough for my salary 🤣.
My first Porsche was a speed yellow ‘99 C2 6-speed. Coming up on 5 years of ownership and any thoughts of selling to upgrade are gone. I’m pretty keen on 996’s.
Always cracks me up how you get the passenger to hold your Zoom H2N 😂😂😂
It’s my favorite 😆
996 owner here - that audio is pretty impressive. Uncanny how similar it sounds to when I'm actually driving my own car. Great vid, I'm biased but I love the 996.
Is it complicated car? Expensive or so? I have an offer to buy one for 24k
@@litarmleka3511 that's not too bad for one of these
@@ianhairston5258 "not too bad" 😂 headlights are screaming "expired warranty" 😂😂
996 and 986 owner here. I used to hate the fried eggs and thought the interiors looked like a bunch of hearing aids stuck together. But as I've gotten older I've grown to appreciate both cars' cohesive design language. The're nary a straight line outside or inside. And the driving experience is so light and wonderfully analog. Great cars. Don't really need anything more.
Such a great car, i get it, it does not look as good as other 911s but as a car it's truly great
To be honest, I love the non-circular headlights of the 996. It gives the 996 front more character than any other round light 911. To me, it is one of the best looking 911, after the OG variant.
I think the 996 is the most beautiful car in the world. Change my mind
I genuinely think its the most "Porsche" looking 911. The first gen 996 with the wing is so sexy
@@yungboicontigo9278 Yes!!!
@@the80386 not to mention this isn’t the only Porsche to have this headlight. If you know your stuff you know where they came from
I really loved this video. Yes, awesome soon to be classic car. I personally like the 996, since it came out, I think this is how you modernize a classic car with style. But what I love the most about this video, is that you showed people, that you don't have to drive like a maniac in order to have fun with a car. Especially on roads that you don't know, you made it clear where they should look for traffic, never cross the double yellow, etc. I live in an area where we have roads like this. Couple of months ago, a local guy went corner hunting in his BMW with his two sons sitting on the backseat, lost control of the car and one of his son died in the accident. Guys have fun, but please be safe.
I don’t think the interior nor the steering wheel are ugly. The car is a masterpiece through and through
A 2WD version of that car is the only Porsche I've ever driven, but I loved it. It wasn't really that fast, but it was tiny and tons of fun. I've heard people say that modern 911s have gotten too big, and I though I don't speak from experience I can 100% see what they mean.
As a child of the 90s, the cars of the 90s are the most visually appealing to me and I love the 996, despite its fried egg front headlights and steering wheel. I myself drive a 1999 Miata NB and have the most beautiful country roads half an hour away from my home... It is just driving therapy.
Nice to see someone having fun but still driving with some sense. It’s not an easy skill in a car that wants to go faster
brilliant comment you made i agree
I've enjoyed this drive immensely, so thank you 'for taking me along' for this ride. I wish you could come and visit, there's a few lovely drives I'd have in mind for you!
I love these. I think the Carrera 4S looks the best, different front end, with wide hips. Perfect 996.
Thanks for letting me ride along.
Oh look at that, a good road! 🥳😉 Great stuff and I completely agree with your mindset on these drives!
*Never afraid to send it* 😮
Great start to my day! Keep it up! 🔥🔥
All those roads in that area are amazing. Absolute perfection. Turn off your GPS and just explore. Tennesse, North Carolina and Georgia all meet up there; amazing roads spill through and between all three states.
Come down to Chattanooga and drive my 911 turbo! We have a Tennessee drivers club meeting next weekend at the dragon if you're still in town.
Welcome to the great roads along the TN/NC border. You also passed my favorite place to stay while there, Snowbird Mountain Lodge, on the downhill just past the official end of the Cherohala. I've driven about 8-10 different BMWs over the years, in that area.
The 996 has always been one of my fav, maybe my favorite, despite all the trash talk about it. My dad was a lucky owner of a 996 Turbo and man what a smile on my face when he was taking me for a ride 😁 The paint was a light grey and he had the headlights in bright white xenon, and at the time it was looking absolutely mean in your mirror. It still does actually, he’s still driving it!
I always loved the 996 and really my attainable dream car was always a carrera 2 manual in speed yellow 🤷
@@PriestOfAuril Speed yellow yes! Great great great choice😁 I wish you can find one 🤞🏻
I love my 996, C4S...and yes in Speed Yellow.
My father and I did a road trip out to there from Dallas in his bug eye WRX. We also drove the Cherohala Skyway and I actually prefer it to the Tail. The speeds are a little higher, the views are better and it has WAY less traffic.
All these need to look amazing are 996.2 lights and if one feels like spending some money, the factory aero kit.
This is so cool to watch. I’m in the process of trying to buy a 2005 997 so this is right on time.
Great Vid...Thank you for showcasing such an Underrated car. I love my 996 C4S, I honestly believe it is the Most beautiful 911 ever made...especially from Rear 3/4s. It's so fast when you want and so easy to cruise when you need. Interior is no joke with Leather aplenty and the visibility and reliability has been superb. The Non Tradional Headlights are what makes the model stand out as the Sound and the Drive are the perfect Blend of Old Enough and New ish...
Great spirited video, not too fast nor slow. We motorcycled this route many times as well as the Dragon, mucho fun. One of these days hope to get back to NC in our 996.2.
I myself drove 700miles to North Carolina/Tennessee last April by myself and enjoyed the skyway and dragon and all the other roads in the area for a week. Beautiful area and roads to drive.
0:45 fantastic tire choice. Definitely my next all season. Fitting for this car as well.
Looks like the inside of my 2000 Boxster which we all know is exactly the same. But the 911 is one beautiful car. Those seats look very comfortable.
That drive was very exciting.
Great video
Great car. Love the seats
I live in NC too. The smoky mountains are beautiful.
newish 996 C2 owner here (bought end of 2020) - two trips to the dragon and one including cherohala - fun car!
Cherohala is my favorite road of all time.
This thing rips, awesome man
My fav generation 911.
I do appreciate that vintage 90s Interior vibe, I think it looks super cool. B) Espacially the weel!
Dude just casually insults this guys interior 😂
the cracked eggs are slowly growing on me. later model ones with the clearer lenses and xenon package look almost fine ;) i think in 10 years they'll pick up a little classic value aesthetically. but even now, still a great value point for a proper 911.
Ted, you really picked a great place to explore in a great car! You really need to drive in Germany, the autobahn is awesome, and the mountain and backroads are perfect to discover a cars handling. There are many places to rent sports cars of all price ranges, even exotics or older cars. One of the best things about driving in Germany is that there aren’t very many morons on the road.
You were in my neck of the woods, very cool! It was fun to watch you drive a road I've driven many times. Drop a line next time you're down this way, and I'll come and stretch the Polestar wagon's legs a bit :).
Woo for Porsche content
Excellent car!
Something is special about these early 996’s!
Hey, I'm gonna be out that way in less than a month now in my 20v AW11, small world eh? Cherohala is such a fun road, just gotta get there when traffic isn't bad.
Funny story, I'm fairly certain that spot that you guys started the video at was where one of my buddy's cars had a tire de-bead from getting off the tarmac. We had a 5-man pit crew and changed it out to his spare on the spot, only a few parking spaces over from where the beauty shot was taken lol.
Also had a SW20 turbo blow his motor coming down the western end at a different event, apparently his engine decided it wanted a valve for lunch. Felt bad for the guy, getting stuck on the skyway means you're gonna be waiting for a while on a tow.
Always love watching these in conjunction with Topher's vids, it's like old vs. new cars so you can get the best of both worlds.
P.S.- Be mindful of the Civics at the Tail. It was eating them up at last year's TougeFest. 🙃
Get it! tail of the dragon is the most fun road I've ever driven! Did it in my celica, was absolutely incredible. Kangamagus highway up in NH is fun too but it's not like you can realistically come close to the limits of a car there as the corners are SO long and fast.
Reminds me of 'the notch' in-between Lake Placid and Wilmington N.Y..
Love the g meter!
Man what a beautiful car
the opening clip reminds me of the cars movie for some reason
The interior comments are BS. Yeah some plastic shortcuts, but it’s simple, functional interior, ergonomic, and the 3 spoke steering wheel is superb. My 996.1 drives great, like this one, and sounds similarly fantastic. Temp gauge and light give me some concern. Mine stays straight up at 180 temp, a tad over if stuck in traffic after driving some, never any red lights flashing or what. Car is def meant to be DRIVEN and driven hard. Kudos to you guys for a great video, and honest look. My 996.1 coupe 6sp is a similar blast to drive
waited months for this one, thanks ted. great car, great road. people are starting to realize that the 996 is the best classic 911, full stop. the 996 tides are quickly turning, just look at the PCA sonderwunsh car…
I wish they were slower in that realization😂, I am only 16 and I am afraid prices might go up really much in any time
@@sviatoslav0309dude when I was 16 four years ago I was in the same boat as you wanted a 996 bad 😂 hopefully they don't go too crazy in the next few years
I have a '99 911 996 w 50K miles. I don't give a shit or care what anybody says about the "fried egg headlights, the plastic dash or the 4 spoke steering wheel". ! love this car ! I've owned air cooled Porsches in the past. As I also loved them, this one is so much faster, handles so much better and as I live in the south, this one has ICE COLD AIR CONDITIONING !
driving down to ToD and the surrounding area is definitely up there on my bucket list!
it’s beautiful. i drove the cherohala for the first time yesterday. id recommend it over the tail because although it’s less difficult, it allows for higher speeds, has much less traffic, and the views are way better.
Nothing ugly about 996 interiors. My 99 interior has clean buttons, clean leather and not fricken nav screen and is nicely organized. 997.1 interiors are cheaper materials and too many buttons with chipping paint that don't last. Plus the 99's are lighter and have sturdy dual row bearing and suffer less from bore scoring. Did I mention they're more beautiful too?
And I love you too tedward haha!!
Interior has that late 90s Ford look
Sounds great, but I just love the 911 targa so much
Really awesome roads! I need to make the drive up there. I'm in the Atlanta metro so it'd be a weekend trip, but well worth it, from the looks of it. There are some nice roads in the mountains of North Georgia as well if you're ever in the area.
2:00 me and my friends took a road trip and drove the same roads and stopped at the same spot the solara is, many memories man.
What do you prefer 2wd or 4wd. ?
Initially I thought my 4wd was not going to give me as pure a drive but after 3 years , I like the security on imperfect surfaces.
Wish more people appreciated more egg-shape 911’s , nice drive :) 🍳
The 996 is definitely no joke
Loved the drive, checked the used car market and closed the tab immediately. Local online classifieds has adverts from years ago unless the user deleted them and these things doubled or tripled in the past 10 years. Such a shame
Yeeeee 996's are sweet, I look forth to own one some day, they are cool little cruisers
The 911 made me noticed Porsche existed 😄
The paving seems to have fewer undulations than Angeles Crest as well?
Would you have rather taken this 911 on the trip or a first gen Boxster S?
As a Tennessee native, luckily “the dragon” isn’t far from me so I go every year ! I have a NC1 Miata on Michelin pilot sport AS4s , racing sways & tein coilovers the car just doesn’t stop gripping it’s almost nauseating
Here to the Angeles Crest shout out
"Imagine if this was your commute to work, Jk this is my job" XD
One of my home roads!
Very lucky to have this in striking distance
You know, all the things they say about the 996, that it's the ugly duckling etcetera, I really think it's unloved by those who've never driven one. Honestly, it's an amazing vehicle, and much more rewarding than the fabled 964.
Some of the greatest roads in the country are up there (Cherahola, Blue Ridge, Dragon, list goes on and on...).
Nice
Driving weather can't come soon enough in New England
Would love a 996 to beat on and enjoy!
wish i knew you were coming :'(
I was literally just telling people the other day that non-Californians (I grew up on NY) have to drive 5hrs just for 3mi of twisty roads. Meanwhile in SoCal I drive 20 min from home and have 3 different roads I can shred up
lol didnt even notice how ugly the steering wheel was untill you said something about it, was too focused on the road.
Ahhhhh yes first on my dream car I love Porsche
that is not an ugly interior.
found one for 14k. Is it worth the buy?
Why drive at the limit if you're not getting paid? Solid driving as always.
Throwback to NFS Porsche
First porsche I've been in, too bad many porsche fanboys hate this car just becuz of its headlights
Love my 996 C2 with a gundo hack. Really opens up the sound. I was thinking of selling it because it’s a tiptronic but I have a blob eye STi when I want to row my own. There’s just something about that rear engine feel and with the suspension set up I have it handles like a go cart. These cars are so small and nimble. I think she’s a keeper
Greetings from Europe. Beautiful route and 911. Maybe, push a little more this beautiful flat six engine to sing more :).
When you’re 1000 miles from home with no cell service you can make those decisions for yourself 😂. I chose to make sure the car got us home
@@TedwardDrivesI get it 😁, anyway nice ride.
The car that started it all for me! First one I ever sat in was almost just like this one. 4S, though, with a gray exterior. Yeah yeah, fried egg headlights, water cooled, bla bla bla, personally idc.
a 1999 still has a display map.
The interior looks like a '99 Ford Focus.
Boston or Peabody lol
No start-up?
You’ll see why in the next video
@@TedwardDrives I'll be looking forward to that one, then.
@@TedwardDrives You weren't kidding, that's for sure. I watch binaural audio stuff for all the mechanical sounds, like button presses, physical keys, etc., so that was an absolute treat to me. However, I can see how your day was almost ruined. I'm glad that you got it to run.
What's wrong with the wheel? it looks better than a ferrari roma. Also besides the material choices somewhat, the interior hasn't aged at all. TBF I like the 996, but I'm the only one among all of my porsche loving friends, they're all about the 993 (which I like least of the 911) and the 997.
It's a pretty good car if you exclude the stupid headlights
STAGE 2 PORSCHE 996 😍czcams.com/video/zkuTKSziNaE/video.html
All 986 and 986s overheat.I love porsches but most of them are not good
kinda want to start a debate, are 3 cylinders enough for a small car?

Back when German engineering meant something
bmw z3m roadster far superior to 911
