  • These shows are a real treat for Fred Allen fans, since they may never be shown on TV again due to the prominence of the cigarette sponsor, Old Gold. As far as I'm concerned, any Fred Allen video is a precious Fred Allen video, since there's so very little outside of What's My Line. But at least this handful of his shows was rerun once, so you can. . . Judge for Yourself!

I wish I had been to a social occasion with Fred and Groucho Marxs, their thinking and their humour was on another level, brilliant, inventive, fascinating and amusing. It must have been like listening to someone from another dimension.

Wow! Don Pardo! I didn’t even know he was doing tv way back in the early 50’s.

"Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets would be released only 4 short months after the airing of this program, and would start a monumental change in American popular music.

I actually loved the first song. Had not heard it before. Fred Allen was a stitch. Very funny. I don't remember this show from back then, unfortunately, but I do remember "What's My Line?".

The Skylarks appeared on the premiere episode of "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" on the CBS Television Network in 1950.

I came here to see Fred Allen because he was so funny on What's My Line? As to the music, it seems terribly dated - I can see now why Elvis Presley was so revolutionary to some and so dangerous to others. I think Fred was better without a script as on What's My Line? He was particularly good at filling quiet moments in the show with unexpected, often self-mocking remarks.

I listen to Radio Classics on SXM radio all the time and I love it when I get to hear so many of the comics from the 30s-50s! That’s when people were actually funny and nit just being vulgar to get laughs!

I thought A Girl A Girl was the sure winner.

Tony Martin made a magnificent recording of "Here" and Eddie Fisher had a hit with the novelty song "A Girl, A Girl". I was very happy to see that the 12 year old girl won the $1,000 -- that was a lot of money in 1954. Besides she was cute as a button.

Yeah very talented young lady for sure. but I liked the second song the best, as did the two gentlemen.
A very solid entertaining episode of an otherwise pretty silly show.

Don Pardo from SNL fame is the announcer.

    • @Tre404

Dennis James is the announcer on this episode. Fred calls him by name at 20:26 . Also, Dennis looks and sounds nothing at all like Don Pardo.

How could glove buying be a full time occupation

    • @Tre404
      @Tre404 Před 4 lety +3

Department stores have buyers of all kinds, and depending on the size of the store chain, glove-buying could very easily be a full-time job, particularly back in the 1950s, when gloves were worn regularly by many.

Have you ever been to a really elegant event? Gloves are still worn at top notch dinner parties and high class events. And they were worn even more back in that time.

You didn’t get a chance to see the real Fred Allen - this was just a short blip of a program! I am sorry about that!
