how to replace the keyboard t430 with t420?
It's funny how installing a classic IBM version of the keyboard is considered an upgrade. I don't disagree, but it's just funny.
yea it would technically be a downgrade, but probably one that you would like
you wouldn't get it
I kind of like the new one honestly.
@@asineth832 Shirley, you can't be serious! 🙃
I scoured the internet looking for a laptop that didn't suck with that style of keyboard
I think the screen is the most essential upgrade, the TN panel is easily the first thing that needs to go if you want to upgrade a t420/t430. IPS 1080p is amazing.
i threw a 720p ips in the x220
or whatever pixel the original resolution is.... looks good (color) and on a 12 inch 1080p would look probably too small
on these 14 inchers 1080p mod is nice

T430 are so fun to tinker with. Really sturdy and modular machines for the price
Good timing doing this right after your Mac Book video xD
:D :D :D
lmaooo
Macbooks do have better battery life, Faster SSD speed and form factor, but they sacrifice reliability, durability and longevity. Soldered SSD's will fail even if you don't use them, they degrade over time. Once they do fail, it basically bricks your system until you can get a new one or repair it. To repair memory or SSD on a macbook m1 requires very expensive tools, so it will cost at least 300-400$ for a shop to do it, 500$ for apple to do it I heard. Meanwhile on a thinkpad you can easily replace the battery and SSD for under 60$, repaste the cpu every 5 years, it will have a very high chance of working for decades.

Wait until he starts talking about dwm lol
I'm trading in an old dell for a ThinkPad from 2010. I'll add an SSD and an Intel Core i5.
A bit like watching Bob Ross drawing one of his landscapes... ;)
wow the screen upgrade looks fantastic.
Nice. I'm watching of upgrading a T430 from a fully upgraded T430. 👍
Nice reach around at 17:13 ;)
In all honestly I really enjoyed this video, seems like some nice upgrades! Also that Lenovo is CLEAN!!!
Your wallpaper is so so so pretty! Love it so much ;-;
Very nice one, very satisfying, thanks for that

@@WolfgangsChannel did you install additional thermal pads on your mac book air?
Well if you often use it like that than that's most likely best. 😅

never knew this was a thing, but I fully appreciate it.
I've burned out the converter board and the motherboard by accidentally connecting them when the power cord was in and blowing the backlight fuse (hopefully the mobo isn't actually damaged but I have no way to check yet), and I've only recently managed to acquire another used T430 for cheap, so all the parts are ready for me to repeat this upgrade but with a WQHD panel (thankfully it didn't suffer any ill effects) and an i7-3840QM. Thanks for the video, it will come very handy during the process.
Amazing video! Congratulations for this work!!
Amazing video, looks like a surgeon who knows his craft.
Now we need a playlist of these videos.
Now you're using PopOS! 21.04 on your thinkpad, will you do a review or video talking about it?
Great video. You should add the screwdriver to "other stuff that I use:". When using the new keyboard, does the screen brightness still work via function keys?
Great Video Wolfgang. How did you mange to get the LVDS Adapter to fit into that space along with the wiring?
Love this style of video BTW
Nice nail polish color man! Fits the thinkpad aesthetic nicely
Excellent video. nice Mado wallpaper, these laptops with good 2D acceleration are great for playing old RPGmaker titles.
Will you do an EC modding (battery, kb) + 1vyrain installation tutorial video next?
Awesome, I love ThinkPads specially the IBM´s
i do love these asmr videos, i just stick on on my second monitor and relax: also: would *love* to know more about the 1920x1080 screen upgrade (price, and possibly a UK/European seller), i have a HENCH t430, but its only 1366x768 and screen is the next upgrade im doing.
Yoy can do WQHD if you find a compatible panel (Aliexpress link lists some) and use a different converter board from the same seller.
Me too
I remember adding copper shims to my T430 GPU, they decreased the temp. by 10-15°C and prevented throttling.
Have a question! If you get is message sir, please bump :) regarding shims

@@joshtree8298 Thanks for the question Josh
what cooper shims, which exact place?

Hey Wolfgang!
I’m wondering if you have a favorite - t440p or t430?
Also do you find the electric screwdriver faster than a analog with a smooth palm spinner?
A electric screwdriver is much faster. The issue is that they aren't built great usually and often die. My coworker just had his wowstick die after one year, and mine just died after a month.
Thanks for the foam tip :)
Really cool upgrade tbh, i wonder how does one picks up a better monitor...
like the screwdriver with the light, good ideal put the screws in that tin can (i use a big magnet i got from a old speaker) nice video
It's getting harder to explain my watch history
Hi mark
thank you. this was lovely
i fucking love your content and i love your new tattoo, keep up with the good work !
Feels so good
Does the keyboard of an x230 work? I see that you use a lathe to file it, can you explain this a bit? To connect the motherboard to the IPS, what cables do I have to use? thank you.
I've got the same setup. It's top to have it! I have a question what actually is "magic eraser"? I need to scrub too.
Did your led for caps lock light on when you use it?
What are you thinking about using it for? Dope vid, love the lights
YES er did es again! love this guy
Is that a thick guitar pick you used to pry open the plastic seams? Or is that a dedicated tool? This is relaxing, but also it wouldn’t put me to sleep because it’s so interesting lol.
You're getting more creative with your nails , love it
Use trackpoint with middle finger. Less strain on hand and ergonomical too
Thanks for uploading :)
Dear Wolfgang, any chance to also list the link for the pink foam you've used?
Can you please let me know where you got that motorized screwdrivers?
Very good, thank You !!!
how much did everything cost? Does you see an performance improvement?
dont you just love it when humans dont talk :) so peaceful
i never would’ve thought i’d see someone mod a laptop keyboard with foam, what type of foam did you use? i’d love to try that when i mod my t430!
It's an ESD foam, and rightfully so. Probably the best use for that foam I have seen yet..! You can tell it's ESD and safe to use in that manner from the Pink color. There is also a blue ESD fome but tends to be much more rigid... One of the components used came packaged in the ESD foam I would imagine... Excellent stuff right here, next time don't forget to upgrade the Ram too..!
@@mattpearson8843 where can you get it
Definitely worth subscribing❤🎉
Actually planning on getting a T430S or an X230 in the future and running Fedora on it. Overall, these are still great devices, especially for kids. Simple to fix, simple to use, and simple to upgrade.
Nice movie. I would just add some subtitles
with upgrade instructions to create more educational material. But it's still great.
nah, considering someone installed gentoo using his asmr video i think he needs to make them less “educational” for the health of his viewers
@@Vaughanflaherty imagine watching this ASMR so you can sit back and relax but getting a headache instead when reading the subtitles 🤣
Doctor on the ER be like : u did wut?...
I'm leaving the stock keyboard and I haven't upgraded the display because I haven't got around to it, but I flashed Ivyra1n and removed the wifi card whitelist. I removed the battery whitelist too just in case even though I never plan to use a cheap battery in it.
CZcams was constantly recommending me this so I watched it
Excellent video
Congrats...
How are the thermals with that upgraded cpu?
Does the converter board block airflow in that cavity?
Okay now I just need a quiet reading of Mutual Aid to achieve full self-actualization
Does anyone know what manufacturer of this keyboard with FRU: 45N2118 ?
What about Batterij?
Like high capacity one
And making battery monitor regulator?
What were the chances you'd post this while I was going through the same process. Freaking awesome.
Why was it necessary to remove the DVD drive?
How much was the total cost of the laptop plus upgrades? I ask, because I was originally planning on getting a T430 and upgrading it similarly to this. But then I discovered that the W530 (15inch while the T430 is 14 inch) almost always comes with a quad core stock, and often comes with a really nice 1080p screen to boot.
In fact, its 1080p screen is one of the best default displays old thinkpads come with to my understanding. I just got on ebay for just under $200 (no charger, battery, hard drive though, so really $350-ish when all said and done). I'm curious what value you got with this build, since you're final specs would be similar to my W530 that. In fact the W530 has a better quad core.
@@WolfgangsChannel
Have you considered getting a W530 instead? Was curious on your thoughts about that.
Overall €473 ain't too bad, especially in europe where this stuff is harder.
@@copper4eva hummm i have owned both models, the t430 altought somewhat chunky its kinda portable the w530 its not portable that thing is heavy af and will cause you back pain if carry it around😅
@@dzalejandro
Is that the W530 that much heavier? I would not have guessed an extra inch would do all that much. Personally I have the 9 cell battery, and the 9 cell slice battery, and I carry it around no problem. But I could see why some people would find it annoying.
Link for the screwdriver?
Hi Wonfgang, wonderful video.. thank you! May I ask you whether the screen and the CPU upgrade can also take place (with the same part numbers) onto a T430s -which is the one I have? I have already upgraded the Hard Drive and RAM, and thinking of upgrading the CPU -if possible, as well as the screen with the one you have upgraded your T430.
Also, what is the LVDS-to-eDP converter and why does it need to be changed/added?
Thank you and well done once more for the great video!
Hey!
1. The screen upgrade is possible for the T430s, but you'll need a different eDP adapter
2. The LVDS to eDP adapter is necessary because LVDS (the display protocol used in T430(s)) only supports up to 1600x900px resolution
3. The CPU upgrade is not possible unfortunately, since the CPU is soldered to the motherboard
P.S. Thanks for the donation :)
@@WolfgangsChannel Thank you once more, will then look for a LVDS to eDP for a T430s. Any thoughts on what “type” of LVDS to eDP connector I need for the T430s? How do I determine what is the “right” convertor type? Are they “T430s” converter models or I need myself to understand what is the correct one? Thank you!
Its 2024, and I am watching from a T430. And trust me my, T430 is still going strong....
had a similar laptop, really nice one
What application or website do you recommend for making money, and spending it online?
You probably don't use your hackintosh anymore since you already own a real mac, but may I ask how's your battery life on hackintosh? Is it any better if not on par or worse than Windows? Thank you!
A bit worse, mostly because of the need to enable the "BIOS assist" Thunderbolt mode. In Windows you can use the "Native mode" which only powers on the Thunderbolt controller when it's actually being used.
You’re going to make a vid for every Thinkpad
Is that plastic you used for your "caddy" by any chance an anti-static bag? I wouldn't go sticking one of them inside a machine if it was, they're conductive.
Oof. Okay, thanks for the tip
@@WolfgangsChannel For things like that I like to fold paper and jam it in
@@WolfgangsChannel No worries, thanks for the video.

Curious to know if you upgraded the BIOS as well. I’m running a T430 as well, without duel booting, only Linux, and wanted to know if it’s possible to upgrade the bios without windows. Any suggestions?
have you looked into seeing if it's possible to make a bootable installer for it in linux?
Use a flash drive with Windows To Go.
hello can I use also the N140HCA-EAE Rev. C1?

Sick nailpaint my dude🥰👍 V relaxing and well produced video
What's the tool he is using in the video?
What did he plug with SSD? Was that a piece of paper??? 6:20
Have you had any issues with the RAM? I've seen videos were upgrading the CPU causes one of the RAM slots to stop working.
Nope, have RAM sticks in both slots and they work fine
@@WolfgangsChannel awesome thanks!

I was a BRAINLET! Who bought a raspberry pi 4B 8GB as desktop, but evidently, it has ass video performance on Arch based (Manjaro in my case), even after compiling MESA from source, it's shit. Any ThinkPads you can recommend for under $200?
For $200 you might be able to find an Athlon APU + A320 mobo + 8GB of RAM bundle.
