Extreme Trains. The longest trains in model railroading will be featured on the layout all weekend! Event will run during normal operating hours. April 19 - April 21, 2024. Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley, Colorado 04/19/2024.
Groundbreaking for this museum was in 2002 with the 10,000 square foot facility opening Memorial weekend 2009. David Trussell’s plan came together with over 27,000 hours of volunteer labor building the Oregon California & Eastern Railway modeled after the real OC&E logging railway which is set in 1975, covering 5,500 square feet.
The layout main line is 1,353 feet or 20.5 scale miles with over 80 scale miles on the layout. Running at a scale speed of 20mph it takes over 1 hour to run the length of the mainline, but often the engineers are stopped by the 150 track side signals controlled by the dispatcher using a real CTC dispatcher’s panel along with radio communications to each train’s engineer. This all means that the layout operates like a real railroad. Over 150 various powered locomotives can be seen pulling a variety of over 2,500 freight and passenger cars. Some engineers spend their time moving and switching cars in one of the many switching yards rather than the long trip on the mainline. Behind the scenes is the massive staging yard under train layout. A computer can also run 9 trains on the layout.
With 4 fulltime staff members and countless volunteer hours the museum also has a collection of artifacts and exhibits. Exhibits include a Department 56 Christmas Villages Collection, Colorado & Southern (C&S) 10583 Caboose built in 1919, Lionel Trains Collection and much, much more.
