  • edit: my bad on mentioning undertale as a "horror" game. i havent actually played it too much and just assumed the dark look of the game and the horror fanart ive seen meant it was horror/drama based! sorry!
Here it is finally my puss in boots 2 review! This took me so long as i said in the beginning.
I'm gonna return to just doing whatever i want whether its live action or animation. Even if i feel i'm not offering variety, yall seem to like the channel how it is anyway 🙂
Today i talked about the cool flashbacks, how much i love the wolf, my adoration of the horror elements and of course shrek 5 being real maybe?
HUGE THANK YOU TO MY FIRST EVER CO-EDITOR ZACQUINN! (he edited the entire wolf introduction scene along with the whistle part! He made this video so much more possible with my lack of motivation.

When I saw Death in theaters, I knew that one day, I wanted to make an animated movie with an antagonist as terrifying as he was. The way he was introduced and the way he fights, it's just so freaking epic. Essentially, I wanna traumatize my own character. I can't stop gushing over how chilling and awesome he was. Side note, I noticed that one of the few times, or possibly the only time, Death is announced by his whistle is in the Soul Cave scene. Instead, he just _appears_ out of nowhere, instantly ramping up the tension by taking away the thing you've been taught to look out for.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is seriously amazing, and I have to say Death is one of the best villains put to screen in an animated movie, or maybe cinema entirely. What made this movie so captivating for me was the first scene with death. Puss was so sure he could defeat this so-called "bounty hunter ". After all, we had just seen him take down a freaking giant, he could handle a wolf, right? But the tables had turned within an instant. And as memories flashed through his mind with every clash of death's blades I began to feel... afraid? I had never before watched an animated film that could make me feel anything more than slightly anxious or creeped out. But this movie changed that. I honestly hope they get this experimental with upcoming projects.

I always admired the way his character was so fearless and confident. So to see Puss give up because of he was so scared, that his pride and power was taken away from him in just one scene just hurt something inside of me. I low key sobbed watching that happen. It was like i was in the story and I was helpless to do anything except watch. But I loved watching this movie, the power these animators held over me was JUST STRONG. Everything about this movie was just perfect.

I just love when PG animated films actually feels the most intense and how certain scenes are straight-up horror.
The Last Wish pretty much gave me more than I expect and I love every moment of it. It didn't feel like a kids' movie (again, it's a *family* picture and animated films G or PG aren't for kids only) and felt more oriented to older viewers who grew up with Shrek. Anything with the wolf, the rather mature themes and even more intense violence (i.e. the visible blood drop from Puss' forehead and the two "Spanish splinter" scenes that made my fingers cfinge uncomfortably), the film has it.

Fun Fact: Death didn't appear in the Tavern/Bar first. He actually showed up behind the Crowd (that did the wave) when Puss was fighting against the Giant (Before he died an 8th time). He just simply was chilling in the shadows. Since Puss laughs in the face of death, he never noticed Death was always there for every life he died at. A truly outstanding move.
Death was always there. He's fully justified on killing Puss' last life.
This made his appearance more so build up way before the Doctor told him of Death

"Animation is a (kids') genre" is something that DreamWorks might finally be able to change people's minds on. Animation is not a genre, it's a medium, and it needs to be treated as such. I'm glad that it's starting to become more expressed in the work that more mainstream studios such as DreamWorks are beginning to put out.
The visuals have spark and personality and *life,* and the stories are getting better and better with well-developed themes and the characters to deliver them without pulling any punches. We need more of that.
As a person that can't stand anime for the art styles and dies every time I hear someone talking about one with good stories to tell because I just can't make myself watch them, I'm glad that western animation is slowly starting to catch up in terms of respecting itself enough to begin to, even if slowly, expand its target audience.
If studios get the confidence to make big-budget animated horror movies, I'll gladly pay to go see it even if it turns out bad because that little niche needs to be expanded significantly because as a horror enjoyer and an animation enthusiast, there is simply not enough of it past a few foreign films I was able to find through some very exhausting research.

One thing I’ve rarely seen mentioned so maybe it’s just me (also I haven’t finished the vid so maybe you mentioned it) but in Puss’s theme it has a whistle in the background to it similar to Death’s. It always made me nervous that the Wolf was going to show up at any moment. Sometimes he did and sometimes he didn’t. It was perfect in holding tension for me.

12:15 that wasn't just what you thought, you know what I thought when I saw the blue flowers? they have SPIKES, you can see the beauty and you can love the smell of the flowers, but once you touch them, you're going to feel "hurt" something I didn't expected coming from Perrito "world", but it makes so much sense coming from him, he doesn't really care about the bad things in the world, that's why he can appreciate the flowers without being hurt by them, something the cats really can't at the first time, and I MEAN IT, just think by yourself like the movie made you think lol | Kitty Softpaws and puss in boots literally didn't trusted each at first, only in the half of the movie she trusted him, just like the flowers that attacked them when they didn't trusted the flowers, I think that world has so much more to offer in terms of character dynamics, is a shame we didn't got to see more

Haven’t seen the movie yet (desperately want to tho) but sometimes, I kind of wonder when the internet’s Puss in Boots phase will end.
I mean, the internet has gone through an Encanto phase, a Luca phase, and even with a bunch of stuff beyond animation (Squid Game, for example. Remember when people wouldn’t stop talking about that?)
It kind of scares me that in like, a year, people will stop talking about this movie. If Dreamworks DOES enter it’s new “golden legacy”, it MIGHT get referenced every now and then as the movie that “saved” dreamworks. However…it’s so weird that one everyone will forget about it (or at least not talk about it as much)

    • @annaviedoux9028
      @annaviedoux9028 Před rokem +1

Honestly, same. The Internet is fickle and once they find a new hyped-up series/film, Puss in Boots will kinda fade away. I guess it's inevitable and I think one thing Dreamworks can do to keep this film 'fresh' is by giving us cameos of Death in their future movies since it makes sense he'll be lurking around the corner...

I know this video is a little older now but I’m glad you went through the horror parts of this movies animation. It was immediately the first thing I’m sure a lot is noticed being that you usually don’t get a sense of fear too much from watching a kids movie. But because it’s a kids movie, it had to be more psychologically scary than practically. Which is why this animation is dare I say a masterpiece in the way it makes someone scared of a conflict/ character by just hearing the noise queues that they make. That to me is EXTREMELY video-gamey because as soon as you hear something in a video game it usually means a specific thing was done or correlates to something. Now that is excellent way of doing horror in a pg family movie because psychological can be easier to do than more legitimate horror. Really glad you made a video on this because I also hope they make use of this more in animation going forward! :)

I love this movie so much, it's truly done what other movies could never. One other thing I noticed (actually, luckyleftie on TikTok first brought it up) is that Death's weapons are not scythes, which were originally intended for harvest, but rather shotels, weapons designed for war that were able to cut down shields and yank riders off mounts. By wielding weapons of war rather than harvest, it shows he hasn't come to collect Puss's life naturally, but instead to forcefully end it himself. Ironically, the scythe is what people use when they depict the physical manifestation of Death, but again, the Grim Reaper is just there to harvest (or reap) lives at their natural time. I love how much thought they put into not only the fact that they have a character representing Death, but that Death is a character too, with, like you said, ulterior motives. They really made it into Puss in Boots The Last Wish's own little thing.

2:00 this is exactly what I aim to bring more into the 3D animation world with the show that I've been working on.
I completely agree that horror is not nearly represented enough in the animated world and HUGE amount of awesome things that an animated horror film could do compared to a live action horror film.
It's one of the key reasons I started making the show in the first place!
