Croatia : Poreč

Poreč is an ancient town situated on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia. The town is set around a harbour protected from the sea by the small island of Sveti Nikola.
Poreč was built by the Romans in around BC 2. With the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, different rulers and powers governed. In 1267 it became the first Istrian city that chose to become part of the Republic of Venice, whose rule lasted for more than five centuries. During this period, several palaces, squares and religious buildings in Venetian style were built. The population was decimated by plague at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. After the fall of the Venetian Republic, it came under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy. It became part of the Kingdom of Italy since 1918.
The major landmark of Poreč is the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Remains of Roman temples and forum can be found around Matafor Square. There are also a number of beautiful Venetian Gothic and Baroque palaces along Decumanus, the main street of Poreč old town.
