If you click on the countryballs when you enter your own territory (like with the luxembourg ball you saw) then you unlock them as a playable nation (Sorry if my english is a bit broken bc im swedish)
Tips 1:If you want to help your ally when a it's enemy country invades it (the country that invaded your ally doesn't need to be your enemy) you have to double click to go into battle 2:At diplomacy you can ask countries to become your puppet (They can request you to puppet them if you attack them enough too) but only if your power is 1.5 to 0.5 3:Your allies won't help you in war unless you're stronger than them or they are not enemies with the country you're invading 4:Countries that you see in cities are collectable countries that you have to click rapiditly to unlock (I'm pretty sure they spawn in capital cities only on some gamemodes and difficulties)
I have to correct you on the unlocking the country balls "some" can get in there capital others have to be won in the campaign and others found in obscure location

that was actually a better plan than the schlieffen plan, as far as i know, which is not much so maybe not, but since germany held up against britain and france for quite a while, they could take out russia first.

Tip: since belgium and Montenegro Both only have 1 territory, its a good Idea to attack them first, since you will have less enemies to fight in the future Next, you are gonna want to attack warsaw(russia) and Cyprus (brittain) Since warsaw has anti-tank soldiers for only 1100 money (territory next to Paris too but there its more expensive) and Cyprus has very cheap soldiers that also have a good attack.
When you’re in nightmare mode, your dice roll is very bad. Attack so most likely result in defeat. You need to attack Belgium first, keep restarting until you get a good roll. Then declare on Switzerland, Netherlands and Persia. Make alliance with Greece and attack Albania. Puppet all if you can. It is difficult to get 2 good die rolls in a row in nightmare, so don’t bother with Montenegro

I’ve played this game and all you have to do is take out some territories and use your stars until you get to 100 Max HP.
To make your allies help you at the battle you need to make sure the allie you want to call has declared war on the enemy you want to invade
If you click country balls that you're not playing with, you will unlock them. And spend 100 country coins and get them as a playable character.
If you attack Switzerland and Austria-Hungary has them as a common enemy, Austria-Hungary would accept joining the battle.
