I'm actually surprised a German Colonial Empire wasn't mentioned.
Germany itself was really large and it had what is now Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Togo, and the Bismarck Archipelago.
Our French Colonial Empire seized control 60% of Africa.
The German actually do have some territories in North Africa. They lost them

But Germany never came close to controlling all of continental Europe. They merely occupied those areas for a couple of years.
The colonies on the other hand were only sparsely populated by native tribes.
Some of them were under German control for several decades.
Namibia still has a German minority.
For Germany, it would also be a much more realistic goal to regain its colonies than than to rule over continental Europe.
Other than the former British colonies India, Canada or Australia the former German colonies are all pretty underdeveloped and poor.
They could profit from reuniting with Germany.
Namibia for example has some natural resources but lacks the financial means to exploit those resources themselves.
It takes financial investments to start a mining operation or to start producing oil.
Building infrastructure like roads is also very expensive. Better roads are a long-term investment that you can't finance with high interest loans, so many less wealthy countries can't afford building them at all.
China does that all the time. But they only want to create economic dependencies and to spread their political system.
The only way to counter China's economic imperialism would be to make a better offer.
The involvement and permanent military presence of a larger European power would also stabilize the region.
Look at Mali where it took a military intervention of the former colonial power France to push back the radical islamists.
Don't forget Palau and Nauru

2. The lack of food.

3. Bad reputation.
