The beauty of pedals is in how they can compliment amp tones, not replace them. I used to wonder why the hell I would want pedals when I have a nice amp, but then I had the epiphany of what a nice clean boost can do for a valve amp. And then how a clean boost can stack with a nice gentle overdrive. It opens up a world of tones you would never get from just an amp or just a pedal alone.

EQ's are so overlooked when it comes to shaping tone: either in front - pushing pedals - or towards the end - shaping the final product. Shaving off below the 200-300 Hz to get rid of a build up of 'rumble' and 'woofiness' - or cutting anything above 8k to dial back 'spikiness' and 'sizzle'. They're great as 'push-boxes' to the front of an amp or another pedal. Or use them as a solo-boost with a mid kick. I have owned several MXR Ten-Band EQ's with great results. +12dB to boost or -12dB of cut. I'm glad you spent some time on the EQ. Outstanding playing as usual.

When I got an HX Stomp, I found a lot of the sounds to be too bright and fizzy. The easiest/fastest solution is to change the Mic in the Cab Block. I think the Ribbon 120 Mic sounds particularly good on Strat type guitars.

Definitely enjoyed the Vlog style. Not all videos have to be a gear demo. Listening to how someone with experience approaches a problem is very instructive and helpful. A lot of gain/od/distortion pedals sound great on someone else's board WITH THEIR GUITAR, THEIR AMP, THEIR HANDS, ... but doesn't work in my setup. It's nice to hear and see how someone else uses them, but it's just not a simple matter of "Gee, I'm going to add that sound to my arsenal." Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I've came to the conclusion I'll always be searching. More options are available than I have time to try or money to buy. One thing I have been doing in recent times is trying to get the very best out of the pedals I have. It's kinda interesting when you take a fresh approach the the pedals you already have and start back for scratch on the settings and the order you place them in. I still think about something you told me at the Woodshed guitar camp. Listen with your ears and not your eyes when adjusting knobs and tone settings. Some settings may look like they are extreme but sound great. And from watching your channel I've learned that small tweaks can make a big difference. Another great video Shawn. Thank you.

if you play live in a cover band as many of us do, I find a volume pedal (in the loop) to be paramount, especially when you play a wide variety of music, if the band has good dynamics then you need to be able to control that level, and cutting volume on the instrument doesn't always work if using distortion, etc. I could get by with just my footswitch and a volume pedal if had to, but def need volume control in my situation!

Here’s something to further delay building your board. The actual board. I’m I process of switching from Pedaltrain with Velcro to a Temple board. I like the fact that you can more precisely mount your pedals and move them around by screwing and unscrewing instead of ripping them off the board. I read of a technique of putting blue painter tape on the pedal and attaching the glue modules to the taped pedal bottom. That protects the pedals if you care about resale perhaps. I don’t think painter tape would hold up for touring but in a studio it probably will. I can remove the Velcro and try it anyway. I have a backup if that doesn’t work, the 3M version of Velcro, called Dual Lock. A lot of people prefer that.

  • @macanoodough

I got a 3 pedal zoom and don't even use all of it's features. I always want the sound of the guitar to come through, bit of chorus, bit of reverb/delay (sometimes). And then. like you say, 3 presets for the crunch sounds I use and that's as far down the rabbit hole I go...
The valve amp shines through so I find the pedal doesn't matter for my tone.

  • @MrScrofulous

I mostly buy pedals for the artwork. I've had a H&K Triamp since 2004, and it pretty much makes everything else redundant. I have a Plexi, SV20, cos I just liked the idea of it. Lots of fuzz varieties that I love, and modulation that I try to like, but don't really, except for the Rotosphere.

I agree on the line 6 stuff. I've heard them sound great. I think what the problem is with the sound is the processing is not quite there with the upper harmonics (but it's getting much better every day). I had a great board with 2 Strymons (mobius & timeline), an h9, some cool drives, boosts, wah etc etc and a gigrig g2 to control it all. It weighed 50lbs and got lots of oooh and ahhs. Now I gig with a Fractal FM3/9 and I’m very happy. There’s so many great sounding options within the unit, and the sound & feel is as real as it gets IMO. I can’t imagine going back. If I was a touring pro, I couldn’t imagine dealing with pedals and amps again. Love em, but inconvenient, and not always superior in tone & feel anymore. To each their own, of course.

I have also seen the guys who have the rack systems with their peddles on these slide out shelves and everything is controlled with a footswitch system on the floor. Combinations of peddles are programmed in to the switcher. That seems like good way to go. It seems it would offer a lot of flexibility.

I hear you Gary, however I’d have a 60pound boat anchor with very little gain, although I didn’t buy my Jc120 for higain. It’s a platform for pedals and multifx. However I don’t think it was specifically built for that.
What amazed me back in the day was how good the Jc sounded with a tube driver in line on the floor. So a way to get the hopeful benefit of Solid state cleans and some tube preamp. A solution for another time, still not the same as a valve amp native. Lol Tight wires bro!

@Philthy Casual who is playing arenas anymore? Everyone I know in my area of Arkansas plays small house shows and has a good reverb and a great amp. Everything is heard and fills up the room like a monster when they want reverb. Btw, isn't the holy grail used in SO many arena players rigs over the years? They go and plug the reverb in to the front of house guy and they try their best for a good (non trebley) reverb sound. And I bet you Kelley Deal will be bringing her Afterneath to a show, no matter where she's playing at.

Shawn, I can't decide what guitars to take to a gig. I worked for a bandleader wasn't really to keen on pedalboards. To"comply" (he wrote the pay checks) so, I kept my Zendrive and delay on top of my amp on 95% of time. My tuner and channel switching pedal were there only ones on the floor.
One of the local and high paying venues has a no speaker on stage policy, and are"providing their IEMs too. Many of the guitarist playing there all use Helix or Axe Efx some player use them with regular pedals. After a couple of CZcams demos, it seems that an HX Stormp was worth a try. I've only used the Stomp live on a couple of occasions. In the context of the music I've notice is there can be a bit of unrealistic longer sustain not found in my core pedals and amp. I feel that I've barely touched all the power of the pedal. Am I getting rid of my amps and pedals? Nope. Shawn, thanks again for you informative and interesting videos. Never-less, I've been warned that a second bathroom will not be used for musical equipment storage...no matter what Shawn does!

Doesn't change anything except more gain and global presence. Otherwise a delay, wahwah and volume pedal. I'm so old school. Wouldn't mine having an Eventide effects unit for all in one deal.

I’ve been going for a less is more approach… Realizing I only use a couple different delay settings… can’t stand multi effects don’t like fiddling with them because I’m too much of a fiddler…. So now I just use two separate delay pedals… takes up a bit more space but it works perfect. But yeah I still have the full blown board… But here is great to Grab the light white guy takeoff

It depends if you want fuzz or modulation or delays or a wet dry set up

Totally agree about the HX stomp
Tone suck.. same with most volume pedals
I wonder if XTS upgrades the boss buffer on the GE-7
    Good choices

I am the worlds worst procrastinator, I've got a board started, I'm basically just rewiring my old board but may throw in 2 new pedals. LOL It's so easy to do on my Kemper Profiler and even easier on my software based Amplitube 5 Maxx Collection. I know, I'm bad. LOL

@@ShawnTubbs Wow, good background! Good job man! You know, all my life I try to play blues - but it always sounds like a punk :) I can play phrases separately with good feel and timing, understand all these tricks with substitutions and alteration. But when I put it all together - it sounds like a punk, what will you do!

Excellent video and great ideas about gear…Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!I love my Strymon Flint…and I have a Wampler Pantheon overdrive which is awesome and very versatile pedal and I use a MXR 10 band EQ (the silver one)after the Phanteon and before the Wampler Faux Tape Echo Deluxe V2 and the Flint…simple but inspiring set up…

Shawn, what is it you like about the Flint over alternatives? I ask because I’ve owned a Flint and never really loved it-as much as I wanted to. It’s just not sonically rich enough for me. Setting iconic amp tremolos aside, I found the Empress tremolo V1 or 2 is the pinnacle, sonically; however, pb real estate is an issue if for a fly rig. I’ve since migrated to the Keeley Hydra and am currently in the honeymoon phase-love the tremolo options. That said, while the reverbs are great, I ‘m still in tweak mode to get to the Spring emulation I desire. Anyway, back to the Flint, did you ever compare with the Hydra?

    • @jordandangelo180
      @jordandangelo180 Před 2 lety +2

Yes and no. Part me or knows a really good amp and one or two pedals will do the job but I still want all the pedals so oh well lol I can’t help it, I’ve always been obsessed with pedals since I was a little kid and it was only Boss and MXR and Ibanez.

Tubby is a BadAss player.... I do not use one, I use a delay and chorus in my loop, set for boost, and plug straight into my Tourmaster.....young guys just don't get it :)
