Something few ever mention about the movie, but always pops into my brain...
Cockroaches live for only about half a year. WALL-E is about 700 years old. Odds are...he's had that entire family line of cockroaches as his pets for most, if not all, of that time. He's watched millions of generations of his beloved pets die, over and over.
And still, his sense of fondness and devotion remain unfazed. That's some Zen shit right there. To witness for centuries, the futility and impermanence of life, but to still love all without condition or reservation.

Director Andrew Stanton explained why he used excerpts from Hello, Dolly! (1969) in an interview: "When I got to 'Hello, Dolly!' and I played 'Put on Your Sunday Clothes', and that first phrase 'Out there...' came out, it just fit musically... I finally realized, 'You know what, this song is about two guys that are just so naive, they've never left a small town, and they just wanna go out in the big city for one night and kiss a girl. That's my main character.' And then my co-writer, Jim Reardon, said, 'You know what, he could actually discover an old tape in the trash, and that's how he got inspired by it, and it's a great way to show that he's got a romantic slant.' So we started looking at the movie, and when I found the other song, 'It Only Takes a Moment', and saw the two lovers holding hands, I realized, 'That's a perfect way for my main character to express the phrase 'I love you' without being able to say it.'" The vacuuming robot that follows WALL-E and EVE has a robotic version of the song "Put On Your Sunday Clothes." It's the first two lines of the song's chorus in electronic form. Stanton had portrayed Barnaby Tucker in a 1980 high school production. Jerry Herman allowed his songs to be used in the film without fully realizing how or why. When he saw how they worked in the film, he claimed it was "genius".
To explore the possibilities of pure visual storytelling, Andrew Stanton and the Pixar team watched every single Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton movie, both short films and features, every day during lunch for about 18 months.

Fun fact about the Axiom dump scene.
Originally, EVE was meant to be the one in danger and on the verge of shutting down. WALL-E would have restored her by putting the lighter into her power core (right under where the plant symbol appears). He also would've had a little interaction with the WALL-As (yes that's what those big boys are called) that was kind of cute. The whole sequence was fully animated and near finished, but was ultimately changed to what's in the final film. However, the deleted scene was a special feature on the dvd.

    • @garr_inc
      @garr_inc Před rokem +92

I believe that this change was very necessary. It shows the growth of our characters. We already know WALL-E would do anything for EVE. We saw that during his care on Earth, when leaving it and when going through the stuff on the Axiom. This didn't need to be reinforced. EVE's growing affection, however, needed to be expressed, especially after she discovers how much WALL-E cared.

This is my favorite 3d animated film of all time. It just has it all: brilliant visuals, amazing music, a heartwarming love story told alongside a critique of capitalist systems (Pop Culture Detective made a great video about this, go watch it) and an environmentalist appeal that feels like it’s straight out of a Miyazaki movie.
While the first half of the movie is obviously the best part, my favorite part of the movie is near the end, when you think WALL-E is, not just dead, but gone. The movie spends so much of its time making sure WALL-E is set apart from many of his kind. He has a personality, a soul, desires and dreams. And that is the gift he brings to everything he comes across: EVE, MO and the other bots, even the humans. And oftentimes it’s done through music, the “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” showtune. So when EVE repairs him, and he not only doesn’t recognize her and treats his prized possessions like garbage (which is what he was programmed to do), EVE tries the play the showtune and there’s…nothing. Just static. The most human robot of the entire cast is reduced to the machine he was built to be. It’s one of the most painful and heartbreaking deaths in Disney history that is, thankfully reversed.

AUTO's role in the movie is a matter of debate. Whether he is a true villain preventing humans from returning to Earth because he wants control, or is merely doing everything he can to follow the orders he was given has been debatable among fans. This issue can be looked upon either way.
Due to AUTO's apparent lack of true sentience (he was always very mechanical) it is very possible he was just following his program - however, when a machine follows its program, it can easily be seen as "evil" by human beings since a being that is run purely by logic does not have the capability to understand ethics (in fact, ethics are often the opposite of logic) - this means beings that follow program often appear ruthless, authoritarian and even evil: the idea of a being void of emotion is alien to a lot of humans, and thus is seen as negative regardless of whether or not the character itself is "good" or "bad".
Another theory states that he is neither "logical" nor "ethical". However, ethics, which govern proper conduct, must always be in accordance with reason. It can be said that a rational being would interpret mankind's position in the Axiom as physically and intellectually decadent, while their return to Earth shows a realization of duty and a sense of active control over their own fate. Because such a solution is defended in this way, it can be argued as the ethically correct solution for the way humans behave.
Often, a cold and emotionless logician does not factor in some of the subjective values that must be taken into account when considering the conduct of people, but AUTO is not trying to think of the best course for humanity. Thus, he is illogical. He operates logically within the confines of his programming, but this is limited to a single mission: "stay the course," and "do not return to Earth." He only thinks of the most efficient way to keep these things true. Thus, he is not "evil" in the sense that he has malice or ill-intent for his own self-benefit. No, he doesn't think at all, he just does. He is an extension of an outdated order from centuries past. He is amoral, though his actions, not the being, are immoral because they would ultimately harm mankind.

Windows? You all must turn in your nerd cards immediately! That was the sound of a Mac booting up, not Windows! :) Also, Eve was designed with the help of a designer from Apple :)
Edit : Oops, Eric just said the design thing, maybe he can keep his nerd card ;)

I wholeheartedly agree on the theme of purpose. One of the smaller things about the film that I o so love is the fact that even though the umbrella bot and the massage bot couldn't carry out their original "purpose" they still were integral in saving humanity. The massage bot by beating up those steward bots in the corridor and the umbrella bot by hitting the plant up to the scanning platform. This showing that even though you feel like you aren't able to carry out your original purpose you still can be a very important part of something! :)

It's not Windows sound Wall-E makes when finishes charging, It's the sound Apple computers make when they are turned on.

I saw this with my now partner in New York, the first time we met in person after being friends online for several years. This is the sweetest love story. Bumbling around, desperately wanting to hold their hand and trying to be unobvious (and hence being obvious) about it. Perfectly mirrored what I was doing. Whenever I watch this, I completely forget it's an animation. It's just a beautifully written and directed movie and melds the love story and the environmental message in a way that hits home but still leave hope.

What I love about so many Pixar movies, is I feel they're timeless. They don't rely on pop-culture to define their humor or story, they're very emotionally down to earth. I remember watching Toy Story recently and it just contains within itself.
Wall-E's underlying messages in the background may one day go out of date, but ever since it's been made it's just become a more and more relevant movie from Earth's state, our consumption and surfacing reliance on tech and AI, as well as missing out on just "touching grass" and living infront of the screen a lot.
Now not that it's all doom and gloom and we should get rid of it all, it's a fast approaching future with a lot of tech and AI having potential for a lot of good, but it's a beautiful movie to remind to not just delve too far. Other than that, it's just a very charming cute movie that can be enjoyed without taking the story tone in the background into account!

The actress who plays his wife in it is Michelle Dotrice is the older sister of Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks in Mary Poppins) and their father Roy Dotrice was Hallyne the Pyromancer in GOT, wow that was six degrees of separation from Wall-E to GOT lol

Regarding the timing of "We have to go back," the season 3 finale of Lost aired on May 2007. WALL·E was released June 2008. So while Lost aired first, I don't know if it would have been enough time before for this movie to have that line as a reference since the production would have taken so long and voices are usually recorded early in that process.
