- ROAD 23 Southern Laos. It was marked on the map. Google maps recommended it. It should be ok to travel... Yeah!?
That's what we thought... Little did we know this was a big part of the Ho Chi Mihn Trail.

One of the most random adventures I have ever been on in Laos.. Road 23. The Lao people. The Lao villages. The road that just is not there!! Well, parts of the way. A road that follows creek beds. The bridges over the banghiang River are "no good" Bombed! Think Ho Chi Minh trail!
I must visit!

Thanks for travelling! Great video! I'm waiting for part 2!!!
Hahaha I think they were washed away. In Pt2 I point out tree trunks up on top of those Bridge pylons and how high the water comes up over the embankment.
Cheers mate

@@nickhubbard3671 Awesome find there Nick. You are right actually. There is two bridges there. Didn't notice the second one until we were down on the ferry. It was hidden from view when I was standing on the bank. It was off in the distance and I couldn't see how old it was. The photo of the new bridge under construction is how it looks today, with a tree trunk on top of it.. lol It didn't last long.
This is amazingly interesting.
Big scary farang with a fire stick haha how cool you find that village in no man's land, im envious
Very nice video ..I really enjoy it .Keep on rolling !!!
👍 strong 👍
Amazing ride and villages.... Excellent to watch, but I'm glad I'm just watching!
As I watched I was reminded of my time in Thailand at Udorn in 1966-67 when we used to deliver AV gas to remote air fields. Dirt roads most of the way and lots of small farm villages. I love seeing the ladies with the pipes really brings back good memories..
Fantastic journey, showing the beautiful people of Lao
Just so much to see and take in with this amazing video.......definitely one to watch again with the ads, Just wonderful! 👍👍😊😊
Great Video!
another good video you 2 ... keep them coming , cheers

Amazing place or village .. those kids are scare of you but interesting about you too Todd
Nice Vid Todd, villages always interesting, beaut big mango trees ,offering nice shade. You definitely picked the correct weather to travel that route.Once you entered Savannakhet, ( 40:30) landscape changed somewhat, and the infamous Ho Chi MInh Trail.

Wow
Brings back memories of dirt roads in Xieng Khouang and crossing a ford in the river during rainy season. Nerve wracking when the driver got out to check just how deep the river was.
My Best friend country, next year want to visit.
Great video of an excellent adventure. Thanks guys.
Amazes me how the Ho Chi Minh Trail was built to deliver materiel and reinforcements to South Vietnam and was bombed nonstop. It's now a beautiful area
Thank you Todd for showing the beaten paths of Road 23, the Ho Chi Minh trails
Glad you enjoyed Jack 😉
I like the villages the way they are designed... functional for living
I think you topped the Leyland Brothers on this one Todd, fantastic work, I suspect any Aussie 4WD enthusiast would drooling

Road 23 - me thinks it’s a track 🤔 what would we do without google maps , Amazing you could get internet - impressed
Great video as always - just warm people - don’t have a lot but they content - Thanks Todd the scary farang 😃👍🙏🍻🇦🇺😎
I never really thought about it till after this trip, but without tv, there's a good chance most of those little ones had never seen a real life Farang before lol 😝
Incredible hey
Cheers mate 👍
Grouse video mates, never boring, so much to see , rough road , poor nee nee 😂 she's just gold mate❤
She's a keeper 👌😋
Great video! Looking forward to the sequel 😁 Fair play making through route 23. Super rough and Sandy in many places. It’s a cool stretch of the old Ho Chi Minh trail. One of the most bombed places on the planet. It’s Interesting to see some of the corbeled sections still exist to this day. I did it on a big 250kg Africa Twin motorbike. Not the ideal tool for the job lol! Got a proper work out picking it up after falling multiple times. Thank god it was the dry season at the time. Took me all day to get from Salavan to the bombed out bridge. Then had to cruise into Xepon in the dark. Fun times 😁
Fun ..
Good gutsy driving Todd.
Hey todd Mike and mall asked hows it looking there haha, answer ask the Leyland brothers, should read ask the lao couple lol
👍👍 Come for watching video ☺️
Great driving mate!!! Very rough roads.
Cheers
Fantastic trip Todd, have you ever thought of putting a winch on the Truck.
Good thing is, they drive on the good side off the road. Good road to drive with a Land Cruiser. Look at the errosion....
Now that's a girl of Windows Shopping I'd not heard of ... will it catch on in The West ...lol. Worse roads than outback Oz. Thanks for the adventure journey Todd. Bushyboy Oz.
Haha the road is good compared to what it's like in Pt2 😝
Glad you enjoyed mate
5:00 Neenee "We not ask people first, we just keep going with map." No matter what continent you're on, a man will never stop and ask directions.
Hahaha yep 🙄
Whoa….that was some insane road trippin…..and your right ….lucky it wasn’t any rain
Haha you wait for pt2! Gets crazy! Only just found out why... it was part of the Ho Chi Mihn trail. See the "pinned" comment at the top. Has a link to this roads story 👌
🤣 Vintage video of your adventure in Lao, ay Todd. Just loved it. Feel like I’m there with you and NeeNee. I can smell the dried musty earth, kinda cool-ish ~25 Celsius since it’s February. Can’t wait to see part 2. I will follow your road map when I tour the country myself with my family, buying up as much traditional home spun fabric to make sinn as available.
Great video! Better have a full tank, a spare and a winch on that road. Love that mango tree village
...add a chainsaw after watching part two.
Make your vids as long as you like, i enjoy em all m8.
That's the kind of driving that when you're done you pat the hood of your vehicle and say thank you for not stranding me.
Serious case of "Walk About" adventure tick buddy...
Great video .. most people never get to see how many rural people in SE Asia live .. thanks for that. I love those kinds of roads.
Hey Todd .. I was wondering how that Chevy is holding up because first of all those roads are hard on any vehicle but when I arrived in Thailand about 12 or 13 years ago I investigated different vehicle manufacturers and General Motors had a terrible reputation in Thailand and in fact Chevrolet has withdrawn from Thailand .. closed up all their dealerships. I have not heard any complaints nor seen any servicing information on any of your vids. Truck seems to be doing okay. Can you get it serviced in Laos.
You and NeeNee please keep up the great work and I hope soon tourism can open up again
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much. I'm glad you liked our adventure. 👍
I loved watching every minute of this trip! Although the terrain looks challenging in some places, it's beautiful. That part Neenee mentioned about the house windows and boobs had us laughing. Laos never ceases to amaze us.😊👍
Haha yeah the things she comes out with sometimes 😅
Thanks Van 👍
That is one hell of an image of “window shopping.”🤣 Now, when someone talks about going to the malls or some fancy outlets for “window shopping”, I won’t be able to resist breaking out a smile. If it’s NeeNee’s description of window shopping, now that I would certainly like to join. 😂
Grahame Connors. " Mango Shade ". Forget the name of the album.
This is such an awesome video. The wife and I will probably do something similar on the Viet side of the border, but I don't think it's quite as rural.
@@HungNguyen-nw9uy Thanks! We live in the mountains now, but I love the ocean too. We'll probably stay in Da Nang as our home base and travel all over SE Asia.

Friday night stuck at home geeez at least the footy is on I guess, go Panthers ,
By the way. The new phone camera is astounding! Wish I could show you
Incredibly interesting on geographical and anthropological dimensions!
Amazing journey it is.
The way Neenee pronounces "Australie" at 27:11 is directly related to the French way to pronounce it, this is so interesting to hear how French words percolated in the Lao and Vietnamese vocabulary that is still in use :-)
Hahaha it's funny you say that.. Usually when a Lao person asks me where I'm from, that's how I pronounce it now. Whenever I say "Australia" they just repeat "Australie" so I save them the time now 😋
Thanks for watching

Wow, road 23 is a safari road with villages planted here and there. I find this journey to be very exciting to me. I know with my bad back it would be a road I would have to wear a brace to support my back. Poor Neenee is like a salad getting tossed in there Todd, I could imagine how your doing behind the wheel. I just love some of those areas you were driving on and others I was wondering how the hell you got through or across some of those areas. What and heck of a drive mate, look forward to the next video. I just want to let you know I have no problem how long the video, you are catching so much and even you and Neenee are catching boobs hahaha, chill, chill with boobs, just to darn funny. You both had me rolling with that one. safe travels.
Hahaha great adventure alright Rodger. Only something I learnt yesterday after uploading this video, some of those bridges were out because Road 23 was a big part of the Ho Chi Mihn Trail. This will become more apparent in Pt2, but at the time, we just thought it was a dodgy road. Now I really want to drive this road again, and be sure to stop at more villages and look around. In pt2, parts of this road are nothing but a Trail near covered in undergrowth. It needs to be seen before it disappears.
Chill chill with boobs hahaha. How about Neenee's window shopping story 😂👍
Yeah I did at that, I think some of the towns have some nice widow shopping for sure. Told the wife what it was about and the boobs story with the village lady, she was shocked but in a funny way thinking I was full of it. I think that is really cool you found out it was the Ho Chi Mihn trail and the history behind it. But then you know I love my history and ancient cities, temples, anything about our past. You know Todd, I am really looking forward to that next video so I can have my eyes peeled to catch something off to the sides. So when you think of going again you should give a heads up video and hell, make 5 45 minute videos if you have to and don't forget to read up some more before you go, you might find a diamond in the rough along the way. Thank mate for the laugh 😆and the adventure🚙.

Sawann means paradise/heaven... some people say Sawann instead of ( Savannakhet) :-)
An interesting thing to look at on Google sat view. Long sections that look pretty good, with bits of shit from time to time, probably bombed out river crossing areas as suggested by Nick Hubbard. Then you get to the provincial boundary and its is totally rooted. Many are unaware that Uncle Ho's trail was many (sometimes 10s of) kilometres wide and changed at short notice due to bombing, defoliation etc.
You're absolutely right about once we got to the provincial border. The track really did turn to shit, as you will witness in part 2. Crossing from Salavan into Savanakhet, it was like somebody had hit a switch the change was that quick. I was totally unaware what significance road 23 had until Nick brought it to my attention. Now i want to do it again before it is gone for good.
@@NowinLao History is everywhere, ancient or modern. Have you been to the Plain of Jars yet? One of my bucket list places.

It's not over yet 😝
Yeah sure, there are much worse, but is the road to your cousins place a main road with a number and recognized on Google maps?
@@NowinLao it's off of highway 12, the road towards thafalang. But pass it, there's a village, that's where most my cousin at. But they used the other road which was longer and alot more bumper. My friend Amaly family owns Laos Noodles Soup off highway 12
Dude, your on the dark side of the moon when it comes to this road...
You've never wondered what was on the dark side.. ? 👌😁
What can go wrong you have power poles in the middle of the road. Just follow the yellow dirt road.
While traveling in Tajikistan we made a wrong turn on to what we thought was the right road. Took 12 hours to do 100 miles. Do you think so of those people you meet aren't just thinking 'why didn't they take road 23. Would have been easier?'
This is road 23 😐

Omg Todd! Excellent video,,great docu style format. It may seem the same as always,,but it's always different. Todd,,if I hadn't already come to love Lao before this,,,I'd definitely love it after this vid. Chill, chill with boobs,,,check,,, window shopping for boobs ,,, double check! Lol that was funny. I'd actually drive that road by choice,,but I've always had a 4x4 car. Lo if I win the lotto,,,I'm gonna buy you a 4x4 ute,,,maybe an old land rover or cruiser. That road ,,in the beginning, it looked like they had started working on it ,,then just stopped,,several monsoon seasons ago,,or maybe they figured the cost for 4587 bridges and gave up because of that. Lol who knows? You can definitely tell those villages aren't on the tourist path,,,the kids, especially in the 2nd village were pretty scared of farangs. In the 2nd I even saw some kids racing upstairs to get away. Lmao,,ya boogeyman man, you! Lol I'd like to return with a dozen boxes of cookies. There was definitely a horde of kids in the 1st village. Well buddy,,thank you for a superb video. I loved it! You and Neenee take care,,,Ttyl,,,Marlon

The cash poor countries, those countries who don't depend on cash, are amongst the happiest countries. Money breeds greed which ultimately breeds misery. Those people have never needed money, they live off the fat of land. It's something we who live in rich countries are so far away from that we can't understand their joy. Shame on us
Because they have no money, we call them poor. It is us, the ones with money that are poor. We don't see their riches.
