      So many 'Who Am I" questions he got with just birth and death dates. And he would give a full answer including the middle name.
      One I remember went like this:
      (Tony) Born in 1947 I entered Congress in -
      (Cary) -(pause) James (pause) Danforth (another pause) Quayle.
      (Tony)- Correct.

    I remember watching this. I had just got married and we visited my parents in law. My mother in law was obsessed by the show and we had to sit in silence while she tried to beat the competitors.

      My dad was the same. My mum was pushing him to go on the show. He finally entered and got it.
      He was on a winning streak, about 4 nights, and ended up being beaten by cary. The best person to be beaten by.

    Cary Young v David Bock is just about peak quizzing in Australian TV history. Virginia Noel had been at that level too but I think she was more focussed on her medical career by the time these championships came around. Throw in Fran Powell and you've got probably the four best Australian quizzers of the 1980s.

    What's going on here at 2:20 the question shouldn't have been read out at all after he buzzed in. They're all doing it though, buzzing early and hoping to hear a few more mords of the question to help. The bible question was so obvious though as he buzzed literally before the question began.

    • @frankmat
      @frankmat Před 5 lety +7

      You would probably find even if this was today that the majority of Sale of the Century finalists would be male. We aren't just talking about smart people we are talking about the best of the best making it onto the show. Like it or not the studies show that when it comes to IQ males and females are almost identical in score.... but the bell curve is much more pronounced for men.... meaning that there are more intelligent men than women at the top but also more stupid men than women at the bottom.

      Bring back Sale of the Century. In regard to OP's comment, it would be at least mildly interesting to see the most elite male contestant compete against the most elite female contestant. Of course these days the genders don't stop there do they, would have to have a panel of 76 different contestants for true equality and diversity.
