This song was WRITTEN IN TWENTY MINUTES as a response to a question about their creative process, from a reporter that was traveling with the band, while in transit. It was refined in rehearsal, upon arrival at the next venue and performed THAT NIGHT, live.

Led Zep got the bigger share of the love back then but Deep Purple on a bad night could hammer it down like no one could , as you say all the members took it to another level and Lord played that Hammond B-3 to shreds, he was a butcher on that thing . He came up with so many styles and bizarre sounds,, sometimes it sounds like a diesel engine rumble at idle ..

Pink Floyd took a liberty by charging 18,000 of us £1 at Earls Court in 1973 when presenting Dark Side Of The Moon...
So 3 World Class Groups at major London venues for £2 and Creedence Clearwater Revival was also 25 Pence at The Royal Albert Hall:)

    *DEEP PURPLE fun fact:*
    ----------------
How's this for an interesting statistic... Deep Purple has put out at least one album in each of the last seven (7!!) decades that charted at #20 or higher, somewhere in the world. The first to reach a Top 20 spot was released in 1968, and the most recent was released in 2020. Each of those points is remarkable alone, but combined it's absolutely awe-inspiring!
Starting in the late 60s, through 2021, Deep Purple has released 22 studio albums, the last of which just dropped November, 2021.

Hair slinging is a type of "head space" for serious musicians. And when they close their eyes, they've literally left their bodies, lol. I love watching them come back down to earth at the end of a song. Plus, Ian KNEW he was sexy and played on that fact.

  • @nickfilleul3463

This is arguably the greatest live album of all time. The energy, the musicianship, the arrangements (which they changed each time they performed live), the place, the time, the songs and the often unmentioned genius of the sound engineer. The planets aligned for the album "Made in Japan" and the back story to the album and it not being wanted or desired by the band (live albums were almost non existent at the time) makes it all the more remarkable. If you do nothing else dig out Made in Japan and listen to the whole album. Like Dark Side of the Moon it is a monster and you will be bewildered as to which track to choose as favourite.

The #1 big Purple song for reactors is the 1970 live version of "Child In Time." Hope you can get to that, if you haven't already.
Welcome to the trinity, brother! There's so much good stuff here for ya.

Live vs Studio is one of those things where both have advantages and disadvantages so both are important. With this track as an example this live version is fantastic, the band is so proficient and practiced at playing and playing together and it’s incredible to watch them too, it really allows for some spontaneous musical moments. The studio version allows the band to really pay attention to the details of a song and fine tune it, I really like the “industrial sound” of Jon Lord’s organ in the studio version. Also I really enjoyed this reaction and how you are getting to know the band’s members and taking into consideration the musical landscape of the time. Thank you

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 Před rokem +2

As a long time musician and music lover, obviously there are no Ironclad rules but my general approach I would suggest to people that are new to something like this? I would say I always listen to the studio Cup first and get to know it as we all used to know it hearing it on the radio buying the album all that stuff. Cuz now this stuff was available forever you know and then later if you really like a certain song well then go check out the live version of it it's a flush out your image of it and there's another advantage to this as well. We just listen to the studio cut, and don't pick one with some stupid video with it, that way your attention is 100% on listening and not divided out with Video Entertainment and it's just the way it works is when you're looking at something you simply cannot pay full attention to the music. But once you get the idea well then why not, go watch live thing and imagine wow what would have been like to been there you know? Anyway that's just my two cents. No rules obviously.

YEA man lets go and dude Richie showed us why they were the loudest band in ROCK when this teenager went to Music hall in 73...Ian was the only left handed drummer I knew of, as I was one as well...the Deep laid down some heavy organ with Ian just moving the beat on && on. where Zep had that memphis blues element infused into their jams, but Deep Purple had the fast tempo that the girls loved...keep on rockin, Lad

And yes, their studio was a step or two below this, as good as those versions were. I don't remember much of the Burn tour I got to see of the Mark III line-up... This is a great Purple Song, and the base of speed metal, as lately was known, the solos are incredible and yes Deep Purple is a band to enjoy on stage, not on the studio, they sound so much better in concert, because they were made for this.
It's not the same with other bands, Zeppelin for example sounds much better in the studio, because they made so dressed up songs with lots of guitars, and other instruments they cannot play in concert. So DEEP PURPLE is the band to enjoy live.

Long hair was a "hippie" thing, in the late 60's and early 70's. "Hair Band" was an 80's thing, kind of an extension or evolution of "Glam Rock." "Big Hair" was athing with guys and gals, in rock and elsewhere. Check out the movies from that era, lol! But yeah, Highway Star is made for swingin' yer head in rhythm, hair or not! Pity we only HEARD Blackmore's sweetly killer shred solo here and didn't SEE much of it! TF, cameraman? LOL. But it's all good. The alchemy of this band is unreal.

I enjoy your reactions to Deep Purple and the care you take in getting to know the band members as well as the little things you notice in the music. You really do have a good ear for music. Also you asked what Ian Paice was doing on the drums at one point. It’s a drum roll and drummers use it to accent a part in the musical piece or when switching time signatures or or just anytime they feel the need for a drum fill. Deep Purple, Zep, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper were my go to bands in high school. Regarding the hair, they were not part of the ‘hair band’ craze in the 1980’s. Those were the long haired bands who ratted and used a lot of hairspray in their long hair. The bands in the 60’s and 70’s with long hair actually started with the Beatles. The Beatles were said to be mop tops because of their long bangs and hair that went down their necks a little bit. Then bands just started letting their hair down. 😂and it got longer and longer till it was longer than some of us girls. And we all loved it! I love rock music from the 60’s starting with the Beatles through now. I enjoy other types of music too. Music speaks to your soul, your very being, and it brings us all together.

The caption of the clip just made me curious WHAT version of Highway Star it would be...and yes, it would be the one Made In Japan!!! The reaction to which is almost never ending RIGHTLY SO cos there's just so much there! And at that sort of frantic speed to boot - it's just awesome. At that time, every one of the quintet was simply top notch in his field. You doubt me you haven't listened.
The one little thing though, is that the audio and the visual are not identical here. There sadly exists no footage of them performing Highway Star on the 2nd Made In Japan show, only from the 1st one but that didn't appear on the record. So they backed it with a clip of the same song from earlier 1972 somewhere in Mainland Europe, it think it was Copenhagen - welcome to correct me if I'm wrong - having had to iron out some minor synchronity inconsistencies. Well, as such, great work. And the music speaks for itself.

And btw, Purple isn't a "hair band". Those started in the 80s. We just had great hair in the 60s and 70s 🤣

Ritchie is the best. Great with Ronnie J Dio. Stargazer 😮 You've inspired me to get hair extensions!

Every guy had long hair in the early and mid 70’s, where I went school if you got a short back and sides you wanted to be joining the military😂 then along came punk and everything changed.

Not well known today was a band called Mountain. They went hard too and most folks only ever hear one song, Mississippi Queen. That is a great great song of course. But there were quite a few others.

I love this reaction. constantly replying the best, most intense parts, reminds me of when i first heard it. Check out the Made in Japan record in it's entirety. it's probably the best live rock record ever and features the best versions of many DP classics.

Deep Purple at The: Royal Albert Hall debuting this...25 PENCE and Led Zeppelin around 1975 at Empire Pool, Wembley: 75 PENCE.
Pink Floyd took a liberty by charging 18,000 of us £1 at Earls Court in 1973 when presenting Dark Side Of The Moon...
So 3 World Class Groups at major London venues for £2 or Under 3 Dollars..and Creedence Clearwater Revival was also 25 Pence at The Royal Albert Hall:)

Can you imagine that we “old” people are disappointed about the current music scene
The grammies: fast forward 5 minutes, the last time something good came out were : the Alabama shakes, got their CD right away, you should check them out: their hit-song: don’t wanna fight.

I really enjoyed your reaction video, to me the riff at the end of the organ solo reminds me of “I’m Crying” by the Animals.

…Ritchie Blackmore was a role model for a lot of people and wanted to play like him!! …Also many famous musicians!! Jimmy Page liked to copy other guitarists (that's what he's known for in the music scene!) and was very jealous of R. Blackmore... !

Get you a wig to do some hair slinging. Lol. It’s fun.
I’m going to suggest ‘Woman from Tokyo’ or ‘Pictures of Home’
Deep Purple was headliner of my first concert in ‘74.

Top tier musicians in Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmore is my GOAT, follow him next to his next group Rainbow ("Stargazer" their epic classic is a must listen). Great group with vocals from Ronnie James Dio who later on went on to front Black Sabbath after Ozzy. Make sure you check out Dio with Black Sabbath as well, I actually like him better with Sabbath than Ozzy. "Heaven & Hell, "Sign of the Southern Cross" and "I" are great songs.
