Like computer technology, I enjoy watching stories about people who can keyboard quickly, because I use a microcomputer and cannot get along well without it. I wish I could try your exercise myself. I love your show, Janice. My keyboarding speed was from 70 to 108 words per minute with accuracy, but during job interviews. Unfortunately, I did not become hired at any of those firms. Not even a shirt, suit and a tie could convince those interviewers that I was the right candidate for the job. Even today, I still have my old typewriting skills that became my keyboarding skills. I am using my skill to keyboard on a microcomputer, right in the privacy of my home. I am looking forward to reviving my typewriting service.
I understand everything, but my wpm is 80-100,and i'm just a gamer. I think i need something berween 140-160 to be complete.
@@krak3n852 You go with your "great" self! I do enjoy keyboarding, and that is a reason I keyboard slower than during my employment tenure.
@@krak3n852Just be yourself and your juror, too. In whatever you do, just do what you feel and feel what you do. Thank you for typing to me. Happy Keyboarding!
@@krak3n852 The only good reason I know of for keyboarding at speeds as high as 160 words per minute is when taking dictation or transcribing information to be keyboarded. I am proud to mention to you that I do not look at my keys when I use this microcomputer. However, I have looked at the computer screen while keyboarding. Thank you for typing to me.

My advice: try it. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Personally I’ve built enough muscle memory to consistently use both pinkies for various tasks. Just take this as a lesson for touch typing as a whole. Follow the recommended convention for touch typing such as using this finger for that key but if you find a way that is more comfortable, do that instead and built that muscle memory. Wow, I am impressed with how fast you are typing on a QWERTY keyboard. I was surprised to hear that you said you don't use your left pinky for anything except the occasional shift key but while watching this video I did notice now and then that you use your pinky for the "A" key occasionally.
You are 100% correct about creating muscle memory. I am a broadcast captioner and we rely on our muscle memory to "chord" keys on our steno machines to reach our high speeds of well over 225 wpm. A normal speaking individual talks at around 180 wpm and when someone starts speaking quickly or multiple people start talking we have to be able to burst to sometimes 280+ wpm.
BTW, I love the kitty cats on your keyboard. Did it come with those or are they stickers that you put on yourself? I love them! 🙂

Holy cow. I have recently been looking into colemak and was explaining it to my wife thus weekend, and I said the exact same thing: "It's weird, I can type 100 wpm, but if you asked me to label a keyboard, I don't think I could do it."
Blew my mind when just now you said the exact same thing! Maybe in hindsight that is a lot less crazy than it sounds? Like ultimately we're just memorizing where to move to press a letter, and bypassing the entire process of seeing the letter, visualizing where the letter is on the keyboard, and determining which finger to hover over that key and press it. It's purely reflex, so you can't label a layout because you're not thinking of it like a map, but more like playing an instrument. Kind of cool.

How interesting! It's funny to me cause I don't use the standard typing form either, I think it's called 10 finger typing? Like you I use most of my fingers in the regular position but I rarely use my pinkies. So it's good to see you don't literally have to follow standard placement to type fast. I finally got a mechanical keyboard which I have wanted for so long. I love the way it feels for one, but I feel like I can type faster because it gives audible feedback the key was pressed. I feel so much better knowing you don't actually have to use your pinky very often in order for it to still be considered touch typing. In school they're like "lol if you dont use the exact fingers on the keys you're supposed to it's no longer touch typing and you're gonna type slower". As I've been typing over the years I gradually stopped using my right pinky and thought "oh crap does this mean I'm losing to touch typing?" So I've been trying to go back to using it again and it's just made my typing slower cause I keep getting confused about my hand position and having to look at the keyboard XD I know if I kept trying to use it more often I would get faster again but I don't have the time or patience 🤣 I have university no-stop and if I dont type as fast as the lecturers are speaking I fall behind really quickly 🤣 so thank you for this video!! Your nails are really nice and so is your keyboard!
Learning the basics of typing and then getting better by daily use (forcing yourself to type correctly instead of looking at the keyboard or getting sloppy) is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. I know for me it was life changing. SUPER interesting video! 👍

On the first two points, I personally felt that it would be more of a personal preference whether people would be better if they used their pinky fingers. Maybe if they're using Dvorak keyboards, then using the pinky fingers might just be an easier advantage, considering the fact that their layouts allows you to move your fingers lesser, hence with the use of pinky fingers will be a great advantage. For instance, there's this legend by the name of NothisisJohn, if you watch his video, his pinky fingers is always in place and ready to hit the keys as needed. And he can still hit at least 150wpm and above, but seems like when he uses Qwerty with the same manner, his wpm drops (but do take note that he isn't a Qwerty typist).
As for the second point, I do agree, because when I type, I tend to rely on my fingertips a lot. There were times where I could've hit 100wpm, but my fingers slipped due to long fingernails and it can be really frustrating...
