I worked for macblo in 1978 at Canadian White Pine (it's all condos now)still have a retirement card from IWA 1-217 back when you could own a home and have a life here before Wall Street and Bay Street wrecked the world
Oh, no! They just keep going and going! There's even an old UH-14 over here, still running, I think, but it was parked when I saw it. The UH-181 is the preferred backspar, along with the Cat 235. More rugged than the EX-400.
Lots of our stuff was only used on the coast of British Columbia. I think some of our old iron went to your neck of the woods recently, though, so keep your eyes open for it! Lots went to NZ, as well.
I guess the good thing (or bad, depends how you look at it) about those old cable loaders, snorkels and large yarders is that you can't buy them new so if you need one you have to keep the old ones going.
Chapman put most of the early Hitachi roadbuilders together. Installed the guarding, etc. Does yours have the link type thumb, or the direct acting thumb?
No, I meant does the hydraulic thumb have the link, like the one on the UH-14-2 backspar. It allows the thumb to close even with the bucket fully open. Lots of the old roadbuilders had them, but you don't see them much these days. Gangesex says that the 181 was only built from '84 to '87, so that narrows it down.
Believe it or not, the UH-181 is supposed to be going back into the bush! The 235 has even had its gantry removed, so its life must be finished. The 7230 is pretty tired, so it probably won't be going anywhere soon. But you never know! The orange 181 that was in a couple of my 1990 videos is still going as a backspar, I'll try to get a picture of it.
Okay, I'm trying to watch your video now, but it could take HOURS on dial-up. That type of thumb is rare these days, but I see Kimchiman was running a machine with one, and Gangesex has one, too.
Cool,Thanks Clint,so that was your Grandfather that ran the commisary eh..........i worked there a bit in 1980,and visited Don a few times in the 80s............Trying to remember the old fella that ran the old line grade shovel...........i swamped for him a few times...........GREAT pictures Clint..........Thank You for Posting them!!
None of them really ring a bell,.............but maybe Chester..........Where is Your uncle John now?...........sure it was him i worked with............We blew a snag one time, and the damn thing never came down,we waited and waited, finally we went back in to see about blasting it again.............well the damn thing came down while we were close to it.............we both dove in different directions..............was a 6-8 foot drop to the ground in the fell and bucked............crappped myself almost that day, thought the show was over............lucky neither of us got clobbered.
Thank you! So nice to hear that people enjoy my pictures, it inspires me to take more.
Some really nice trucks.

Good old red and white worked at Eve Division from 1980 to 2005
Great company to work for

My Dad was running a 181 once, and the stick started coming in on its own. Nothing he did would stop it! Smacked the boom with the bucket.
Great stuff!
Smart man! Farming is probably much more stable than logging these days, most of the coastal operations are shut down now.

Thanks for the old backspars, too bad their just rusting away. How about the old cypress loader is that in use or parked for good?

Whats the story on the 7230C Loader? Is it still in use or has it been put out to pasture?
Nope, it was always a QC Division machine. We had the Y12, it came from somewhere else. And the Y03, but it was a 144.

What's the soundtrack artist/name?
Does it still have CHAPMAN decals on it?

Well done. THANKS!
