  • In this video I will compare a couple of popular add on type dash cams for aftermarket Android navigation radios that plug in to a special USB port on the back. They all have some pros and cons. In the end I went with the most expensive one, the Atoto AC-44P2 due to the better compression of the MP4 video files and a more stable app on the head unit. Below are links to all 3 cameras (Amazon Paid Links). They are listed from most to least expensive but just note that the Joying and Eonon cameras are the same thing, so it would be wise to buy the less expensive Eonon if you prefer that style.

I chose the Atoto, primarily because I installed the Atoto S8 head unit. After watching your video, I think the Atoto has a somewhat better picture. Thanks for the video comparing the three brands.

Have you had any battery drain issues with both the head unit and dash cam installed?
I had mine just sleep when the vehicle was off for over a year with no issues. I installed the atoto Dash Cam today, but switched it to full power down out of caution.

@@ifpo238I first bought an Eonon head unit for my GMC but had to replace it because it was dreadfully slow.
Immediately upgraded to the Atoto S8 and haven't considered anything else since. It's a good buy imo.

Great upload! I clicked it to see how my Atoto 1080p worked before I installed it on the windshield. I couldn't get the microSD card to work. Then I saw in your vid that you have to scroll up for the settings button. 🔘 It works now. ✅

Thanks for the camera review. I would not have considered file type and compression, just maximum memory card size. It looks like the Atoto is the winner in both regards.

About connection issues, did you chech in USB settings on that radio if you have the option for high band-width optimization for HD USB enabled? It's not named exactly like I said, but kinda. You have to get into Radio settings-->Factory Settings-->USB Settings and enable usb 2.0 on all ports and enable checks for "USB HD optimiztion". You have to find out the right factory password for your device. Sometimes the password is on the radio manual but others don't. There are a lot of pages where you can find all or most common ones. Luckly 2 of 3 android radios that I have on each car have the same password (8888), but one of them had a different one (1983), but searching and trying I was able to get into the settings. Also, there are some extra features such auto-start apps (like the dashcam's app) when radio boots up.

Yes. In the recording tab in the settings there is a slider to increase the brightness level. You can play with it to see what works best for day/night conditions.

I couldn't get a cheap one that supported GPS. Does the ATOTO one support it? In the end, I figured it was too fiddly to save a video while in motion, so I ended up getting a standalone Garmin unit that had buttons and voice commands.

Hi Jack. I want to easily sync my recorded footage to Google Photos so that I don't have to remove the SD card from the camera. I could get my 4G enabled Android unit to do that.
Have you come across any USB for Android dash cams that can be recorded directly on the Android device?
Failing that, any whose SD card files can be read direct from Android file manager instead of only being able to be viewed using the camera's proprietary app thanks?
    Best regards. Mick.

    • @JackofAllMasterofNone
      @JackofAllMasterofNone  Před rokem +1

I haven't found any that do that. It's kind of stupid that you can't at least transfer a saved video from the SD card in the camera to the head unit. I have no idea why they haven't built that in to the program. The reason it doesn't record directly to the head unit is because USB 2.0 isn't fast enough to handle the data and also do other functions such as Android auto or apple CarPlay.

Nice comparison! I have the Joying DVR camera and I have the same problems with the GPS coordinates and the speed indications.
Can the ATOTO camera record coordinates and speed?
Also, which one is better in reading the plate information of other cars and how do they compare at night?

Pretty much every dashcam regardless of the manufacturer uses the same camera sensor. That means that everyone one of them pretty much have the same crappy quality when it comes to capturing a license plate number. Linus did a very good video on this..

Well my opinion is my opinion..... As far as the video quality.
Also, none of the cameras provide any way for you to transfer the video off the of the camera, such as being able to save the video to the head unit where it could easily be sent wherever you need it. On all of them you have to physically remove the SD card and put it in a computer to transfer the video. There are better options out there and one of them will be the topic of a video I will be releasing soon.
