This movie was an Italian remake of Akita Kurpsawa's Javanese Samaurai film Yojimbo.
Due to copyright infringement this movie didn't get released until the lawsuit was settled.
I highly recommend watching the original.
"For a Few Dollars More" is my favorite of the trilogy.
Eastwood's most popular western is likely "The Outlaw Josey Wales." And some of his best early efforts were the "Dirty Harry" movies. But I believe his most outstanding film was "Kelly's Heroes. "
I like all three of the "Man with No Name" trilogy, but "The Good, The Bad and The ugly" has a lot of good point. As been pointed out already, "Dirty Harry movies are awesome, especially the first ones, and "Dirty Harry" also has social commentary of the Era, and "Magnum Force" plays into that as well. I simply LOVE "Kelly's Heroes" and everyone invloved so that is a great watch!
If you want early Clint, I think his first direction was "The Eiger Sanction", and you also have him in "Play Misty For Me". There is just so many great films with him.
If you want Clint Eastwood Westerns: "Hang 'Em High" and "High Plains Drifter" as well as "Pale Rider".
There's also a comedy western called a fistful of dynamite that is kinda based off this movie it's also worth watching. Josey Wales or pale rider is probably clints best western movie.

@@kickstart-1.3 some of his earlier stuff is based on Kurosawa movies but the directing is very different. Kurosawa was very influenced of Shakespeare.

The German actress who played Marisol (Marianne Koch) was 33 in 1964 when the movie was made, she is now aged 91... You'll enjoy the next two ... great reaction Dawn
Yes, there was a mixture of German, Italian, Spanish and American actors in all 3 movies. A truly international cast.
Director Sergio Leone based "A Fistful of Dollars" on the Japanese film "Yojimbo", Directed by Akira Kurosawa. When Kurosawa saw Fistful he wrote Leone and said "I like what you did with my movie. Pay me." Not an exact quote, but that was the gist. When you see "Yojimbo", which was made in 1961 and in Black and White, you will see the same storyline.
In my opinion "A Fistful of Dollars" is an adaptation done right. Leone kept what worked in a western from "Yojimbo" and changed what didn't.
Kurosawa was a big fan of westerns. His movie The Seven Samurai was meant to be an homage to American westerns.
@@musashimiyamoto586 Doesn't change the fact that 'Fistful' is a good adaption. Just watch 'Last man standing' to see a bad one. I barely remember watching that one.
Sure, the original is better, I'm not questioning that, but as far as adaptations go? It's a good one.
@@musashimiyamoto586 On the other hand, Kurosawa was no stranger to adapting stuff himself, like some of Shakespeare, sure they also lost something, but as far as adaptions go they were great as well.
Also, like adaptions of his work, you could watch them and be well entertained.
Though how much the first movie of a certain franchise took from 'Hidden Fortress'... better don't tell fans of that franchise. Or what else that franchise 'borrowed' from.
Yeah, "Star Wars" wouldn't be the same without Kurosawa. Even George Lucas says so. Just style, not story line, although there was a "princess" involved.@@Dreamfox-df6bg
If you like Clint Eastwood (and who doesn't?) take a look at "The Eiger Sanction", a great Eastwood movie.
The Japanese version, Yojimbo, of this Dashiell Hammett novel, Red Harvest, which was released a few years earlier, is definitely worth a watch, as well as other Aikira Kurosawa movies.
Bruce Willis did last man standing which is a 20s gangster flick, but the same story as well. But I really like the kurosawa flicks, especially ran.
True, however Yojimbo is not based on Red Harvest. It is according to Kurosawa loosely inspired by The Glass Key, which in turn is a revised version of Red Harvest. If you read or see either Red Harvest or The Glass Key, there are hardly any similarities to Yojimbo, both former movies (and books) are murder mysteries. While Yojimbo is not. The only real similarity is that it is a lawless city controlled by 2 major factions.

Yes Dawn, Yojimbo would be good for you to see and expand your cinema experience. It's a fantastic movie.
A Fistfull Of Dollars is a shameless ripoff of Yojimbo (1961), directed by Akira Kurosawa. Kurosawa and Toho ,the Japanese production and distribution company behind Yojimbo, filed a lawsuit against Leone. Leone ignored the lawsuit but it was eventually settled out of court for over $100,000 and 15% of the worldwide box office of A Fistful of Dollars. Walter Hill, the director of the 1996 film Last Man Standing (starring Bruce Willis), gave full credit to Kurosawa (and Yojimbo writing partner Ryuzo Kikushima) on his movie.
Some other great Clint Eastwood westerns , Hang Em High, Joe Kidd, The Outlaw Josie Wales, Two Mules for Sister Sarah, High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider and Unforgiven which was an Oscar winner. All highly recommended by me.
Outlaw Josie Wales is the best
I love the whole trilogy and while TGTBATU gets the most praise of the 3, and for good reason, For a Few Dollars More is my fav by far. Lee Van Cleef stars, Gian Volente returns as a new villain yet it's still a great, focused story, much like this one and with a fantastic ending.
Don't forget Klaus Kinski's delightfully psycho hunchback character in FF$M
for a few dollars more is my favorite as well.

Be sure to watch pts 2 & 3 too: this is called the “man w no name trilogy “ However that’s not true: Clint’s name in pt 1: Joe; pt 2: Manco; pt3: Blondie. This trilogy is amazing because: Eastwood, Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone. Absolutely brilliant films. Ps: the 4th movie u need to react to is Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone)
Those are not names they are nick names in this he simply called Joe like the common Joe that is not his name in the sequel he is called Manco which is Spanish for one arm and the next sequel which actually a prequel he is called Blondie because of his fair hair.

Indeed, and Dawn Marie should know that the next two films aren't sequels in the normal sense. Clint's characters in all three films are very similar, but it (probably) isn't the further adventures of the same exact guy in all three movies. That is to say, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE doesn't refer back to anything that happens in A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, and THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY doesn't refer back to anything that happens in the prior two films. It's more that Clint is a specific "type" of character that is existing in three different scenarios (but in a similar gritty, brutal western world), and each one is a clean slate.
That being the case, I'm glad Dawn Marie started with this, and is going to watch all three in release order. Each one is larger, grander and better than the last (and all three are terrific), which is lost on many first-time reactors who simply watch THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY ahead of the others, simply because it is the most famous of the three in pop culture.
@@InfraMajin The Good The Bad & The Ugly has a costume referral to other two movies near its end, where Blondie comforts a dying soldier then takes and puts on the famous poncho which Joe and Manco both wear in the other two movies, which is probably why Robert DesVeaux and others consider it as coming 1st in a presumed timeline
I love how happy and enthusiastic your reactions are. That you appreciate older films speaks volumes to you wanting to be entertained by a story rather than flashy effects and haphazard plot. It is also Intriguing watching you trying to puzzle out the story and your sympathy for the characters who are punished for simply trying to live their lives. Look forward to more. Keep going. Glad you're checking out one of the best trilogies ever! I've only seen a few people review the series, idk why but I guess modern reactors aren't interested in it. They are definitely missing out😎 CANT WAIT FOR THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY! Clint Eastwood is so iconic as the Man with No Name😏
A Sergio Leone classic. I grew up watching these movies with my Dad.
Gran Torino is one of his films that isn't a western but it shows his directing skills as well as his acting skills. One of my favorites! Also Clint's son is in Gran Torino.

Based on the Japanese film "Yojimbo", Directed by Akira Kurosawa, it was was also remade by Walter Hill as Last Man Standing starring Bruce Willis set during the American Prohibition era of the 1920s-30s but it's the same story. Clint Eastwood is now 92 years old
_Vamos_ means "you go." _Vamanos_ means "we go." So _vamos_ is "Get!"; _vamanos_ is "Let's go."
You'll hear in many Westerns cowboys saying "vamoose", a mispronunciation of _vamos._
Then there's a bunch of Spanish Charro words associated with U.S. Cowboy Culture:
"Buckaroos" (Vaqueros), "Rodeo" (Rodear), "Lariat" (La Reata), "Ten Gallon Hat" (Galon/braids), etc.
As others have mentioned, this movie was a remake of Akiro Kurosawa's "Yojimbo". What is less well known is that a second remake called "Last Man Standing" and starring Bruce Willis was released in 1996. That film sets the story in a Texas border town during Prohibition and the warring factions are Irish and Italian crime families running bootleg booze up from Mexico. Other good Clint Eastwood movies are "Dirty Harry", "Where Eagles Dare", and one of the finest westerns ever made, "Unforgiven".
I kinda wanna scream Pale Rider, but to randomly scream out a movie name would be odd.... but Pale Rider. And Outlaw Josie Wales is damn good. Absolute Power is an interesting one. Definitely must watch Unforgiven.

You will really like "The Good,The Bad and the Ugly".One of the best Westerns........in my opinion.
You will love the next two as well, and you will meet Lee Van Cleef who is great in both ...The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is my favorite...but all are great..
Clint used the body armor to get in pistol range. Once he got in pistol range he dropped the body armor. It wasn't needed anylonger.

An excellent suggestion. The Danish National Orchestra version of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the best I've ever heard. It's got 114 million views! You're one letter off - Tuba is really Tuva. She's the gal wearing the pistol earrings.

@@THOMMGB The Danish Version is not the best, it has only that many view because everyone and his dog react to this cover version, instead of reacting to the original versions of Morricone himself, cut from the movies, the OST and even serval live concerts directed by Morricone, wich are also available on YT.
Just because the Danish version is the only one you known of, doesnt mean its the best.
A funny story about this movie. The reason why Clint Eastwood did it was because, due to his contract for the TV series Rawhide that he starred in, he couldn't do an American Western, but there wasn't anything about an Italian one. His agent at the time said that it would be a "bad step" for his career to do it (which is why Clint Eastwood's production company is called "Mal Paso" which is Spanish for "bad step."
The original title was "The Magnificent Stranger" but later got changed to "Fist Full of Dollars." Clint Eastwood didn't know about the name change and when it was released, was curious about this movie that everyone was raving about, only to find out that it was actually his movie. these movies ended up being the films that really launched his film career.
BTW, even though it's considered a trilogy, it's not technically the same character, just a similar one. There are a lot of actors who get reused for different roles between the 3 movies.
All Clint Eastwood westerns are good. It's not hard to be a fan after just one movie. His whole collection is damn good. Full of great, memorable characters and storylines. Nuff said.
I agree I am 36 years old and been a Clint Eastwood fan since was 8 years old watching Eastwood westerns with my dad especially on the weekends I felt we bonded that way when was a kid. My dad had all of Clint Eastwoods westerns and cop movies including Dirty Harry series on vhs. We them all on dvd now but still watch The Dollars Trilogy and Pale Rider, Unforgiven etc even when on tv. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly the one have seen the most of the Trilogy and For A Few Dollars More.

This trilogy is excellent, he did many Westerns in the beginning of his career, the first film he directed and starred in was, 'Play Misty for Me' which is well worth watching, as are his 'Dirty Harry' films, he returned to the Western later in his career with, 'Unforgiven' which many people consider one of the best Westerns of all time.
the ultimate sequel to this trilogy could be seen as (the splendid) Unforgiven (1992) - where Clint Eastwood wrapped up the this style of gritty, blood spectacle western.
This is the start of one of the greatest trilogies ever made and I am so here for it.. wait till she gets to the last half hour of The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly.
Clint Eastwood & Sergio Leone created a spaghetti western masterpiece trilogy, I love all three movies.
This was a good trilogy, but in my opinion, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), also a Sergio Leone film with music by Ennio Morricone, was the best Spaghetti Western ever made. That opening 13 minutes (with Jack Elam, Woody Strode and Charles Bronson), are worth the price of admission by itself!
This year A fistful of dollars turns 60 years of its release and that is still a cult classic because the movie saw two big stars born, who were Ennio Morricone and Clint Eastwood and where Sergio Leone (the film director) imposed the known genre as "Spaghetti Western".
If you REALLY like movies that are all in one place you would like the Hitchcock movie, "Rear Window" it all takes place in one apartment and the communal courtyard. Excellent cast of Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly, with lots of voyeuristic neighborhood action, a mystery and suspenseful drama.
You know it's a good movie when other shows pay tribute to certain scenes i.e the simpsions

This movie was to be the start of his rise to stardom as a great actor then onto directing.before this movie people only new him from a role he played as rowdy Yates in a tv western called RAWHIDE which ran from 1959 to 1966.👍
With a non-existent budget and few resources, Leone recreated the entire western genre. Every American western before this, good and bad, had a similar look, feel, and sound. Leone's characters were sweaty, unshaven, dirty and dishevelled. The Hollywood musical scores were eclipsed by Morricone's brilliance in this film as well. The violence was extreme for the time, and Eastwood's character was the first real anti-hero of the genre. The very first scene flips a genre cliche on its head. Brilliant and innovative in every way. Since this trilogy, virtually every western looks and sounds like these do. A landmark film. Gian Maria Volonte, who played Ramon, was an acclaimed actor in Europe. He did some great work in the genre, but he didn't think much of these films. He appears again in the next film, as do several other actors. Leone had a few actors he liked to keep around.
It's actually not a trilogy.. sergio leone had 2 more in the anthology entitled "Once Upon A Time In The West" and "Duck, You Sucker aka A Fistful of Dynamite"!! (Said whilst pushing my glasses up)

It warms my heart seeing the younger generation appreciate old films. Heck these films came out even long before l was born. Clint Eastwood has made many many iconic films. Sergio Leone, the director of this made 3 more films after this trilogy too. Once Upon A Time In The West, A Fistful Of Dynamite and Once Upon A Time In America. All superb. In an age of Hollywood churning out crap after crap after crap, I can't recommend classic films highly enough. Enjoy the experience and journey.
Thanks for reacting to this. It is the first film of the trilogy that established him as a movie star.
Of the three films, most would say that "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is the best. I would agree, but there is another Leone film that is every bit the equal of this film and it is "Once Upon a Time In The West" staring Henry Fonda, in a rare appearance as the bad guy, and a very, very bad guy, with Charles Bronson, and Jason Robards, and Claudia Cardinale. The music to this film is the best yet with every character having their own theme as well as one that is for the west itself. There is a bit of a mystery element in it as well. You really should check it out.
@Dawn Marie, it is known as "the man with no name" series. The last of five (I believe) of the "spaghetti westerns" (Italian-made) is "High Plains Drifter." I recommend it.
The song playing when Joe (Clint) is helping Marisol and Julio escape is in 'Kill Bill 2'.

I agree. I really enjoy TGBU but I actually think FAF$M is a better movie. The way in which the whole pocket watch thing is handled throughout the movie is just outstanding. Then you have the finale... 😮
Dawn, please don't stop at the end of the trilogy, afterwards Sergio Leone made the best western of all time, Once Upon a Time in the West and it never gets the acclaim it deserves.
Clint has done so many amazing films in different genres.
Westerns: Spaghetti Western trilogy, Outlaw Josie Wales, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, Unforgiven, Two Mules for Sister Sara
War: Where Eagles Dare, Kelly's Heroes, Heartbreak Ridge
Comedy: Bronco Billy, Everywhich Way But Loose, Anywhich Way You Can, Space Cowboys
Cop Dramas: Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool
Sports: Trouble with the Curve, Million Dollar Baby
Drama: Gran Torino, Play Misty for Me, The Eiger Sanction
There are many more, but these are arguably the creme of the crop & are vintage Clint Eastwood.
This was remade as Last Man Standing, with Bruce Willis as the Clint Eastwood character. Set in the 1920/30's prohibition era with two opposing sets of gangsters. It really quite good.
Clint has been around since the 1950's. Starting on TV in a show called Wagon Train. His performance in "Unforgiven" from 1992 is great and won several Oscar's, including "Best Picture". When you're done with this trilogy, you can go to his Dirty Harry, cop film's. "Seeing as how this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you gotta ask yourself a question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya PUNK??!!" Priceless.

Clint Eastwood's character in this trilogy is called The Man with No name. This movie was directed by Sergio Leone. This is one of the directors that inspired Quentin Tarantino.
Clint Eastwood made all three of these movies in Italy at the same time and had no idea that they were hit in the United States. This genre is called spaghetti Western.
The scene where D'jango shoots those people including the one in the bath was inspired by the small house shootout in this movie and that scene in back to the future 3 was a great tribute to this movie
Spaghetti Westerns: Italian Directors, filmed in Spain, mostly Italian and Spaniard actors but some Americans, Germans, French and other Euros.
You'll finally understand why Marty McFly calls himself "Clint Eastwood" in the third movie, cause Clint Eastwood was like a big western star for us kids in the '60s to '80s and why Mad Dog asks what kind of a sissy name is that, cause nobody knows "Clint Eastwood" back in the Old West.
The pistol motion describing is called “Fanning.”
Recommendation: ‘The Day of the Jackal’ (1973) No one has reacted to this gem.

The guy that played Ramone as well as actor Lee Van Cleef, who'll both be in the next movie, are the 2 best villains of all western movies. They have the look, the skill, the voice and the brains. Dangerous antagonists worthy of the best protagonists.
I agree. I've always loved a movie that takes place in a small town. Where everyone knows each other. Also, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is the best in the trilogy IMO. I love your videos. Thank you.
Rio Bravo (1959) & El Dorado (1966) are among my favorite westerns. (essentially the same movie done twice). They are simple stories that happen in a limited space so you don’t need a map to follow along.
you have to do Once Upon a Time in the West also, which is the same type of spagetti western, although with Charles Bronzon and not Clint (i usually called Once Upon a Time in the West) the best Clintan-western although clint is not in it.
Then you must of course do Unforgiven also, which is a later Cllnt western. That one is a bit differnt than the spaggetii westerns, but is a real stellar movie that you can't miss.
"Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968) featured Hollywood Western legend Henry Fonda, who usually played The Hero. He was "Frank," the railroad man's master of dirty works, and "the Coldest Killer, ever." "My Name is Nobody" (1973) saw Henry Fonda play another kind of Hero, thanks to "Nobody.";)

This character is referred to as the man with no name, even though he officially has names in all 3 movies....Joe in this one, Monco in the next, and the nickname of Blondie in the third. This first movie is a classic tale....the last is the best made and most artistic one. My favorite is the second, For a Few Dollars More. Can't put my finger on why.

These old Spaghetti Westerns were mostly filmed in Spain I believe.

Clint Eastwood rose to prominence in a tv western series in the early 60s called Rawhide. He made a number of westerns in the 60s and 70s and is also known for playing the title role as a cop in a series of Dirty Harry movies into the 80s.
This movie was one of Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns", called this because they were directed by Italians, largely in Spain. Leone was probably the most successful and best known of the spaghetti western directors. Although this film, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly are often referred to as the Dollars trilogy, Leone never intended them to be considered a trilogy. The plots of the movies aren't related, and, although Eastwood and a few of the other actors appear in all three movies, they play different characters with different names. Though Eastwood's character appears to be the same throughout the trilogy, he does have different names in each one. The third movie, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, is actually set before the other two.
In my opinion, Leone's best western, even though Eastwood is not in it, is Once Upon a Time in the West. I highly recommend you check it out too. The opening scene at the train depot is a classic.

I'm from Texas and growing up my dad would watch these spaghetti westerns every weekend. Practically know every detail of these.
Consider _Play Misty For Me_ which was Eastwood's first directorial effort. It's quite different from many of his earlier movies. Also _Bronco Billy_ is underrated.

Once you finish the trilogy, you'll need to watch Unforgiven for a more modern and realistic take on the western genre. It stars Clint Eastwood and he also directed it and won an Oscar for his direction. The film won four Oscars in total.
"Fanning" is a thing you can do with a single action revolver where cocking the hammer advances the next round and the trigger just releases the hammer. Usually the hammer is filed smooth so the hand can slip off it. Then you hold down the trigger so the hammer doesn't lock in the cocked position. In this way the hammer can be repeatedly pulled back and released with the fanning action of the other hand. Accurate? No, as it precludes aiming, but much faster than cocking with your thumb, taking aim and then squeezing the trigger.
Hollywood also does this with double action revolvers because it looks cool.

If the Sound seems abit "Off", it's because the Director never recorded sound on set. Literally EVERYTHING you hear, from the Dialogue to the Spurs is recorded in Post Production. Sergio liked doing it that way so there would be no "Outside Distractions" for the Audience.
These were the films that discovered Clint Eastwood and made him a star.
And before these films, westerns were simplistic, Disney-like, and juvenile. And so, these shook the industry.
Yes, there are the 3 "Dollars" movies, but I hope you know they also go by the more popular name, Spaghetti Westerns, even though they were so popular that over 600 Spaghetti Westerns were made after Sergio Leone's original 3. I loved your reaction and am so glad that you went down this path.

Now people are going to suggest you watch "Once Upon a Time in the West" after these three. You should listen to those people -- it's Leone's masterpiece. Eastwood's not in it, but Charles Bronson accepts his mantle as the Nameless One (well, "Harmonica") and fills those boots just fine. If you enjoy the trilogy, you should like it. Its proportions are epic and it's the peak of the genre.

"A Fistful of Dollars": A saw this in a theater and found it more interesting than the usual Hollywood Western. A Samurai movie fan said it looked a lot like Akira Kuorsawa's "Yojimbo" (1959), which I hadn't seen. After I saw Sanjuro the Ronin take down the town's two gangs, I concurred. That would explain the lack of a screenplay/original story listing in the credits of Sergio Leone's that had puzzled me.
Finally caught up to all your reviews. Clint is now 93 years young. He was 55 when Scott Eastwood was born
These Italian Westerns are affectionately referred to as Spaghetti Westerns. Some directors, like Leone, liked certain actors so much that they get reused with actors they were with in a previous movie but as a different character. Italian audiences were more forgiving in these instances than American audiences were, so it was always easier to get a role in a foreign film than in the US. You'll notice this in For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, so don't think anything of it or it could distract you from the film. As you may have noticed, the soundtrack is easy to follow along, you picked up on it right away even though you hadn't heard it before, this is the magic and genius of Ennio Morricone. You will love the music in the next two of the trilogy. I can't wait to see your reaction to them. Anyway, loved the review, love you, take care and stay safe ❤.
The three movies aren't exactly a trilogy as they aren't really connected by story or character, but by style, production, spme actors, director, & music, but since the great Sergio Leone did them 3 in a row, they're called trilogy for shorthand.
i'm glad you were asking what Clint's name was in this. This trilogy is commonly called "the man with no name " trilogy. Although sometimes he is known as Joe, Manco or Blondie.
