    I stopped using shaving cream a few years ago, alternating between conditioner and a bit of coconut oil to help with razor burn. Works amazing. Also I don't use primer anymore. I never really noticed a difference with my makeup when doing so.

    Hi Kelly! I used a menstrual cup for 4 years now and I love it! I learned how to use it perfectly in 1/2 periods and then I was good to go, just remember to remove the suction seal before pulling it gently and make sure it's fully open when you insert it :)

    I use a Diva cup and Thinx underwear and I love them both! The Diva cup takes some trial and error, but once you get it it's awesome. Plus you can leave it in for 12+ hours (depending on your cycle). The Thinx underwear are an easy switch and work great. They kind of feel like swim suit bottoms. Good luck on your low waste journey!

    • @tigermelissa
      @tigermelissa Před 5 lety +4

      I second this (although I haven't tried Thinx)...the Diva cup (or an off-brand) is great, especially if you clip the little nubbin off. It's so much more comfortable and you can still grab it!

    • @Lululita1990
      @Lululita1990 Před 5 lety +2

      I have a question for you both... How can you choose the measure on the diva cup? Everytime I want to buy one, I have the same question and I end up not grabing anything.

    • @tigermelissa
      @tigermelissa Před 5 lety +9

      @@Lululita1990 well I was looking on the diva cup website and it says that if you're under 18/newer to periods, go with model 0. If you're under 30 and haven't had a child yet, go with model 1. And if you're over 30 and/or have given birth, go with model 2.
      And if you want to go for a different brand, they usually have like S, M, L sizes that correspond to models 0, 1, and 2 respectively. Honestly, if you're just trying it out, I don't think it's necessary to get the name brand of diva cup... They're expensive. I just got a pack of 2 off of Amazon for like 10 bucks, and those have worked wonderfully for me.

    • @tigermelissa
      @tigermelissa Před 5 lety +2

      @@Lululita1990 also I just found this: putacupinit.com/chart/ which compares the sizes of different brands!

      @Lululita1990 Před 5 lety +3

      @@tigermelissa thank you for your answer! I have 29 and had an interrumption of pregnancy on week 4. But I think, based on my tampons (I use small ones bc I just feel uncomfortable using bigger ones) that I will go for 1 (M). Thank you also for letting me know that other cups work just as good as the diva one.

    Once I went cruelty free I also decided to not buy makeup products that were recyclable. It's been so eye opening on how wasteful the beauty community is, it's shocking & sad. When I ask CZcamsrs how they recycle their stuff they tell me terracycle. Not everyone can afford $200 for a terracycle box. I'd love to find more people in the beauty community spreading the message of sustainableity like you. Keep up the good work Kelly.

  • @bia.and.the.makeup6583

    I appreciate so much how you bring the focus to the fact that buying unnecessary beauty items is wasteful and how you can be not bewasteful and still be a beauty lover. There are a million small things we can do, that all together help a lot. I am also never using shaving cream and as you mentioned in your former video I also do not buy any cotton pads anymore. Also I am trying to be less wasteful in my every week purchasing by for example buying in stores, where you bring your own containers, so the food sold there is not wrapped a million times in plastic. Usually I am very thoughtful with how much waste I produce, but with the beauty side I struggle a bit to find alternatives, so I really appreciate this kind of videos. Great job Kelly!!

    Diva cup is the best thing that happened to me when it comes to hygiene products. It’s a bit of a learning curve and you have to be really comfortable with blood and all that but if you live in the hot humid area it’s really worth it

  • @thanhkhue0312
    @thanhkhue0312 Před 5 lety

    I love that you have been encouraging the minimalist lifestyle on CZcams instead of the (over)haul culture. Like you, I don't buy lip scrub anymore and make my own. The amount of chemicals entering my body from lipsticks is probably more than enough already, so I prefer my lip scrub to be as au-naturel as possible. I mix sugar and coconut/olive oil, it's fantastic.
    You have so many great recommendations for castor oil, I bought a huge bottle but not sure how to use yet. Makeup remover definitely has been my struggle, since my remover clothes are too rough for the eyes, my eyelashes would fall like autumn leaves.
    I use Lena cup and love it. It is much more hygiene for me to go out all day and not worrying about finding a clean bathroom to change pads. Sometimes accidents like leaking can happen, so there's a learning curve there, but I don't mind since pads can leak as well. When you get a hang of it, I love using it more than anything. No funky fishy smell business. A little inconvenience is that it can be hard to use on lighter days since it may be too dry to go smoothly, so I'll recommend looking into Thinx as well.
    Thanks for a great video! Keep it up!

  • @MollieGold
    @MollieGold Před 5 lety

    I love videos like this Kelly! I bought Thinx underwear last August and this may sound over dramatic but it was one of the best decisions ever haha! I never dread my period like I used to and not having to change them as often as I would my pads is such a big bonus. They don't smell; they're not dirty or messy; they're super super comfortable; and the Thinx are really great quality! They have value sets that you can put together which is super nice because then you save a bit of money and get to personalize your set! I can't recommend them enough if you're looking into it. It's so cool to think that I'll never have to buy disposable pads again and don't have to worry about forgetting or running out when I need them. Hope this was helpful for you, Kelly and best of luck! Can't wait to follow your sustainability journey more!
    Also, another (IMO) intimidating swap is switching to a safety razor but I'd probably say that is my other best decision lol. If you haven't already and are maybe hesitant (I know I definitely was) I really hope you give it a try. The difference in the quality of shave you get is incredible. Once I tried it I was laughing at how scared I was beforehand! There were no cuts and I had the closest, smoothest shave of my life :)

    I use the lily cup. It collapses down so it’s very easy to carry in your purse when you think you may start soon! I love it. I change it every morning and every night and never experience leaks (I used to leak when using pads and tampons). The major con to a menstrual cup is that it needs to be changed in a one person bathroom so you can rinse it out before putting it back in. It’s also a bit messy so it’s just nice to have a sink and privacy. It took me 2-3 cycles to really get the hang of placing it, but since then I have no complaints!!

    I have a menstrual cup, and I absolutely 100% ADORE and recommend it to everyone. I have a very heavy period and frequently leaked no matter how many times I changed my old tampons and such. Menstrual cup does not leak, you can leave it in longer, it's much more discreet, and it makes my period sooooo much less of an inconvenience. I swim with it, work out with it, go to the beach in it, everything. It's the greatest!!
    And I also don't use shaving cream. Just use my normal bodywash in a good lather and moisturize after! Love the video!

    @jessicafrandi4516 Před 5 lety

    I love that you care about environment as well as your body. I have switched to Diva Cup for 2 years now and it works wonder! There's a learning curve to it, it took me 4 cycles to completely find the perfect application on myself. But once you have, it is an absolute comfort, you won't feel anything, and it can last you 12 hours during heavy days. I sometimes leave mine in for 24 hours coz i have very light flow and a little sensitive skin, so i opt for less frequent putting it in and out.
    Regarding shaving, i never shave anymore. I only use my trusty Braun epilator for all my body hair and I don't really care when my leg hair grows 3mm longer than usual. We are human anyway 😊

    I don't buy lip scrubs either. If I need one, it's so easy to make with what's in the kitchen....like a little bit of honey mixed with sugar. I keep a few sample size jars from sub boxes to mix things in. They're easy to clean & reuse. It's been so long since I purchased shaving cream, that I don't even remember when the last time was. I use whatever soap or shower gel I'm using. The razors last much longer if you rinse, then immediately gently dry them. I also have washable, reusable cotton rounds that a lovely friend of mine sent me. Love them !!!!! It's saved on a ton of waste not throwing out so many rounds and/or makeup remover wipes. If we each make small changes of what we use in our life, the end result will be Huge Changes for the planet and future generations. Great job on this video Kelly :) Thank You ❤

    I'v been using a menstrual cup for almost three years and I love it. I have to say it may take some time to get used to it but there's no way I'm going back to old methods. I find it is more convenient over cloth pads because you don't have to worry about doing laundry everyday. The least convenient thing about cups I have to say is when you have to change it in a public toilet but you can always change it before leaving your house (you can wear it for up to 12 hours) . I switched to a cup back in 2015 and I'm never going back to something else. I decided to change for the waste the other products created, but actually what I like the most is that I can't feel it.
    Once it's in place, I can forget it for the whole day. I usually empty it in the morning before leaving for work and at night before bed, so I never have to take care of changing anything in toilets that aren't mine.
    I never had leaks and the cup was never full.
    But I have to admit, some times it might be a bit uncomfortable to put it in. Not hurting or anything, just a light discomfort, but it doesn't last! (for me at least)
    And it was 10 bucks 4 years ago. I could almost fund a trip with the money I save!

    Thanks so kuch Kelly, I just bought some Castor Oil and empty mascara tubes online! I stopped buying eye creams. I follow some dermatologists and they all concur it's just a watered down and over priced face cream. They suggest using your anti aging serum or cream around the eyes, but to mix it with a simple moisturizer to make it less potent.

    I love menstrual cups! There's definitely an adjustment period with these (time may vary), but once you make the adjustment, they are wonderful! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I also tend to buy lip balm made with natural oils and use them on my lips, cuticles and even dry patches on my hands. The fact that the product is already conveniently tube and solidified that I can take with me, makes this a great multi-use product. I find that using conditioner for shaving cream is effective also.

    I've been using a menstrual cup for about 2 years now and I will never look back! I find it so much more comfortable than pads or tampons, they hold a lot more, they never leak, and I save so much money that I used to spend on non reusable products. I would definitely recommend:)

    Loved your video! I have been using different oils for my skin, nails, and hair for about two years now. I love creating these mixtures with essential oils because I know what goes in them. As for feminine hygiene, my daughter uses the Diva cup and loves it. It has some cons just like any other type of menstrual products, but she loves the simplicity of the cup as well as no risk of TSS and decreasing her carbon footprint. Good luck on your journey to a more sustainable life. I look forward to your future videos.

    Regarding the feminine hygiene topic: I made the switch to a menstrual cup a while ago now and I really like it. It definitely takes a bit of time to get used to, at least the application but other than that it doesn’t really feel different than let’s say a tampon. It also saves money and waste in the long run. The only times I am not exactly happy with it is the last few days when not much is happening anymore, but you still need protection. A Thinx might be nice for those days, that might be my next purchase. :)

    I’ve given up on lip scrubs too & now use a washcloth to exfoliate & better quality lip balms. And I went this week & bought supplies to make reusable cotton rounds. 😊. I love these idea & would love to see more about reducing waste!

    I highly recommend the Thinx undies. It is a higher cost initial layout, but totally worth it. On my heaviest flow day, I use disposable options, but for the rest of the time, the thinx undies cover me completely. I suggest just buying about 2-3 pairs to test it out. If you decide you like them, you will need maybe 6-8 pairs. Everyone is different though!

    Love hearing more of your sustainability tips!!!! (and you're so sweet to shout me out!) For feminine hygiene, I tried the diva cup for a while and it was ok but even the smallest size felt a little big/awkward for me, so depending on your preferences i'd check out some of the other brands out there (there are a ton!!). And obviously sam ravandahl's diva cup video is a must 🤣🤣

    I use a Diva cup and it's amazing! I would definitely go for it. I've heard that certain cups fit certain people better but you have to start somewhere. Also, I'd say be patient with it. My first cycle with it, I didn't know quite where to place it and thought it wasn't working for me. After lots of practice and placing it higher than what many people seemed to recommend, I found it felt really natural and totally worked. I can now go a whole workday without replacing it even though I constantly had leaks with other products.

    I have been using your hack from the old video about using a cloth for removing nail polish instead of cotton rounds and it’s been amazing. I was trying to come up with a way to do that more sustainably (since I’m always painting my nails) and this is a game changer.

    I bought the Pixi menstrual cup and I love it! It took my a few tries to figure out how to get it in (sometimes I use a little lube on the rim to help). It is comfortable and I have never had a leak. Not to get ~graphic but it feel cleaner and smell better than when I wear a tampon. This specific cup doesnt go all the way up to my surface, but sits lower down and that works best for it. Removal has not been a problem. I would give it a try! Thrift thick on CZcams likes the Pixi cup as well, I bought it after her review.

    I'm so happy to see your audience growing and growing. I remember when you responded to me in your comment section in your brands that are not actually cf or something like that. I prefer you over Tati who for some reason is seen as a concious one in beauty community (when she held a whole drawer of colourpop single eyeshadows for so long, few drawers for palettes, few drawers for lipsticks etc). Obviously as someone who tests makeup she has more than average person but when you have a whole room of drawers of singe steps in makeup and you don't work as a makeup artist, that's how you know you're a waste queen. No one needs to make dramatic change overnight but your approach to being wasteful is actually showing concious while hers is just lazy and rather vain just not compared to mega influencers

    Not certain your mitt is similar to the makeup eraser cloths, but I was able to eliminate makeup wipes, cotton rounds and eye makeup remover. I have very sensitive eyes and skin, so eliminating extra cleansing products is a big win. It works great!

    Brava! This video is gold to me. 😊 I want to try some more reusable feminine products also, but so far all I've purchased are the Tomies by VeriKeri period panties. You get 3 in a box for $28 and it also comes with 2-3 small disposable heating pads that slip into the front pocket of the panties.

    I’m still getting used to the menstrual cup. I had to try 3 before I found one that seems right for me. It’s definitely great on your heavier days. My best advice is to watch CZcams videos of people who have tried them. ThirftThick recently did a few, and Samantha Ravndahl just did one too. You can get some advice on the insertion and removal process from those videos and from the comment sections. It takes some getting used to for sure. Just remember not to give up if your first couple don’t work for you. I personally needed a softer, more pliable one. I hope this helps a little. 😊

    Menstrual cups are a great option! I don’t like the shape of the Diva Cup brand specifically for my body though. The one I have is from Amazon, I think it’s called the blossom cup. I’ve had it for a couple years, no issues once you get used to it.

    To anwser your question: about 9 months ago, i switched from using pads to a reusable cup. Inserting it was quite easy from the beginning, but getting it out was a little pain in the ass. With 9 months of experience now, it’s so easy! I get it out, clean it and put it back in in 5 minutes, morning and evening! I personally use the organicup, less expensive as the diva cup but it’s so good! No complains and definitely won’t be going back to pads!

    I like the Moon Cup more than the Diva Cup. Just make sure you get the right size and boil it before you use it on the first day of your cycle. If your flow is super heavy, you may consider pairing your cup with Thinx or with cloth pads.

    Just found you, love your videos.
    I really like sugar scrubs, but I've been making my own for a couple years now. I never found the store bought ones to be gritty enough. I refuse the same container, refill with sugar, coconut oil, and a more liquidy oil (olive, canola, whatever is in my kitchen) and some essential oils. I then use this to shave my legs. Plus, I don't need to moisturize my legs afterwards! Sort of a 3 in 1 product.
    I agree, we can't all make huge changes, but every small change makes a difference. And several small changes add up!

    Hi Kelly i switched to a munstural cup about half a year ago and i love it! its a bit of a change but totally ok. I would recommend checking how low your cerviy is when your on your period because if yours is very low like mine you should get a cup that is more round instead if the longer form that it more commen, because then you don't have to empty it out every 3-3 hours on the heavy days but I am sure you will anyway read about that while informing yourself about cups. lots of love from germany

    You can also make your own DIY sugar lip scrub if you really like sugar scrubs. I always just really moisturize my lips over night and then take some sugar on a toothbrush (a toothbrush I ONLY use for this purpose) and gently scrub my lips.
    I also use conditioner or bar soap to shave.
    100% Argan oil is AMAZING for your hair! My hair dresser says it’s one of a few oils that actually penetrates the hair and absorbs into it vs coating and sitting on top of the hair. I coat my hair with argan oil as my hair mask and leave it in a bun for the day. I add a ton extra to my dry ends. By the time I shower my ends don’t have oil on them anymore because they soaked it all up!

    Thank you for using your platform to talk about sustainability. About menstrual cups: They are really hard to use at first, it took me a solid 8 months to find the right way to make it work but once you learn it's a bless. And also I switched plastic razors for an electric epilator, it reduces so much plastic waste and, in my opinion, the are more gentle than razors! (I have sensitive skin).

    I save old used up toothbrushes. Some I use for cleaning, but I always have one that I use to exfoliate my lips. I discovered this trick in HS (ages ago) and it works amazingly and lasts for a long time. Just with a balm or a beauty oil and extends the use of the used up toothbrush. And I've used my conditioner for shaving for forever. I think it works better than everything.

    I love my diva cup! There are many different brands but the diva cup is a great place to start. My cycle is heavy, very long, painful and overall a bad time. My cycles minimum average is 9 days with 5 being very heavy. Despite how much I bleed, it has never gotten full even when I was pushing my luck of 11/12 hours. It has a learning curve and can be frustrating but once you figure it out I swear there is no going back.
