Divide by 3... Take max limit and divide by 3. That's your new max limit. Example.. If credit card max is 3000/3= 1000 is your new max. This is how you utilize credit properly to raise your credit score.

This was very informative. My credit score is now 780 I don't have any student loans paid for my nursing school with a scholarship and utilized the payment plan at the school which I paid thw cost out of pocket. Always dividing by 3 it what raised my credit score up. Thanks

Jay, I understand the idea behind the secure credit card and how to utilize that tool to improve credit (max limit divide by 3). How does the secure loan work? There's no max limit because you are paying back a set amount.

What do you mean by “ NEW MAX “ 30% of 300 is 90 but dividing by 3 gives me 300. What’s the big difference? I though you want to keep under 30%

It pains me to see someone who is looked upon as an "advisor" of finances is offering incorrect information.
What is this 1/3 concept? And where did it come from?
Use whatever amount, up to 100% of your available credit limit and use both your statement closing date and due date as ear marks.
1. Make sure your balance owed is no larger than 9% of your available balance on your statement closing date. Because that is the date cc companies report your utilization, which makes up for 30% of your calculated score.
2. Assure that your balance due for previous months statement is paid in full by your due date, do incur interest.
This 30% or 1/3 thing has to catch cancer and die already.
You can use over 30% that doesn't make much of a difference for your credit score. Main thing is paying your bills and not using it that much. Good thing is usually once you pay enough on it they will raise your credit limit, inadvertently decreasing you utilization.

ANDRÉA a rotating account is one that rotates, meaning you will have a balance due each month or billing cycle with interest (maybe). For example, if you spend $300 on your credit card that's has a max limit of $900.
By paying this bill off at once, you would not build any credit, or prove that you have the ability to pay overtime. If it's a rotating account, you should pay a portion of the $300 that's due, let's say you pay $150. Then the next month, you decide to pay half of that, which leaves $75 as a remaining balance. The next month you choose to pay $60 of the $75 that's due. This will leave you with only $15 dollars left, now you can either decide to pay it off or continue making payments until you decide to use your card again. By doing this you're showing that you can make payments overtime on a rotating account. The amounts I used aren't perfect and was just for the example but this really does help. I recommend leaving a balance that you are comfortable and certain that you can & will pay each month.
