  • The Colt 1862 Police revolver was the final gun produced in Colt’s cap and ball new line of streamlined revolvers.
It was a five-shot, .36 caliber revolver built on the ,31 caliber, Model 1849 frame, to produce a reasonably powerful, but compact carry gun.
In this video we’ll shoot my 162-year-old Colt Police revolver.

Congrats on getting the pocket police. An original pocket police is next on my list to add to my collection. Earlier this year, i was lucky enough to pick up an original pocket navy. Quite rare gun still in cap and ball form. After shooting it. Quickly became one of my favorite shooting cap and ball guns. I let dustin at guns of the west borrow it Recently. Hes made a few videos on it. Speaking of nipples on originals. My original 49 pocket. The flash holes in the nipples, were so large it would blow the hammer into half cock. I ended up having to drill the nipples out to replace them. Like you, i had the same problem finding stock nipples. I ended up doing something Controversial. i normally would not have done this. i dont like modifying originals. But I ended up re- tapping the cylinder for uberti nipples. the main reason is the Availability of good aftermarket nipples. It made the revolver run great, plus its a modification that unless i told you. or you Measure the threads. its impossible to tell it was done. Again congratulations on the new colt.

I have considered drilling and tapping the chambers too, but so far, I have been able to find original nipples for the three Colt C&Bs in my collection.

A very interesting video. Thanks for posting it.
I guess that after 162 years your loading lever spring has finally failed. The loading lever even pops free on a misfire.
I used to have one (a replica) about 15 or 18 years ago, chrome or nickel plated (I can't remember which) with ivory (plastic, actually) grips. It wasn't really my thing: it liked to bind up pretty tight after only a shot or two. I can't quite remember, but I think I gave it to a mechanic friend who had plenty of tooling and equipment to get it to run properly, a fun little diversion for him.

Really appreciate all you've done over the years to showcase and relate the historic context of the firearms to us, in your first rate videos on YT and in your many magazine articles. Karl over at "In Range TV" on YT ran a Uberti 1862 thru the "backup gun course" and out of 6 or 7 contestants using modern small revolvers, Karl managed to place 3rd! Kinda proves that the 1862 Colt design, when in good shape, is actually a very effective handgun. Karl did have to get good nipples and tune up the Uberti for top operation; of course that shouldn't surprise any of us who shoot C&B replica revolvers! The Uberti's and Piettas are actually solidly made guns, but to keep the price down, the revolvers will need a bit of work to operate as slick as an original Colt or Remington would have worked when new.

When we saw makers of cartridge arms putting a .38 into a .32 frame, they were just repeating history. That little .36 was a great 19th century carry gun.👍

I have a reproduction that I bought at a gun show a few years ago. No markings on it that I could find, so I am not sure who made it. When I got it the caps would not seat far enough and was binding the cylinder. I ordered about 3 or 4 different sets of nipples that I was pretty much assured would work. They did the same thing. I wound up turning them down and shortening them a little as well. It worked quite well after that. I love the way it shoots but have found that if I cock as fast as I do with my other revolvers, it tends to over rotate.

Mike!..love all your videos on those black powder pistols! There is only one thing that kind of bothers me, and that is that quite often you point a loaded pistol to your left side where if you were at a shooting range with other shooters, you would of swiped them with a loaded firearm which isn't a safe act. Doesn't bother me too much when you're at Duelist Den range by yourself. But when you do that and I hear gun fire off to your left, it makes me cringe! Like I said, I love your videos and look forward to your next video. I now have about fifteen black powder pistols. Each one has been taken apart and debured and polished in all areas where parts move and move together so I can spot a potential problem of a part not wearing properly, which I learned from you and your videos!

My gun club has nine individual shooting ranges with 7-foot high side berms on each range, and considerable distance separating individual ranges.

I have a late model Uberti repro and I can't cap it on the gun. Mine does not have the groove for aligning the caps to the nipples so I just take the cylinder out and set it face down and put them on.

Careful! Lot of manipulating to clear jams and tighten the wedge, all with the hammer cocked.
