Nice job on the knife and the video. I noticed you offered a much less abridged version than usual. I enjoyed seeing your process in full. I now know why your results are better than mine. You clearly devote attention to the small things - and that makes all the difference. Well done.
Thanks Ben! I'm experimenting with doing more "live Magdad".
Amen Ben Mall 👊🇺🇸👊
Great restoration. You triggered a memory of 10 year old me biking down to the hardware store and admiring the display case of all the old timer knives and wishing I had the money for that one. Thanks for the video.
I kinda do the same thing with the Case knife display at Cabelas now!
@@357magdad the old hardware store had displays for case and buck knives too. That hardware store is still in town but in a different storefront but doesn't have the great knife displays anymore.
@@christopherharrylang7424 It seems like the cool displays are a thing of the past.
Great job turned out great. Nice job on the tip reprofile . I like the old American made old timers. Thanks 😊🙏
Thanks Mike!
Awesome restoration Magdad. Your $10 to current dollars conversion made me remember that spending $20 to take a date to the show and dinner back then as a kid was living high on the hog! 💸😱
My 16 year old just got her first job. She gets $12 an hour! I think I was getting less than half that when I was 16!
Very nice! I like how you corrected the tip. It showcase ready now.. maybe mrs.magdad can whip you out a sheath for it... 👍... I also have the same sharping kit... I had forgot all about til you broke yours out! Excellent video! Enjoyed it!!!
Thanks Vic! Someday I might try some leather working.
Steel Wool to the Rescue! More than once I've been saved by Steel Wool when nothing else seemed to work..........Beautiful Old Knife, a real part of Hunting History........And good as new now.
If I see steel wool at the yard sales, I always pick it up.
Very nice job it now looks a lot better now thanks for sharing your time and remember stay safe and make 🍺🍺👍👍🇬🇧
Thanks Brian!
Amazing restoration, and the Chicken Nugget joke made me laugh out loud. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Thanks Jeff! The chicken nugget comment got an eye roll from Mrs Magdad.
Hello Magdad beautiful Knife great job 👍🇺🇸
Thanks!
That turned out really nice Magdad. Great job! 😃👌🏼
Thanks David!
Great job Magdad!!! BEAUTIFUL KNIFE... They're still valued around $100 I believe. Glad Chuck was there to keep you properly informed on the proper terminology of the "blades". Chuck is always contributing in some way.
Thanks! Chuck is the brains of the operation!
Great Team Work 🇺🇸
Always a pleasure to watch your work Magdad
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hard to go wrong with a good fixed blade knife. You attention to the tip really paid off. Looks real good.
Thank you…
Thanks David! I'm happy with how it turned out!
Nice to see the Old Timer back in shape! Well done 3MD! 👍👍👀
Thanks! It was a fun project!
I love the feel of those Old Timer Delrin handles... I am not alone either as they fetch a pretty penny on eBay! Great job on a beautiful knife!!!!
I'm hoping you're right about the ebay prices!
Nice restoration Magdad! I number my sandpaper scraps too. I like using smaller pieces and when you cut them that small you’re bound to be missing the printed grit.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Preserving a great American tool.Thank You!
Thanks James!
Great restoration and a very informative how-to video. I have never done a knife but your video had gotten me interested.
Thanks John! You'll have to keep an eye out for an old knife at the flea market!
Different format than the usual but I like it! Great job as usual, thanks for sharing and take care!!
I am experimenting with more "live Magdad" in my videos.
Just arrived here via scout-crafter and now subscribed and yes I always number my sand paper scraps! so that's two of us. Best regards - Stu (Newcastle UK)
Thank you for subscribing! I hope you enjoy my content! I'm glad you label your sandpaper too!
Sorry to big of fingers. Anyway thanks for working with him. I guess that shows he listens to me. He knows who I talk to and learn from. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks
It's nice when your kid listens to you!
Really nice cleanup. The reshaping of the tip was good work. I keep forgetting to thank you but a couple of months ago my son sent you pictures of an old clamp. It had a stair step look to it. We seen it at a tool store that has been in business since approximately 1800. He ask them about it they didn't know what it was used for. He wanted to buy it but they wouldn't sell it. I told even if they would I was sure it was out of our range.
That was an interesting looking clamp!
Absolutely beautiful work. Watching you so patiently bring this knife back was a joy. Thank you.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Beautiful work and attention to detail. I agree the re profiled tip looks a hell of a lot better now than before. I really enjoyed this restoration.
Thanks Shed Man! I'm happy with how it turned out!
Really enjoyed seeing you sharpen the knife with that tool. Came out great!
Thanks Tom! It is literally shaving sharp!
Much better Magdad... I've always liked those knives. Had a good friend in Ga. That had one. I sharpened it many times but never could talk him out of it..lol
I was happy to find it at the engine show!
I think it looks very good! This was an excellent how to video, and yes I label my scrap sandpaper. Thanks
Thanks Tony! I am finding that several people label their sandpaper. I'm not the only nut! LOL
Really nice work, Magdad.
Thanks Jeff!
I label the scraps of sandpaper. Never waste and never be in a position to find one’s self guessing.
Also, I love Chuck’s safety glasses.
Chuck is very safety conscious!
I like the erudite character that Chuck has become, perhaps he can teach the community some more stuff going forward! That's not the first time you've shaved your forearms, glad to see the hairs grow back! All the best
Chuck is a very smart bird! I have to space out my knife videos so my hair has time to grow back!
excellent work. I have had the same challenge cleaning up the pommel on other knives. I to wish good knife maker would not use that material. enjoyed your video now i will be on the look for a 40OT for my collection
I think that pommel would have looked nice in brass!
Yes, I agree i did a Buck 119 and replaced the pommel and the guard with brass it really turned out nice
She came out beautiful! I love those B&T knives…and I love the Old Timer knives! Good video, learned `a couple of things!
Magdad, think you better hang on to that knife, did some checking, could only find a couple on eBay, and they are asking big bucks relative to what you probably paid for it! Great find!
Thanks John! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
There's gonna be one more on ebay real soon!
Excellent work, thanks for the detailed tutorial. Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks! This was a fun project!
Absolutely. ....always mark the small pieces of sandpaper. It's easier to identify them for later use.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I've used fiber wheels on aluminum or magnesium and it definitely changes the color of the metal, however it generally returns to its luster when polished.
Thats my favorite so far , looks great !!!
Thanks Barry! I'm glad you liked it!
Superb work sir! I love how you pursue the details to produce such impressive results!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Nicely done Magdad. Chuck seemed a little on edge (no pun intended) 😂
🤣
I've been watching you for quite awhile and have viewed all your videos. This one is by far the best. I really enjoy seeing the process. Thanks, Ed
Wow! Thanks Ed! I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
That 50 year old knife looks brand new. Reshaping the tip came out really well and makes the knife look much better. I like your tips on tools and their usage, Demonstrating useful products is also helpful and can help keep me from learning by fiasco. Thanks
Thanks Pat! I love your tern "learning by fiasco"!
Looks good, nice blade re-contour.
Thanks! I'm happy with how it turned out!
Ahhh yes! Magdad LIVE! 😁
I'm experimenting with a different format. If you like me "live", you're gonna like the next couple episodes!
Great job! Reminds me of the useful dremel bits I need to find in the horde or purchase. I’ve been finding steel wool to be handy for a few things (especially burnishing pure linseed oil into axe handles) so I’m glad to see you brought it out. Also I’ve missed Chuck’s jump scares haha 😂. When that aluminum oxidizes it’s so hard to bring it back without pockmarks. Amazing work!
I wish Schrade had used nickel silver or brass for the pommel!
Turned out real nice!
Thanks John!
Wow I’d say that’s definitely sharp enough🤣! I really like the sharpener you’ve got. I think they’re one of the better ones on the market today. Looks great Magdad, see you next week👍!
My Lansky kit works good on larger pocket knives and hunting knives like this. I still use my tri-hone for smaller pocket knives.
Fine looking knife, great job as always.
Thanks Al!
That looks great! I love sheath knives, but i very rarley carry one because i get weird looks when I am out in public. Great stuff. Cheers
Thanks Joe! I get weird looks too, even without a knife!
Came out really nice 👍🏻
Thanks Stef!
Turned out really nice.
Thanks Larry!
Nicely done!
Thank you!
What an improvement!!
Thanks Armando!
Nice ole' knife ! Good job 💥
Thanks James!
I like these old timer knives
Me too!
Good job brother. Looks very nice.
Thanks!
Man that thing looks good 👍
It cleaned up nice!
Looks good.
Thanks!
It looks amazing! It made me want to get one, haha but I already have more knives than I could ever actually use haha
Really nice job Mate 🔪 👍 😊
Thanks Sparky!
Great job on that knife. You are definitely the boom-diggity of the small knives! I have two knives with broken tips that I did a small and not very nice re-profiling. One is an Old Timer penknife of the same vintage as yours. The other is a Chicago Cutlery paring knife. This video is encouraging me to see if I can do a better job.
Great video, but I must admit I like your original style better. Nothing more relaxing that some Magdad music and narration...ahhh. :)
Thanks Tom! Give the Dremel and grinding stone a try! I find that I can go slow and remove a little material at a time and keep the heat build up down.
@@357magdad Thanks Magdad!
That's sharp!!!!
It's fun making knives sharp!
Excellent job Mate!! Be proud to kill something with that eh!!☺
Hell yeah brother!!! 😂
It is definitely sharp enough to do some damage!
Nice! I used to have one of those. It was a great knife - until the blade snapped in half.
Thanks Jim! I think the point of this one was snapped off and reprofiled.
Good job.
Thanks!
Prob dirt and skin in the handle grooves. Nice job restoring a classic American Made Knife. It just needs a good hand made leather sheath.
Thanks Hal! A sheath would be nice!
🗡GREAT Job re-shaping the blade⚔ I like old knives You can use them and not worry about scratching them up 🤓
I like old knives too! I'm really happy with how this one turned out!
Now it's time to make a sheath
Someday I may give leatherworking a try.
Nice video Magdad. Awesome job and I liked what you did with the tip and how you explained everything you did.
What kind of sharpener was that you were using?
Thank You for sharing
Thanks Jack! That was my Lansky kit. It's the entry level kit - about $35 on Amazon. I bought the yellow super fine stone separately.
@@357magdad
Thank You
Well done! I have a Lansky set, but just need some more experience with it.
BTW, that probably isn't rust on the SS blade, just some crud. Those spots on the end cap is just some battle damage.
The Lansky kit is pretty handy!
That's a treasure
It was a good find at the flea market!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎
Magdad, Thanks for thr great presentation!
you can but a sheath for the Old Timer on Amazon for about $10.00, they are made in Mexico and the quality will match the knife. May I suggest that you wear a glove on your left hand while you are working with sharp tools?
Thanks for watching Ron! Hopefully the new owner will buy or make a sheath for it!
I gotta get me some of them belts.
They are a little pricey, but I've had good luck with them!
@@357magdad probably way outside my budget
@@MrDoeboy356 Amazon has them for $26. I got them for Christmas.
Need demo on home-made scotchbrite discs!
Here it is!

Hey Magdad. You sharpen a lot of knives... What is the deal with a wet stone sharpener? What is the benefit? Is it primarily to keep the knife cool to keep the temper while you sharpen it, or does the constant wetness help make the blade sharper? I bought a cool looking, belt driven sharpening stone set in a cast iron base that can hold water. I thought it would be a good addition to the shop for sharpening things, but I wonder if it's worth the trouble to set it up.
I don't have any experience with the kind of sharpener you describe. I've worked on a lot of old pocket knives and so many have blades that were over sharpened. I worry that what your describing might make it too easy to remove too much metal from the blade.
@@357magdad Good point! If I get it set up in the shop, maybe I'll just use it to sharpen my lawnmower blades and other heavier stuff. Thanks for the advice! 👍
Maybe if you took some epoxy glue and smeared a little over the pitting and then sand it over while wet, im thinking the aluminium particles will fill out the pittings making them less visible, i dont know, but i would give it a try 🙂🤙🏻
I have experimented with brass filings and epoxy as filler with OK results. I plan to try a fine brass powder next.
Nice job! I’m guessing that the discoloration on the pommel was more about temperature than the compound.
I think it might be a UV thing.
@@357magdad the plastic resins that make up the pads micro melts and causes discoloration from transfer. For super polish on that type of aluminum alloy pommel and the blade, use Bar Keepers Friend. I also use it on a lot of restoration work for metals and other surfaces. Try it! You'll like it!
@@williamwigfield7296 Thanks for the tip!
M.D. That came out very nice.. We're those the Lansky Diamond stones? I had a set just like that and they were in the trunk of my son's car and he got in an accident and my stones went to the junkyard with his car.. Between my son's and my xwife, I don't have much stuff left.. nice video...
Thanks Gary. I've got the entry level Lansky kit. Chuck and I can't afford diamonds!
@@357magdad I bought my diamonds many years ago, but I think I paid 60 dollars for my kit.
I had 3 stones, course, medium and fine.. I didn't find out what happened to them until years later.. God Bless and take care...
Hey Magdad, do you happen to know what size bolt is on your Craftsman bench grinder….I cannot seem to find one with right thread count. Tsk, John
1/2-20 one of them is left hand thread
@@357magdad Thank you!
I always thought the scales were bone ? I would like to have one one day lol
All the Old Timers I've found have Delrin scales.
I always thought Chuck looked delicious.
LOL
Is the 41OT the only Old Timer to have had a stainless steel blade? Makes sense that it would as a Bird&Trout…
I think the 41OT was only offered in stainless. I think it might have been an option on other knives.
Still a bargain to me ...
I think it's model: 4 OT (ot for old timer).
yep
Make a sheath for it now
I'd like to give leather working a try someday.
@@357magdad you can get into basic leatherwork for less than $50.00
DUDEZILLA?? WHAT, NO MUSIC??? What's next dogs and cats living together?
I am experimenting with a different format. I threw some music in there at the end for ya!
