  • SCHRADE WALDEN U.S.A. 880 KON-KAV LARGE STOCKMAN
    From the tang stamp this knife is in the 1958-1972 range, I believe it was made in the early 1960's. This model goes back to at least 1953 maybe earlier, and discontinued in 1977. It was made with bone covers before 1958 and then the switch to delrin was made. Before 1976 much of the blade grinding process was done by hand, then they switched to automated machinery . The blades on this knife are made of 1095 carbon steel. The main blade is a concave hollow grind with a "KON-KAV" blade etching, and a matchstrike long pull nail nick. Also has flat ground sheepfoot and spey blades. Brass liners and pins, nickle silver bolsters and shield. Other hollow ground "KON-KAV" etched models were the #863 a 3-5/8" whitler, and the #805 a 2-3/4" stockman. Some think of the #880 as one of the finest stockmans that Schrade ever built. The #881 stockman had a flat ground main blade. Made in Ellenville, New York, U.S.A. Thank you for watching! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comment section below.
    Specifications:
    Closed Length: 3-7/8"
    Main Blade Length: 3"
    Spey Blade Length: 2-1/16"
    Sheepfoot Blade Length: 2-1/4"

    Nice knife. 20 years ago most were focused on Case Knives and natural bone. Knives like this were under the radar and easily bought for very little $. 🇺🇸Good to see these classic 60s/70s Knives appreciated!

      I know what you mean, I hope they hold up well. I bet they do, but the knife company's might not outlast the knives. All those Camillus and Schrade knives of mine had lifetime warranty's... Until they closed.

    Great video and great knife. Just to give you some knowledge, the blended transition to the bevel doesn’t indicate being ground by hand. It’s because of the kind of finishing belt that was used. Likely this vintage was not hand ground, but the swedge probably was (and often still is by companies like GEC). Anyway, Schrade are excellent. Nice vid!

    Say Heah Jeremy, I bought another Fav. It's my S. O. G. Pillar Fix Blade. It's a 5" blade and has a Choil which I really like Choils. The profile is that of S. O. G. 's Signature Profile with the Camel Hump's. It was very popular in Nam, The Special Forces used it and so did the Tunnel Rat's. But it's not a big 5", But more on the smaller side, But so far a excellent bush craft knife. They say it's a Hollow Grind, But to me if it is its a very Shallow Hollow Grind, To me it feels more Saber, with maybe a slight Hollow by the line of demarcation where the two are Blended. The Shoulder. Anyhow the steel is CPM S35Vn, the handle is Micarta (Full Tang) , but the shape is very comfortable. I couldn't put it down all day and I carved everything with it, heh heh heh, Yeah, It's a Awesome Knife. Again Happy 4th of July, But easy on that 5th, heh heh heh.,,.

      lol The 5th has no worries. That S.O.G. sounds really nice, I can't believe I don't have a knife with that S35Vn steel. I've heard it's a real good steel. Sounds like you have found another winner there. Take care paulie 4x

      ISLANDOUTDOORS1 I have an app called Knife Steel compositions you can free download it from Google Play or from here zknives.com enjoy, But according to the information from Knife Composes the S30V holds a 20% better edge retention. But atleast the S35Vn has enough carbon for a real keen edge and I like that. Ciao.,,. p

      @ISLANDOUTDOORS1  Před 7 lety

      Nice, I have a steel app, I'll have to see if it's the same one. I do have some S30V so that sounds pretty good. Thanks paulie!

    • @sopwithcamelus
      @sopwithcamelus Před 3 lety

      @@paulie4x1 I hear they're both good steels, but the S35V is tougher. I've got no problem with the S30V. It takes a fantastic edge. I suspect S35V is similar. I guess it depends on what you want to do with your knife. For slipjoint knives I'm happy with 1095 or CV.

      The Pillar is a good looking knife.

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 Před 7 lety +1

    Say Heah, Yeah, Another good one. I like fix blades as you know. I have a Bowie #49 made for Coleman, and the Deer Slayer and a Schrade Sharpfinger. All made in the U.S.A..,, made out of the 0170-6 a carbon uses them. But guess what. that steel is no other than the 1095 CroVan Yup CV for short.,,.p

    • @ISLANDOUTDOORS1
      @ISLANDOUTDOORS1  Před 7 lety

      Finally! One I have! I have the USA Sharp finger, it was my dads. (video coming lol) I love the carbon steel but... not when it gets the red rust on it. It doesn't take long if they get wet. Don't ask how I know lol

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah The 0170-6 was and is inexpensive. But guys that make Customs in the 1095 CroVan charge a arm and a leg. Schrade, Western and in fact Ka-Bar still use it. That's why I almost bought a complete line if Beckers. Camillus use to make the Beckers, Infact they use to make all the Cold Steel CarbonV's too. A long steel strike I think Bethleham Steel went on strike that closes Camillus. So I think Sharon picked it up for Ka-Bar and the rest is history. But even so, If you use that steel what will happen eventually is a natural patina will start and it won't rust so much or as much.,,.p

    • @ISLANDOUTDOORS1
      @ISLANDOUTDOORS1  Před 7 lety

      Yes and I've forced a few patinas with boiling vinegar, the steel bubbles like its an alka-seltzer! works great! The next Becker I get will be the BK-7 (someday). I've seen some with new handles and forced patinas that look really nice. And they have some nice kydex sheaths for them too.

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 Před 7 lety +1

      Oh Yeah, I mentioned it before, Because Ka-Bar uses the same steel made by Sharon Corp. L as the old Camillus steel made by Bethlehem Steel for them, They made the Cold Steel 1095 CroVan well when the steel company went on a long strike, That caused Camillus to go belly-up and no more CarbonV. So when I found out its the same steel as the 0170-6 generic name. I bought almost the complete line of the Becker BK's. There are some suttle differences between Ka-Bar Beckers and Camillus Beckers. The Camillus Beckers were made a little stronger making them heavier too. But Becker claims they are improvements and don't in anyway make them less string ???, I question that, But Oh well. I know in time they will be collectors as are the Camillus Beckers. So Yeah, I have the BK-7 which I teamed up with my BK-17. But because the BK-7 is a tich lite to be a good chopper, its not that bad. So I threw the Ka-Bar St Zonstro as my chopper in this 3Knife carry, well I do add the BK-14 as my neck knife and I have (2) because when I bought scales for it that came with a black and orange set. The scales add another dimension to the BK-14. a lively piece if kit. Anyhow, Most recently I ordered my 2nd Limited Edition by Ka-Bar. The first one was with the BK-20 Bunduk Bowie, it also came with the BK-4 and the BK-5. Which I almost missed buying the L.E. because I thought that the Bundok would come down in price. How silly of me, $200.00 for three knives, I wasn't thinking, heh heh heh. So I scrambled to get the L.E. I found the last kit at Tomars and ended up paying $250.00 for it, But then I read a post by Ethan Becker saying on Blades Forum that only 450 kits were made and no more. So if you could buy a BK-4 and or the BK-5 I because their disconnected I believe they will be collectors. Just like my O.K.C Ranger Afghan is selling for $300.00 if you can find one. I teamed mine with the Ranger RD-9 both with the Hi-Viz Orange G-10 Handles in the 5160 which is similar to the 52100 but it has more carbon. It's one of my Fav. Steals, that's why I again bought almost the whole line of Swamp Rat and that's the steel they use and Busse Combat a sister company uses the INFI Steel. But yeah, Word of Warning. Keep the knives in original shape. As collectors they will realize more profit then a beautiful customized knife you make. Unless the original company customized it. But yeah, I really like the BK-7 Set I have. Oh, and my 2nd L.E. I bought the BK-29 Moses Bowie. Both are around 10" blades and great shoppers. They named the Bowie Moses after the in house knife designer at Ka-Bar. It's more Bowie L@@K with maybe a little stronger tip and its a 1/4" shorter but both are a 1/4" thick in the 1985 CriVan, I always dream that I wanted to own a Cold Steel Trail Master, but now I don't. But I do have a 1990 Trail Master but in the San Mai 3. The ricaso is different than on the new ones. I just thought if it. I think the C.S. Kukuri Plus will ine day be a collector in the O1 steel but not the nachwte but the 5/16" thick Kukuri. The difference between a Khukuri and a Kukuei is the Khukuri is a traditionally made and a Kukuri L@@Ks like one only. I have (2) H.I. M-43's. The Beast and a smaller one I team with my modified Attitude Knife. But it was modified at Battle Horse. I also had Swamp Rat Custom Shop modify my Rodent 6 which now L@@Ks like a Ratmandu on steroids. Anyhow, enough, I'm so sorry for taking so much of your time. Maybe you and I should email eachother, Ok, Coal for now.,,.

      paulie 4x I just got this comment, it was stuck in my spam folder for some reason. So you have both users and collector knives? All those Beckers and Swamp Rats! So cool! And some of those old Cold Steels were so nice! And no problem I love to hear about your knives! More please! haha!
