      I’m remembering this of the top of my head so I’m possibly mistaken but was it Algernon Blackwood (coolest name ever) that used the yithians in a story where a man camping finds a strange stone that pulses light when he stares at it and when he didn’t stop looking into it he was pulled in and switched bodies with a Yithian? He wakes up on a strange, distance planet in an alien body.

      its not exactly an ability, its more likely just something they have the technology to pull off. they probably do it because they learned some things they werent supposed to know, and ended up being hunted by the Crawling Chaos. so they developed a way to transport their minds through time and space, thereby preserving their race and their knowledge. and then they found Earth. and you know what the punchline is? they led the Crawling Chaos right to us.

      @@vampyruslupus9950 I beg to disagree. Yes they are advanced and hold the knowledge with each transfer but there are a couple of things.
      1) Lovecraft likes to make it so we literally can't understand writing them so maybe we can.
      2) not all planets have the same material. If it was they would need items with the same properties on every planet which is unlikely.
      Mind you I haven't actually read the stories containing the yith yet so I am going based on what I have read outside of that and I may be severely wrong. The upside to Lovecraft is we might both be right and it might be a combination of there species and technology that allow them to do it and without one the other can't do it.

    • @vampyruslupus9950
      @vampyruslupus9950 Před 5 lety +5

      @Paul Crothers. i find myself compelled to agree with you on a couple points. we both might be totally wrong or we both might be half right. and we really cant understand the entirety of Lovecrafts mythos, or maybe we arent meant to understand and we're all just wasting our time.
      either way i still think my theory holds up for a few reasons. its obvious that the Yith have a highly evolved mental capacity, allowing them to memorize practically anything. its also possible that a strong mental will power would allow their minds to survive separate from their bodies and souls, allowing them to do pretty much anything, including inhabit hosts. and if they had gathered enough knowledge from their current hosts before travelling to Earth, they would have known everything there was to know about Earthen tech and resources without really having to do anything themselves. As for creating the original technology that would allow such migrations, its not impossible that there could be another planet with similar elements and resources floating around out there somewhere. and destroying races and planets seems to be something the Crawling Chaos is quite good at, as told by HPL.
      then again like you said we're probably both wrong

  • @sarahleonard7309
    @sarahleonard7309 Před 5 lety +38

    OK, just read this one. If I understood it correctly, they were not generally telepathic. They had machines that allowed them to swap their minds with other creatures (or even their own race from different eras), but they couldn't do it on their own. They also actually spoke the languages of other races to communicate with them whenever they could, or used machines that translated aloud for them.

    The Shadow Out of Time and At the Mountains of Madness are among my favorite works of Lovecraft! Kind of intertwined as well. They're very intertwined. Professor Dyer appears in both of them. I like to think that the unnamed evil in MoM might have also been the Polyps. Both Yithians and Elder Things hesitate to even hint at them and the main character has to infer this info from vague clues that he gathers over a long period of time.

    To me, the strangest thing about the Great Race of Yith is that their earthly prehistoric bodies are apparently just some race that was already on Earth at that time. Other bizarre monsters in Lovecraft's stories are explicitly alien beings or gods, but these weird cone-shaped creatures are not given any special origin other than the idea that they were a primitive race already on Earth. So... they evolved on Earth? What did they evolve from? I find it hard to imagine that they evolved naturally on Earth as they are so unlike any other creature on the planet.

    I found The Shadow Out of Time a real chore to get through, much like At the Mountains of Madness. Both stories are held in such high regard and I looked forward to reading them as I read Lovecraft's complete fiction. Both were just difficult and unsatisfying reads for me, definitely not my favorites.

    The notion of a library detailing information from across the universe over the course of million of years has been done before. The most famous examples of this in Fiction is through Brainiac in the DC universe where he collects the most advanced city of every sentient race before blowing up their world. Another example of this, and a direct nod to Cthulhu himself are the Reapers from the Mass Effect Trilogy which are living Libraries of the species they are composed of. I will give the Yithians the credit for being a source for this troupe and I believe we can date every example in fiction to Lovcraft's creation of the Yith themselves.
    Can't wait for more of the Month of October!

    Always loved the Yithiens. IIRC the bodies we know them in were a food source for the polyps when they moved into them. So it's like if our cattle suddenly became hyper intelligent in an instant and started building lightning guns and such to go to war with us.

    I didn't know much about them before. Once I dreamt I was talking to a Yith about the planet, its evolution and dimensions. When I woke up, I was wondering if I didn't see a creature like this in a game (Call of Cthulhu xbox360). I looked about it and decided to buy the novel. The mind switch and all knowledge was very interesting. Thanks to this dream that made me discover them. It added an interesting perspective about altered state of consciousness.

    To anyone interested, this story and a few others were adapted into manga format by Tanabe Gou by the same names as the originals. If you're worried about seeing anime art styles then you won't have to worry about that. It's just black and white and read from right to left.

    Very cool. I love the idea of ancient civilisations before us, I mean... convergent evolution, nature often repeats itself. So, dinosaur people, or I guess cephalopod people could've existed, what they left has been destroyed by time however. Its mear speculation of course, but I'd say it's more likely to have happened than not to have happened. Just makes sense.

    Great video. To muse on the question, "What do the Yith look like," that's a very human question. The Yith look like, well, whatever, and whenever, they want. I think as a race, they would have learned different ways to identify themselves to one another, regardless of species, be it clicking or some other form of movement or design. Clearly, in order to survive the species had to shed notions of physical identity and instead understand their consciousness is who they are, otherwise they would eventually find some sort of race or species they would be repulsed by and refuse to transfer. They're beyond such simple attachments as looks and bodies.

    To put the Great Race of Yith into perspective, as far as alien advanced species/civilizations go, they were about the most benevolent you could get... and they still condemned at least two other races to cognitive extinction by swapping into their bodies to escape the cataclysms that befell them: once when they escaped to the cone-shaped bodies, and again when they condemned the beetle race to be slaughtered by the half-polyps.

    I really like this story and this species. The paranoia of the main protagonist and the fundamental destruction of his idea of reality is where the horror comes from for this one; not merely a scary monster.
    However unfortunately furries ruin everything. If you know any furries then you might catch my meaning.

    The Yith are more of a “formless” race mainly because of their mind switching ability. We don’t know what their original form was.
