This is nothing more then Sheldon’s compulsive need to look superior to Leonard.
Yeah. This episode was really silly.
Every other episode, Amy usually has a problem with Sheldon, or half the time Sheldon wants to break up with Amy.
The whole couples agreement was never even bought up again in some vague one-off comment.
The best relationship on the show was Sheldon and Penny, period. Properly developed, sweet, and great till the end. There is no contest. And Jim and Kaley def had way better chemistry together than her and Johnny, or Jim and Mayim.
Even though Kaley and Johnny actually dated? Penny was just an extension of Missy, and the show was written to show the dynamic of Penny and Sheldon in a brotherly-sisterly friendship. I don't think they were the best relationship. I just think it was written in that manner to coincide with Sheldon's personality and need to learn on a sisterly or motherly figure. I think the relationship of the entire case is what made TBBT so impactful. Therefore, the best relationship on the show is that involving every main character and their entire ensemble. Thus, there's no one relationship that is better than the other.
What does it mean when a hetero friendship is better than all the hetero or homo romances in a series?
No, it's Stuart & Denise.
It takes Penny years to start to understand Sheldon. If not for her relationship with Leonard, she'd avoid him as much as possible.

Tell me about it; it’s a bullshit thing to do. Chuck Lorre is an idiot who can’t write decent relationships; PERIOD.
He added TAAHM humor to the last four seasons, which is why all the relationships were RUINED.
The reason is that people love them. Although they weren't a couple and later the screenwriters wrote this declaration of Sheldon that he thinks of Penny as a sister, it was towards the end of the show. Still, in very early seasons they actually subtly flirted with each other (even in the pilot Penny appears to be more interested in Sheldon than Leonard). They are an example of purely platonic love, so the physical part could have been easily added if only the writers changed the route a little, in the last episode of season 3 or in season 4 when Amy just appeared. Because at that time, Sheldon treated Amy only as a friend, and Leonard and Penny were broken up.
Penny definitely could have awakened physical desire in Sheldon as she was very experienced when it came to sex. And Sheldon with his innocence but also dominant but solid personality could have taught/given Penny actual self-respect in a romantic relationship. They could have been an absolutely great and very entertaining odd couple. Also, it is in fact, common in real life that popular/experienced people form stable, life-long relationships with more innocent, quiet people, because when these popular types finally feel ready to settle after wild partying and hooking up, what they need is a solid, faithful and often calming partner, while a more innocent person with a more wild, popular partner gets relaxing fun and new rich experiences. So these types actually complete each other, and Sheldon & Penny could have been this type of romance.

(if I though you were talking about any friendship, I would have mentioned Sheldon and Penny on the top... But check out the scenes when Raj and Howard go skating, or when Raj greets the astronaut Howard at his presentation... they have the couple's vibe sometimes...)

Most comments seem to think Leonard and Penny have the best relationship, but I disagree. I will admit that theirs is the best to watch, but in terms of being a quality relationship, they fall short. Too much drama and it took too much effort to get some semblance of stability.
did you even read the comments? most hate Leonard and Penny, and think the best couple, altho they were not really the couple but they platonically loved each other, was Sheldon and Penny. I also disagree that Leonard and Penny were the best, they were the worst!

Maybe Sheldon and Amy are the weirdest couple but they're healthiest one among the others. Penny and Bernadette from time to time seem like if they are resentful to be married, Sheldon drives Amy nuts like he does with everyone, although they have showed to be soulmates.
I definitely don’t think Sheldon and Amy are the best relationship. Sheldon drives Amy nuts with his immaturity, selfishness, rudeness, and quirks. And he used to drive her crazy with his refusal to show her any physical affection.

Penny and Leonard are are terrible couple they have nothing in common, penny has no grasp on science, she has no passion for anything except for alcohol, she's extremely rude, and plus Leonard already had a perfectly healthy relationship with Stephanie Barnett. Plus Penny was already married to Zach which by the way would be the perfect boyfriend for her
In the early seasons, Penny and Leonard had some good moments but as it went on, especially after their marriage, they quickly fell apart with her being overly demanding & belittling with Leonard being spineless

nah, the best relationship was Sheldon and Penny.
Sheldon and Penny was the only relationship that was properly developed and grew, and the best one. I also think Howard and Bernadette weren't bad at all. People really don't get that exaggerations are part of the comedy in sitcoms, this is why you don't take it that seriously. Bernie and Howard loved each other, had 2 beautiful kids, and absolutely fit together. Stop being so hateful, my god.
he is also right here. Penny was awful to Leonard for the majority of the show, except the first 3 seasons maybe, and Leonard later on saw Penny only as a sex option and beauty, too superficial so many times. They were an awful couple, period. And Sheldon & Amy def grew way more and had a way better relationship than Penny&Lenny, especially if you consider how they started. But the best couple that wasn't really a couple was always Sheldon and Penny, I agree with other commenters.
